Firstly, kudos to the young fella -- having a stirling debut year and the best Greg to play for Freo since Harding.;)

I was having a yarn over a pint or two whilst watching the game on Sunday with a mate debating the correct pronunciation of "Broughton".

In the fine history of commentators getting Freo players' names wrong (every
Indigenous player was Chisholm etc) I thought this post may serve to assist AFL talking heads to get this kids name right before his career takes off.

So back to the Broughton paradox.

Is it

broar-ton

Or

Brow-ton

Or as Wikipedia believes:

Brottun

Maybe if anyone cares they can make one of those poll things.

Brottun seems right.

But I say De-Bow-er and most people say De-Boo-er.

And I hate when commentators call Masten Mars-ten when his name is Mass-ten IMO.

Also, what's with Josh Mahoney being called Marnie? His name is Ma-ho-nee like in police academy! Do those people call mahogany ma-go-nee? And don't get me started on the way people pronounce Strachan!!!

Mahony is definitely Marnie...and Marsten is how he pronounce it I believe

Think the correct way is De-Bore. Had a mate in school with that name and that's how he said it.

This post is useless without pics :)

lol, I had a look for pics but didn't think she looked that flash.

What I always said, any Asian country has a higher speed internet than Australia. C'mon Kev, do something about it. ;)

I still can't get over how one of the most famous and critically acclaimed movies of all time, The Godfather, mispronounces the title character's name FFS. For mine, it is Cor-leo-ney, and not Cor-lee-own. Can someone here with Italian heritage please clarify this for me?

Although I suspect these Mahonys, Mainwarings, Grgcs et al are happily changing their pronunciations for the modern times.

As for the OP, I reckon it's Broar-ton. Or how about Bruff-ton for another derivative?:p

Smoking Gun i dont know what it is but i reckon Broar-ton sounds too obvious and therefore cant be right ;)

So im gonna go with Brow-ton until we get some official confirmation...

...anyone know someone at the club that we can ask?

Broughton [Bruhf-tuhn]

That's how I say it. Then again, I like irritating the hell out of people and deliberately mispronouncing names usually does the trick.

LOL. Terry "Plough" Wallace has long been pronounced "Pluff" in my circle of friends for this very same reason.

So Bruffton it is then, yeah? ;):p

A basic guide to the proper speakin, incorporatin the pronunciashun of the names of some of them there young kids at our Freo-mantle Dock-uhs:

Broughton - "Broar-ton"
DeBoer - "Dee-Bore"
Suban - "Suuuuu-ban" (if you can't drag it out over three seconds you aren't a real man)
Palmer - "Palmer"
Walters - "Son-Son"
Sibasibado - "K. C."
Clarke - "KlarK" (emphasis on that hard K at the end...)
Head - just don't say it

And the Weagles:
Naitanui - "naiter-new-ie"
Hurn - "Hu-oooooorn"
Masten - I dunno, doesn't seem to get called much during AFL games?? Maybe "who's that bloke"??

And as for this Mad Mac:
Flesh enough for ya, dom?
kim_cattrall.jpg

Frankly, I find it disgraceful that they didn't clean and polish either the railing or the plastic Hyundai Mark IIIAd castor wheels - really shows a complete lack of professionalism. I mean, the castor wheels aren't even aligned properly in the regulation formation!! And the idiots didn't even make sure the carpet was the same colour under both sets of wheels!! Sheesh - talk about drongoes 101...

I still can't get over how one of the most famous and critically acclaimed movies of all time, The Godfather, mispronounces the title character's name FFS. Coreleone: - I'm told it's actually "kor-lee-own" - silent last e apparently; though for me it is pronounced "one scary mo-fo" - or if he's in earshot - "Oh great and wonderful Don" - bit like addressing the Ruddbott when he is in earshot...
Broughton - pronounced "Broar-ton": see above. Or, if under pressure to focus on not spilling your beer on the guy in the next row while yelling his name out at the game - pronounced "go you good thing!!"

LOL. Terry "Plough" Wallace has long been pronounced "Pluff" in my circle of friends for this very same reason.
So Bruffton it is then, yeah? ;):p

Terry Wallace: pronounced "prune", "failed hack" or "the guy who chose Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls, Richard Tambling and Jordan McMahon".

I could go on like this for hours...

Broughton was in the year below me at the school i attended. he is good friends with alot of people i know. The way the commentators are pronouncing his name is correct. most people call him brought-o ( the 't' is pronounced as a 'd', broad-o)

It's now the former, but the latter would have been the proper way in the past. Like Mainwairing I've heard it pronounced "Mannering".

Some idiot from Transperth was on radio a while back talking about Glendalough and calling it "Glend-a-LOCK", kept going on about how that is actually the correct pronunciation. Who cares how it was pronounced in the old country? In the local language it's been Glenda-LOW for ages.

What's that stuff coming out of Tom Cruise's Ear?? Is that something to do with scientology - they vaporise your brain and then fill up the vacant space with their mumbo-jumbo? or in Tom's case, maybe they used Spakfilla?
