Ok just a bit of trivial hypothetical to pass the time.
Richmond bestow their captain with no. 17 in honor of Captain Blood. Cotchin looks likely to go from 9 to 17 next year, so if it happened at Carlton which number would it be?
I'll put up several to start with and open up to discussion.
2 (Nicholls)
3 ( Fitzpatrick )
4 ( Sticks)
7 (Dom and Ratts)
25 (Jezza)

No poll, just suggestions. Might kill some time until the press conference is announced.

I think it is a bit of a wank. Heard Caro saying how Cotchin will go to No. 17 and then hey keep No.9 aside if he relinquishes the Captaincy.

To me it feels like a bit if manufactured tradition but I guess it has to start somewhere.

Having said that, you either just go No.1 (as Collingwood used to) or else, for historical reference , has to be No. 2 (Big Nick) or No. 4 (Sticks).

Being a bit older, and watched him kick 6 in the '72 GF, I would go with Big Nick at No. 2.

Yes, agree, garbage idea.

What Richmond are essentially saying that they have reached the pinnacle. That's a terrible message. Footy clubs should be about trying to create history, not dwelling on some bygone era.

Sort of thing I'd expect from the Tigers. Not for the Blues.

Also agree with Harks, once you get a #, you should keep it.

whichever number has the most games played as captain or whichever number has the most premierships as captain

they seem like the two logical ways to do it

Hate the idea of a captain's number; very glad we don't do it. Keep the number you're given, and make your own history.

I love that the eight players wearing 38 and 40-46 inclusive all played regular senior footy for the Blues this year, especially late-season. Reminds them (and everybody else) where they came from, and how hard they had to work :thumbsu:.

Yeah dislike this tradition. Would rather players make their own history. For the Captains you Think of 4, you think of Sticks. In the future it will be 5 - Judd and 3 - Murphy
