Thanks pretty good analysis of the game.

Williamson was poor and I remain to be convinced. I had hoped he'd be our Simpson replacement but Saad is playing that role.

Saad was trying to do too much looked better in 2nd half.

I also agree the evidence is lacking that Williams is a full time mid

Thought Weiters was restricted after injury during the Pies game he certainly came of his man to help out against Richmond .

Who does McGuane think should be cut?

Willo - 5 touches, poor defensive awareness and running, caught ball-watching and reckons his inaction played a part in a couple of Collingwoods' goals.

I'm inclined to agree, I think Willo has looked a bit lost so far. Not sure what his role is. With his disposal we should be looking to give off to him forward of centre, but he's either not being used or he's not in the right spots.

I’m a bit sick of Willo running himself into trouble, seemingly every single game. I know it’s a fine line as a line-breaking HBF, but he’s making too much of a habit of that.

and he gets caught on his right side every game.

running straight into the clutches of one or more opposition players does not constitute 'breaking the line'.

That’s what I’m saying.
He’s trying to break the line and failing.
He has a nice kick on him, should trust that a lot more than using the dash as much.
he gets corralled onto his right and then it all explodes; he can't work back to have access to his left and he seems so invested in the running part that he can't work out how to handball himself out of trouble

He should be getting easy ball on the outside. He's a strong runner, a good size, and a lovely kick in space. So get him out on the wing ahead of the ball and get it in his hands. Instead, we've got him lurking behind the play looking for a short handball in congestion. It's nice being able to burst through the odd pack, but it shouldn't be the go to play because when it fails it's a turnover in the worst possible position.

Simmo made a career out of only having a left foot. Willow needs to work out a better way of getting onto his left if he's caught high and dry on his right, or use a bloody handball. He only seems to be getting caught when he's stuck on his right.

Too often our whole team didn't use the first option. We've really lacked some footy basics, which is another reason we're losing, not just our lack of pressure.

Not so true. He played on Sidebottom and Pendlebury when they were used as forwards and they barely had any influence inside ~60 due to Doc. I especially took note of it while watching the game as I noticed several times he nullified them in contests.
Sidebum and Pendles aren't really natural forwards though and I wouldn't consider them to be considerably dangerous resting mids either. Not like a Dusty, Danger, Fyfe.
You would expect Doc to have their number.

Sidebottom is always dangerous inside 50, both creatively and kicking goals himself.

Suspect that Willo will be having a spell with Parks coming in this week. Can't really argue with that unfortunately.

players really need to practice kicking on their non-preferred side. amazing how many players comprise/stifle ball movement or opportunity to kick a goal due to being caught out with ball being on their wrong side.
Walsh has been guilty of this a few times in the first 2 games. It was more prominent v Collingwood.

It's not even as though they need to be able to pinpoint a target on the left; a clearing kick or kicking to a general area inside 50 will be enough most of the time.

Have some notes from the game including doch losing a few aerial contests and losing his man. He was down as a defender a touch after a great defensive w1

against tigers Cripps ran through into f50 and handballed to fish who could have had a shot on goal but because it was on his non preferred with oppo coralling his left side he tried turning it around and i think end up getting tackled. he was clear to have a shot and if he did he may have scored. just shows he has very little confidence on his right side. a bit of practice would change that. you would think at a professional level, club and players would try and do something in this regard.

yep, some flair and following their natural instinct wouldn't go astray - it will bite them on the arse every now and then but I can live with that.........

I agree that players should be able to use their non-preferred side - but we repeatedly demonstrate a lack of basic intelligence on the football field by feeding players the ball to their non-preferred side or more annoyingly players calling for the ball when it’s on their non preferred side.

Or under pressure...

We need to narrow the field, hence more numbers around the contest/turnovers. It will also allow us to force more opposition turnovers

Teague's setup looks like a touch footy environment
Perhaps we should play all our games at Kardinia Park?
