no way TDK is over 800k.

Charlie and Harry are the only players that can command 1mill.

This will test the culture, if they are willing to take cuts and the club will look after them post career. ;)
Whilst Charlie is definitely a 1 mill player I reckon he owes us a pay cut after being injured for a few years and still receiving big coin
Not his fault of course but that would be great if it happened…

800k a year iirc so you'd hope that at worst he'd stay on the same money. I'd be a little disappointed if he demanded over $1m.

none of those we want to stay will leave, not now when our window is open, we have Voss, the place is buzzing and the boys are tight …. no way.

Remember we are Carlton we look after players who win premierships. Especially the stars.

Lots of multimillionaires post football to our premiership players who toe the line Put CFC first. It’s a smart play on the players side.

Kane makes the same mistakes all journos do :

  • quote max ‘on the market’ salary
  • assume player would leave just for money
  • assume other clubs can pay that maxed out salary
  • make no provision for front or back end loading.

The reality is - how often does a player leave a big Melbourne club , particularly one challenging top 4 and playing finals for reasons other than wanting to go home Interstate.

Rare for players to leave when their side is contending, generally as a collective they will take less than market value to chase flags

Buddy is probably the top end player outliner, but didn't hamper the Hawks with winning flags. Most other players that leave contenders are bottom end of the 22 and or when they may have won a flag or 2, such as Brandon Ellis or GAJ chasing a retirement package

If anything, contending sides attract players willing to take unders in a hope to win a flag

At the moment, not concerned with losing any player that would be considered a lock

You'd wanna be on the Baggers now!

Exactly. Players don't move much between Victorian club (especially superstars amongst the big 4/6) for many reasons. It is usually a go home factor to interstate or more game time if they were to leave.

We killed it in 2015 and it changed the course of our club. The only other player we wouldn’t have been disappointed if he went #1 was Clayton Oliver and although Oliver is a good bloody player, Jacob Weitering is the higher need in 2022 and beyond. And looking further afield to Harry and Charlie’s selections, that was just good luck on both counts. 5 clubs (2 Victorian) could have selected both Harry and Charlie before us (Brisbane selected the Victorian Schache)

I'd like to think that had we missed one of McKay or Curnow we would have taken Hipwood or Himmelberg or perhaps Ben McKay.

Kennedy taken the pick after Curnow now playing to potential too.

Well known story that we took McKay at 10 because Adelaide were interested at #11. Curnow at 12 because he wouldn't have been there at #23 despite the teenage shenanigans. The luck was that Geelong didn't have any decent picks (partly because of the Henderson deal) it would possibly have forced us to chose between Curnow or Harry.

Don't forgot we also picked up the little battler who only gets game because of his surname for a pick in the 50's

We can forgive Dodo just this once, tTo be fair we should have sent Dodo a few bottles of wine to thank him for taking Francis and Parish instead of Charlie and Harry

He's done more for Carlton than many think.

Overpaid for Dylan Shiel.
Traded Saad for #8 - looks like a steal right now.
Fiddled on the Daniher trade to Sydney, only to lose him for compo pick to Brisbane. Meant we didn't get Papley and had to develop Durdin/Owies/Honey/Fisher for a sizeable net gain.

Adrian is ON the Christmas card list as far as I'm concerned.

The human form of “clickbait”…

Jake Lever could be one of the outliers. But that was before the infamous camp.

Even over the last 5 or so years when we've been shit we haven't lost anyone we wanted to keep.

Our culture and the comoradere seems to have always been strong, even in the tough times.

So much outside noise about Cripps at one stage but he was never leaving.

So many of our players like Walsh, Curnow, Weitering and Mckay would be getting massive offers from other clubs, but all seem to love the club and willing to take unders to stay. None of them are holding us to ransom like Cognilio did to GWS.

I think Bolton started that great culture. Even though it fell apart a bit in the end you could tell the players loved him (until maybe the end where he seemed to get a bit cranky) and there was a closeness in the group that still remains.

Don’t be ridiculous. Players only take under at Geelong, Richmond and Sydney.

Honestly, if we get Pittonet back and McGovern (longshot) back and we can finish a maximum of 6th spot, to ensure a home final, you just never know. As disturbing and frustrating as it was to lose to St Kilda last week, it wasn't for being outplayed, it was of our own doing. Would rather lose games through our own fault than be beaten by being outplayed. Players wouldn't walk away second guessing themselves, they'd be angry with themselves.

Pittonet out is huge.

TDK got some buzz last week but by in large he's been beaten most weeks. Pittonet will be a huge in when back.

I will agree with this only once we have beaten Melbourne or Brisbane, no sooner. If we can beat Brisbane in Brisbane during H&A, we can beat them in Melbourne in finals, and Melbourne with May is the benchmark.

If we can pinch a final or two this year it'd be terrific, but a GF or premiership this year would be truly unbelievable.

I'd be able to return to the 'Rebuild of Carlton and Brisbane' thread and state equivocally that ours was more successful, quoting all the Richmond and Collingwood posters who were perfectly happy to dig the boots in in 2017-18.
