Well... that was a surprising development in the coaching panel.

Good to see us pick up Laidley. Has been working with one of the better midfields in the league and should be able to introduce a level of hardness into our guys that has been lacking for a while.

The move of Green from a midfield/development coaching role into the forwards coaching role should be interesting. I wonder if he is going to be working with the talls more and helping them to overcome some of their deficiencies. If this works out, it's a master move by Mick.

Now everyone knows my views on Barker, but I think that he could actually be a fairly decent backs coach. He knows what forwards should be doing during a match and he might be able to help the guys down back to get a bit more one on one defensively.

If we look at what SOS did with the St Kilda defenders while he was there, we know that someone who has an idea of leading and positioning in a forward line can help defenders get a better handle on what to expect during a game on how the forward is going to lead.

But all said and done... if Barker ****s this up, I full expect to see him gone at the end of next season.

With regard to Barker, Mick must see something he likes or Barker has got photos of Mick and a slow moving Ox. Most of our bad quarters revolved around getting smashed at the clearances and Mick has reacted in a very smart way. Murphy will be very excited to get the odd chop out for a change. Very highly regarded for his tactical nous. Laidley is an A-grade appointment.

Laidley was in Bali and had his phone switched off. Mick was calling him, trying to get in contact with Laidley. Obviously Laidley wasn't returning his phone calls. So, coincidentally, Mick's son-in-law works for St Kilda. Mick mentioned to his son-in-law that he couldn't get in touch with Laidley. Mick's son-in-law emailed Laidley and told him he might want to give Mick a call.
St Kilda only offered Laidley 1 year and Caro is adamant there are definite issues at St Kilda in general because of Scott Watters. The opportunity to work with Mick, who Laidley respects a lot and coach the Carlton midfield looks a lot more attractive than staying at the Saints under a coach who no one thinks will be there for long.

Im sure this is how it typically goes, but i like how MM sees someone he likes and goes after them and really shows the person his desire to have them on board...really makes a difference, like Everitt saying MM actually flying up to Port Douglas to speak to him face to face and 'plead his case' was the main factor of him choosing Carlton over some other teams who probably only gave him or his manager a phone call.

That's the part that confounds me. I get the move of Green to the forwardline coach, it is a much better fit IMO, but I don't understand Barker as forward, defence or orange-peeler coach.

Why? Do people ITT saying they dont understand/want Barker as defensive coach actually know anything about his coaching abilities? I certainly dont...but i do trust MM in making his appointments...he's shown in the past if someone isnt up to scratch he wont hesitate to give them the flick and i dont think he's about to change...

but if someone here could actually explain in detail why Barker shouldnt be defensive coach please explain it to me

Well... getting the assistant coach (backs) role sort of backs up my stance that his work as the assistant coach (forwards) was below par and with Mick giving him the hobo shuffle to the backline says that Mick didnt rate his work as a forwards coach. I am thinking that the board might have gotten involved and said that we dont have the money to pay in petty cash at the moment to pay out his remaining contract so you are going to have to use him somewhere else.

Who knows... maybe he will be a revelation as a backs coach and our defensive line will become completely rock solid and we will have the lowest mean score against in the competition.

If that happens, then he has found his niche in life at the club and will be there for a while longer... but something tells me that he wont cut it as a defensive coach and will be out the back gate with a DCM as soon as our season finishes next year!

Considering that Mick is a defence first coach, maybe it's a promotion?

Good assitants rotate their roles for more experience anyway. It's ridiculous to assume that Mick would demote an assitant who wasn't any good rather than get rid of them.

Not sure why the obvious is so hard to understand.

I would though still like to hear from Mick on his coaching panel.
We know he likes to have a full handle on things so maybe less is more using his methods.
