He has only scored about 50-60 runs off Swann, Broad and Anderson though. But yes he has finally made a ton.

If only it wasnt a dead rubber match

Watson's ton can be seen as a positive or negative and only time will tell. It's disappointing it's taken him so long to crack another and we especially could have done with one earlier this series. That being said, if he now uses this to kick on and put in 2-3 solid seasons with the bat at No.3, then that would be a huge positive for the team. On the flip side, if he uses it to bankroll another 2-3 seasons of high promise and low output, then it could be the worst thing that could have happened.

Yep. The guy clearly has talent but has never proven he has the temperent/head and possibly technique for test cricket. But if you give a talented guy enough chances he'll eventually get runs. Which he has. But this is as dead as a rubber as you can get - series lost, england playing two debutants (who he tonked around the park) and a flattish deck. He had 4 tests that mattered + how many before that and didn't fire a shot.

But the way the aussie selection is now done this will ensure he's in the side for the next 2-3 years regardless of form/output. Players like Kawaja must be thinking what a joke - only put in the team for the tough games (and yes he has underperformed - along with every other batsmen) and then get booted for the soft games where players like watson get supposed credits in the bank.

The thing that concerns me at present is we don't seem to have a clear view on what our batting line-up should be or where players best spots are. So we just seem to make seemingly random decisions each test - this week it's all about performance - but anyone who's watched cricket knows that runs scored in a couple of innings is not enough to judge a batsmen - the variability is just too high.

Steve smith just keeps getting these cameo knocks which keeps him in contention but reckon he'll get found out sooner than later - but he'll also keep getting chances. Have we ever had a batsmen at no 5 or 6 like smith who'd look so completely out of place if you moved him up the order (due to lack of technique etc)? Reckon if he makes it it has to be as as a batting all-rounder at 6.

Tactical slow over rates again ruining the game. Another example of an inept ICC.
Simply fixed by penalizing the offending team with the thing the tactic is trying to avoid..... Runs

Credit to Steve Smith for his knock yesterday. Looks to be much more solid technique wise thesedays.

Lyon bowling well at the moment. Poms are exceedingly boring

Forgot to mention the pitch. Awful, so slow and making (along with the Poms) for come very mundane sessions

Very, very dull 'aint it. I reckon Trott just might have an interesting time in Australia with the short ball.

Agree. Looks lost against the short ball at times. Very susceptible to skying to deep square leg/fine leg

haha watson, your timing is impeccable. Match/Series on the line . . . nothing. Career on the line . . . highest score in test cricket. Good on him I guess but I agree with MB, got to make centuries when the heat is on in order to win us matches and series.

Watson should be told, you wanna stay in the test side, give up T20 for a few years. For mine, the leg down the pitch is a result of T20 where you can just plant and swing. Doesn;t work in test cricket and he's been exposed as a result.

Whilst this innings was impressive, it effectively meant nothing in terms of the series.

Nah, it's not T20 that's the issue. It's 10,000 hours facing a bowling machine.

If you break down Watson's individual shot techniques it is absolutely elite, perhaps even the best in the world. Incredibly consistent, you could almost say "robotic".

His problem is in shot selection, and coping with movement. Bowlers know that they can give him slightly different deliveries and he will play the same shot - one moves, one doesn't. One goes to the boundary, the other hits the pad...

Fair point actually.

Bloody English summers...

Poms played for a draw from the 1st ball Aust bowled this test. English weather helped them. Again.

What gets me is the media (world- not Aust) that is surprised that Australia tried to make a game of it. Couldn't see Clarko doing anything less. That and Faulkners comments at least see Australia take the moral high ground if nothing else.

Showed a little more this series that I thought we would.

Yeah, it was a game series decided by toss wins and weather (with batting collapses thrown in). I'll leave the umpiring and DRS alone.

England won three tosses and won each test with no weather intervention. Yet despite batting first and forcing us to chase in the last innings each time, we got pretty damn close twice and could consider our unlucky (or perhaps not composed, inexperienced, lacking confidence) to not have won at least one of those tests. Not once in those 3 tests though did England use the advantage of batting first to really nail a big score and dominate the game from the start.

On the flip side we won 2 tosses and took the advantage of batting first and actually did use that advantage to bat ourselves into dominant positions only to be undone by their god awful weather. We won the tosses in the wrong tests - results could have been a lot different.

Having said all that, England still deserved their 2-0 lead after 2. They crushed us in the 2nd test overall and had the better of the 1st where we nearly stole it with great tail end partnerships. After that though, I actually think we played the better cricket for the remaining 3 tests (including the one we lost). We clearly were the better side for the 2 wash outs and were marginally better/ahead for the majority of the 4th test before we unfortunately chucked it in with the batting again.

3-0 doesn't look great but I don't think too many people seriously expected the series to be close anyway and it is fairly well accepted that the series was a lot closer than that. Unfortunately, I actually think that says more about England being relatively poor too rather than us taking it up to them. Still, there is some chance we could put the wind up them in the return series. You get the feeling our boys will walk away from this series the without the win, but with a bit of belief. Now must translate that into consistency of performance - especially with the bat.

Most nice.

Hey, I reckon Lehmann might be just the coach to extract the maximum out of Finch.
Hope so... Off to a pretty good start!

Clinical batting in the 1-dayer

Bailey is smashing them everywhere

Did you see Bailey's scoring 'wheel' when he was on about 60 odd? Every scoring shot was more or less straight through the onside. wasn't a run on the off side.

Yeah I did, he did hit a fair few balls straight aswell. But you are right, nothing through the covers or point regions

Genuine wickets aswell.
Trapped KP dead in front
Then trott chased a wider one, caught second slip by finch
Root with a full ball close to off stump, caught first slip by Watson
