Watched the wrap of the test last night on Fox Sports News. They moved to an analysis of the Melb squad. Couldn't believe they were amazed at Bird's selection claiming he'd come out of left field.... Completely ignoring that he's the leading wicket taker in domestic cricket two years running. Complete nuff nuffs. I think it's 87 wickets in 14 first class games.

Funny mate, was at a media breakfast a couple of years back, either just prior to Bird starting with Tassie or when he had just started, and Henry Lawson said he'd burn it up and play for Australia. Said he'd been held back in NSW and the move would make him as a bowler. Obviously really rated him. So here we are - on the brink of playing for Australia. Gotta respect how he got there. Great to see.

Just what he needs... T20 cricket

You can pretend you weren't alerted to his presence by me...

Fergusson... my only slight on him is that he's been missing for about 5 years. Sometimes once swallow doesn't make a summer (although it did make my summer all those years ago.... ;))
A serious knee injury will do that for you.

When Cosgrove got the flick Ferguson was the one targetted by the opposition. He's got used to that now & is making the runs, his technique has improved as his footwork changed after his knee injury. I don't know why that was, but that's what I was told by one of the SA coaches.

FFS... Starc to be rested after two test matches.

The kid has taken 14 wickets in two Tests and they want to rest him.

His last four innings as a bowler...

16.0 Overs
28.5 Overs
24.0 Overs
28.2 Overs

Those guys have NFI; unless they've played T20 or play for NSW, they don't see these guys play.

Too easy!

All out for 156.
Johnson with 4 including the important wicket of Sangakkara but credit to wade for that one with a great running dive catch.
Bowled a NB on his hat trick attempt which was a bummer.
Lyon picking up the scraps with his two coming from the tail enders.
Good on bird for snaring 2 on debut also.
Siddle with the remaining 2 wickets.

I thought Bird bowled really well. Ditto MJ.

Another two loose shots from our openers causing their downfall. Sorry, I don't care about the argument about playing their shots, because Warner and Cowan were both sloppy. More than happy for them not to play those balls.

I had no idea how old Sri Lanka's batting lineup is! The rest aint no spring chickens either.

Karunaratne 24
Dilshan 36
Sangakkara 35
Jayawardene 35
Samaraweera 36
Mathews 25
Jayawardene 33
Prasad 29
Herath 34
Eranga 26
Welegedara 31

A really disappointing end to Watson's innings. Just chucked it away.

I think the Poms will have him worked out very quickly.

Can you imagine Anderson bowling to Cowan?

Did you hear Mark Taylor dribbling on about how Watson was more like a batsman who averaged in the mid 40s? Say what? he averages what he does.

The whole Watson thing is holding us back too if you ask me. he should be down the order - he isn't a top 4 batsman. His record over 38 odd tests shows that.

And now he's injured again...

Watson's issue is he is a top-order batsman, but probably not good enough to play that role. He's next to useless below 4, and tbh he's not much good once the field moves back.

He should open. Problem is, so should Cowan, Warner and Hughes.

The other problem Australia have is that his bowling is so valuable. IF only he could stay fit he'd be worth his spot on his bowling alone.

Personally, I'd move him back to opening, drop Cowan, and bring in a more defensively minded player lower down the order.

Watson calf (again) seriously how can we keep playing this guy when he can't get through many consecutive games without getting injured. Then when he has a chance to kick on with his batting he holes out! Friggin useless.

, Watson has sat out of five(tests in 2012) through injury. In the six he has played, he has averaged 31.45 with the bat and 49.16 with the ball. He hasn't made a century or taken more than one wicket in an innings, though he has contributed to wins, like his final-day 52 in Barbados.

Yep. Cowan out Special K in and Watson to open where he avg's in the 40's.

I'm not convinced that Watson can bowl and open on a long-term basis. I also think there's questions over his attributes to be a top four batsman.

He's played 4 tests as a number 6, hardly enough innings to make a case that he shouldn't bat there.

His worth, in my opinion, is to bowl and bat in the top 6. Batting 6 allows him, in theory, the greatest chance of doing that successfully.

Good on Mitch too. Great test he's had.

Grizz, it's a technique thing with Watson. He doesn't have the hands or footwork for the middle order.

He's a Matt Hayden/Graeme Smith "plonker". That front foot comes down far and early and that's it.

It's why he struggles against quality fast swing bowling (when he can't bat 2 feet out of his crease), and any spin bowler worth his salt.

Once he's into an innings, he is generally good enough to overcome these 'faults' and will molest poor attacks, but will always have that weakness. It's why he 'looks' like dominating, but never quite does.

Early on, the field is up, and there's plenty of gaps for his power to generate boundaries. Once the field spreads, the gaps disappear and placement becomes more important.

we need to reshape our opinion of an opening batsman. He's good enough to make the side, and best suited to opening. If that means he can only be a 5th bowler/4th seamer and not a frontline quick, then I think that best suits his attributes.

I dunno. I think he could adapt to the middle order reasonably comfortably. If he can handle the best bowlers, bowling with the new pill while they're rested, he should be able to come in at six and monster attacks. Just on his recent innings though - did he play many cut shots? Looked to have shelved it or something.

Ironically, you've just described Cowan to me. He looks pretty limited and very vulnerable to good bowling around that off peg - he has one movement and that's it. I think blokes like Anderson and Broad will take him apart.

I'm just not convinced Watson's best spot is opening. Top four needs to hit more centuries, plus average more for mine. He just doesn't do that. But, I will concede that if he's considered top four, and he might just be, then our talent around the states 'aint that flash.

If we had lots of batting talent coming through, I wouldnt have Watson in the side....

For mine, he doesnt score enough runs, particularly centuries. He constantly lets the opposition off the hook by getting out between 30-70, if he was a top class player, he would have a far better conversion rate of 50s to 100s. If Watson didnt bowl, he wouldnt be in the side. I think that is what is saving him right now. (Or maybe it is just because I dont like him :D)

Maxwell has been called into the test squad to replace Watson

Oh, god. If anyone suggests that his bowling is remotely close to test level I'll go hee.

I'd be more than happy to see Watson go...averaging diddly in the last two years, hardly bowls, gets injured every second week.
.he's a bit of a waste of a spot at the moment..n

And the Mitch Johnson wankfest begins.

He just flogged half of a mediocre team. Watch him bowl pies in England.
