Hahhaha i didnt deny this was a great effort but they watered the track down too much. Why didnt they go through the normal routine?

Phar Lap died young, probably because of all his travelling. I think he could have won 3, especially if he was carrying 58kgs.

Never seen a dead horse win a race. Phar Lap was unbeatable and the Handicappers were the ones that beat him, forcing to go over seas. Different era, different rules.
You say Phar Lap could have won 3 if he didn't pull a heart string and die from a bit of green grass, I could say the same thing about the Diva winning 5 melbourne cups if she wasn't retired.

1) I think that statement is hard to deny. People's affection for horses would surely disappear if there was no money at the end of the day?

2) I said it was overreacted to. Nearly evryone in the room I was in were laughing at some of the things being said. It was a great achievment I am sure, but in my view does not rate with the great human sporting achievements.

3) Fair call. I am not perfect though :)

On of the Greatest sporting things I have seen was Sunlines Cox plate win in 2001. And I didn't bet that day.

Yeah, getting money from Tooheys, Emirates, gate attendences, dining etc. would be impossible. The average trainer may have to downsize from an S-Class Merc to an E-Class, but it'd hardly not be.

No doubt you agreed with Bruce batting off over your 97 & 98 wins, and there is unequivocally no doubt that todays event was infinitely better than those "human sporting achievements". Again, if he was excited today, it's because there was something better than your average event, no matter where you classify horse racing in your rankings.

Take your bat and go home Jars. You've made a big enough fool of yourself for today!

Someone tried to assassinate Phar Lap, no one has ever tried to shoot dead Maykbe Diva - there within lies their levels of greatness.

I get my gun license soon....

Great horse. The 1 Cox Plate though would probably be worth more than the 3 Melbourne Cups (especially this years, poorest field for quite some time).

NO. There in lies the level of underworld influence that has since been cleened up so you don't actually see the dodgy dealing behind the scenes.

Three Melbourne Cups - there within lies their levels of greatness

because it was hotter than normal? they try to prepare a track that's good - dead for the melbourne cup, every year. This year the track was dead in the morning and dried out to be 'good' by the time the race was run. Diva prefers dead - slow, so I can't see how it was doctored to suit her, they just prepared the track to how the VRC has wanted it every year.

FFS how can you even compare the crock of **** called motor sport to horse racing. The bond between man and animal. I didn't even back the diva but was screaming for her more than those I backed. What a performace. I had the privilege to see her live in the flesh last year and it is something I will cherish. Great decision to retire her at her peak. Now will there be a retirement tour? Bring her to Morphettville and you will fill the place. Apparently Port Lincoln went off. Makybe 1st and On A Jeune who's trainer is from from Port Lincoln 2nd. What a day!!!!

Exactly. It was the precise reason I didn't back her. It may have been dead this morning but anyone with any knowledge of Flemington knows that it has a good ability to dry out in a very short time with the spring sun. I wanted to steer clear of her in anything good or better, but I am glad I was wrong!

Exactly. The VRC's policy is to prepare a track that is dead - good. That is exactly what happened. All the once a year punters need to understand that. Great run by the Diva. Greatest horse of our era.

I liked to see Phar Lap win three. Phar Lap was a great horse. But Makybe has the Score on the Board.

So, does that mean Tawriffic (Cup winner in '89) was a better horse than Kingston Town, because KT never won the Cup.

Phar Lap won 37 of 51 races, was the only Cup winner to start odds on, carried 68 kilos in 1931, won 4 races in 8 days in 1930 and died of poisoning as a 5 year old when he still had races left.

He was the best horse.

I really have no idea why we like to compare different eras. It is just completely unfair to the great horses of the last 150 years. I think the best way to put it is that legends are made probably about every 30 years. From Maykbe Diva to Kingston Town to Tulloch to Phar Lap and to Carbine, these are in my view the 5 greatest horses to have raced. However saying that, there are many horse like Manikato and Mights and Power who are probably just a tad under these horses but also could lay claim to some extraordinary feats in racing.
The debate between Phar Lap and Maykybe Diva is completely wrong because the feats and era's are completetly different. Phar Lap may not have won 3 Melbourne Cups, but he did win the Cox Plate and then four races in a week including the Melbourne Cup which he carried 62kg and won in a canter. However as has been pointed out, she has won 3 Melbourne Cups which no horse has done.

what freedman said after the cup well i dont wanna knock phar lap, but did he win 3 melbourne cups? I thought was very poor. Did Makybe have to carry more than 60 kilos in any of her cups no she didnt. Just cause Makybe has won 3 cups and Phar Lap won 1 dosent mean anything. Im not saying Makybe isnt a champion cause she is the best horse ive seen. But saying that Phar Lap is still the best. As they said on the movie He wasnt just a horse he was the best.

Her baby's with be worth heaps!

That maybe true but being a great race mare doesn't automatically mean that she will be a great broodmare.

You only have to look at the moderate success of the offspring of one of the other great mares of the modern era, Let's Elope.

Some breeders will tell you that the best broodmares are either well bred lightly or unraced mares whose systems haven't been subject to the bucket loads of "additives" that race horses receive.

I heard Freedman wants her to race again but Santic is adamant she's retired.
I honestly believe Makybe Diva can go around for another year and win a fourth Melbourne Cup.

Lets not forget about Northerly 2001/02 won the Caulfield Cup / Cox Plate double back to back. Tell me that isn't a fair feet. Beat the best ever field assembled in Australia in the 2002 Cox Plate carrying 58kg. Northerly would have won Melbourne Cups also if it wasn't for the weights that pretty much put an early end to his career.

As for Makybe Diva they could have brought her out again next year and just run her in WFA races. Another Melbourne Cup is out of the question she'd probably have to carry around 62- 63 kg.

If the handicapper actually did his job and gave her 65-68kg in the cup then i guarantee you she would not win a 4th cup. If they give a written invitation AGAIN by giving her anything under 62kg then she would be a fair chance.

Phar Lap only won 1 cup and got 68kg, Diva wins 2 cups and she gets 58kg and a doctored track. I still get annoyed at people doing these ridiculous comparisons with her.
