Towards the end of the second round, the players that were lifting and helping us over the line, were on the whole not necessarily the ones that got us in that position in the first place.

Whatever you may think of the Crows 97/98 wins and whether it was easier to win the flag then then it has been in the last couple of years, you have to accept that the Crows got themselves into two GF's and gave themselves a chance. Port are yet to achieve this. This is the fundamental difference between the two AFL histories.

Brisbane have at leats won 16 games (99), 17 games (01), 17 games (02), won the last two premierships and are odds on to make it three in a row.

Essendon 18 games (99), 21 games (00), 17 games (01), one premiership amongst that.

I still think that recent Brisbane side and Essendon sides mentioned above were better than that of the Kangaroos.

Fair nuff. The relative quality of the teams is open to opinion.

Its no good being dominant if you do nothing with it. Thats almost an oxymoron.

Many people have said the Crows werent the better team in 97 and 98 but history shows otherwise.

History shows that you weren't the best team in 97/98 however it shows that you were the best team on the day it counts, Grand Final Day!

Thats all that matters.

What we should have done is hire Russell Ebert who was firing with the SA U 18 team at the time as a recruitment officer. He might have improved some of our selections. Instead of Warrior and Tongerie for example he may have said 'no we need to get this O'Loughlin kid".

What ever happened to Tim Johnson anyway? How did a football nobody get such a prime gig?

AS a NORTH supporter point of view
basically the two teams are clalk and cheese.

Adelaide has won 2 flags{stolen?}in some eyes
but never the less in the cabinet.

P.Power have promised but not delivered
come finals time.{pretenders?}

I know whom we would prefer to be playing SAT night
and season proper.!

Perhaps the Power will surge but a history
in SAFL means nothing HERE!

Oh so true. But try to tell that to the Pork Powder supporters, seeing their trophy cabinet is the size of the cellophane on a cigarette pack.

You could argue that in 1997 and 1998 the top sides were much more evenly matched, making Adelaide's achievement of back to back premierships all the more impressive. They did it with so many good sides around. Was Essendon's and Brisbane's dominance due to a weaker competition? (Ok, in reality it probably wasn't especially in 2002, but it's worth considering)

Again more wins could mean less worthwhile challengers. I'm not sure the argument really washes.

Why didn't they do any better with all they told me they had going for them.

Response from power friends " look at last 2 years " OK and I say "look at next 2 years !" ( meaning year 7 and 8 ) or "whats important making finals or winning some ?" In the 7th and 8th year the Crows won 2 flags with 13 wins each season during home and away so I guess as long as they win the next 2 flags they will have a similar record.

Truly funny post, this guy comes out swinging at port, punches himself in the nose, and then yammers "look at the next two years".

These stats strongly suggest Port (with a topped up SANFL side) have already outperformed Adelaide (with half the SA state side) in their first 6 years. They've done a lot more with a lot less.

Given the lower starting base, if Port wins the next two flags you'd have to say they have trounced the Crows for their first 8 years.

If Port wins one flag I would opine they had done better with what they had than the Crows, but I concede that point is more debatable.

The way the AFL works you cannot compare the two teams really. There are too many variables in the past 10 years. The draw, the player numbers on the list, the final system, the MCC contract, rule changes.

Sure we are comparing different periods of time & both clubs had certain advantages & disadvantages, but there are plenty of indicators that we can have a good healthy discussion on. eg. Port have a better win/loss record in minor round games & the Crows have a better win/loss ecord in finals. Both have done better in different areas. Most importantly both clubs are well run & I doubt will have off-field problems like some other clubs. Also, looks like both clubs are in for a good year on the field too.

Not sure about the finals bit. (Apart from the "next" two years, well most likely.)
