Planets do not twinkle or change colours, its cause of the light bouncing off earths atmosphere it looks like it does. Same with the stars. Any sattellite image of Jupiter, Mars or any image from Hubble can confirm that.

kind of like atmospheric refraction?

the way the human eye can see big hills or city skylines, that are not there (!) but hidden by the curvature of the earth ?

if a scientists in a witch doctor type coat told you there was a 14 foot purple spider monster behind you and it was peer reviewed would you believe him ?

Its called scintillation, same reason why stars appears to be twinkling.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinkling

In simple terms, twinkling of stars is caused by the passing of light through different layers of a turbulent atmosphere. Most scintillation effects are caused by anomalous refraction caused by small-scale fluctuations in air density usually related to temperature gradients.[3][4] Scintillation effects are always much more pronounced near the horizon than near the zenith (straight up),[5] since the light near the horizon passes through a thicker layer of atmosphere. Atmospheric twinkling is measured quantitatively using a scintillometer.[6] The effects of twinkling are reduced by using a larger receiver aperture. This effect is known as aperture averaging.[7][8]

While light from planets, stars and other astronomical objects are likely to twinkle,[9] twinkling does not cause images of planets to flicker appreciably.

Stars twinkle because they are so far from Earth that they appear as point sources of light easily disturbed by Earth's atmospheric turbulence which acts like lenses and prisms diverting the light's path. Large astronomical objects closer to Earth, like the Moon and other planets, encompass many points in space and can be resolved as objects with observable diameters. With multiple observed points of light traversing the atmosphere, their light's deviations average out and the viewer perceives less variation in light coming from them.[12][13]

hile light from planets, stars and other astronomical objects are likely to twinkle,[9] twinkling does not cause images of planets to flicker appreciably

wut?

Planets do not twinkle or change colours, its cause of the light bouncing off earths atmosphere it looks like it does. .

so which is it?

or are they both right?

let me guess atmospheric refraction?

Planets do not twinkle! it twinkles cause of light bouncing off our atmosphere. If you have an extremely powerful telescope you will be able to view a planet without any flickering or twinkling. If i use my cheap home telescope it will appear like it does.

what are you thoughts on being able to see a tall natural landmark or city thats not there due to fraction?

isnt that impressive?

the human eye is a untrustworthy thing is it not

if you get the most expensive, best telescope (or youtube it) planets look tripy asF - they way the change color and that

accord to the eye

which is obviously wrong (says science) due to the atmosphere ;)

You can even see Earth's curvature when you're on a plane, lol.

i think this is still my favorite due to the the ratio of being wrong and still being strongly 'liked'

( some rumors you can indeed see it from a concord however, i doubt many of you bogans ever seen one of them ;) )

I cant explain it any simpler than i already did. The planets do not change colours except a couple of documented evidences, saturns north pole changed colours recently but that due to increase photochemical hazes in the atmosphere. If you want to make up stuff now, i am not gonna argue.

one more question if you will lord science:

do planets twinkle more, with a very top of the range commercial telescope due to the reasons you have previously stated

than they do with a cheap one?

is so why? i assume the better quality instrument allows you to see more "light bouncing off our atmosphere." and hence more twinkling?

planets do change color with a telescope (cheap or expensive) according to the human eye - but thats an apparent optical illusion (or something )

, you are saying due to ", cause of the light bouncing off earths atmosphere it looks like it does."

what stuff am i making up? atmospheric refraction? the phenomenon of being able to see things that are not there ?? maybe you should look up some debunking flat earth things outside of questionable flight paths before embarking on this chapter

Rumour is the bloke at NASA responsible for the hologram machine that projects planets into the night sky fell asleep at the wheel. He was coming off the night shift, and day shift guy called in sick. His supervisor asked him to do a double shift, and this is when the trouble started.

While asleep, the hologram projector continued to spun on its axis.

The projector by-passed its safety mechanism as this must be manually activated by the operator. The passwords are changed fortnightly for security purposes.

The edge of the earth resembles a Pacman game. There is an exit, and if you go through you simply come out the other side unharmed. If this fell into the wrong hands, the projector could be used to wreak havoc through the first strike capabilities the PacMan corridor provides.

Thus it came to pass, left unattended it eventually leveled its sight, and its powerful celestial energy rays brought down the Twin Towers of Manhattan, and took out a flock of galapagos penguins.

If planets were as far away as stars then you would see them twinkle as much as stars do, but if you take a look at a planet with your naked eye, they do not twinkle AT ALL. There are exceptions to this though, In very turbulent air, even planets can appear to twinkle. The air is moving so rapidly and so randomly that even something as large as a planet can twinkle. Its called Astronomical seeing

I have answered this before. Earth isnt flat and radar beams dont travel straight.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astr...ion_shows_light_bending_near_the_horizon.html

Light has different speeds in different transparent substances, always slower than in vacuum. From this differing speed, you can show that a light beam is bent at the boundary between substances with different index of refraction, which is the ratio of how much light slows down in the substance compared to vacuum. Camera lenses, eyeglasses, etc, harness this principle deliberately.

So we can fall off the edge of the earth? :drunk:

I hope its a troll post lol

Without reading every post in this thread - can someone please confirm whether there are actual people, real life people in 2017, real life people from a country like Australia that allows you have have even a semblance of an education - that still believe the earth is flat?

Surely not.

**** me, i really wonder! planets appear to be twinkling hence earth is a disk. So where is the patch of ice near the equator LOL

what kind of education would that be?

jesuit backed?

I give up. I'm going to find the edge of the earth and jump right off.

Can any of these flat-earthers please explain how gravity works on a disc?

Good luck! I'm still waiting for an answer to how hours of sunlight change through the seasons.

I used to get angered by the unwavering beliefs of the idiot majority. Now I welcome and applaud their insanity, and mock them at weddings.

I have a relative who believes the earth is not only flat, but that it is only 5000 years old. He struggles with the whole dinosaur thing, and when I point out things like carbon dating etc he rolls his eyes.

He gets his information from some peer reviewed book called the bible. I asked him how the big fella upstairs devotes 10 odd pages to the diabolical sin of coveting thy neighbors oxen, and yet only 1 page to how he created the whole shebang in just 6 days.

One would imagine him up there chilling out with Einstein and Da Vinci, trying to explain to those upstarts that the Laws of Physics and Logic don't apply to a guy who created the entire universe from scratch.

Getting back to the idiot relative, he firmly believes Jesus will come back, and this time he won't be walking around fishing and saving prostitutes. No. He is coming back as a warlike guy, ready to annihilate isis and the evils of islam.

I pointed out the similarities between his bible theory and the movie The Terminator. Let us compare and contrast Jesus Christ and John Connor.

Uncanny how they both have the same initials isn't it? Both rulers of the humans. Early 30's.

Obvious that Arnold Schwarzenegger somehow plays a role in all this, and his son (a Kennedy) is the second coming.

Look at the triangles both upright and upside down on his shirt - clearly illuminati signs.

... It's all coming together now.
