The Flu

Didn't we have use the flu excuse v the Pies in rd 1? Eade isn't using it, neither am i. Its not freakin Ebola! Cross didn't have it, he didn't play well ( i think he was supposed to be on a certain number 29 ).

Let's get a few things straight.

1. It's not the flu (and Big Woofer, yours wasn't either, I have to say). Have any of you actually HAD flu? If it was real flu they would have been prostrate half the week scarcely able to move. let alone get out of bed. When you have real fly you couldn't care less whether you live or die. It's a "bronchial virus" which is one of the cold variants going around. It doesn't mean they are wimps. Colds can range from a mere sniffle to something that lays you low for quite a few days - or longer in this case.
EDIT: The entire team would be immunised against the flu and the swine flu, BTW.

2. This bronchial virus is exceptionally nasty. I got it two weeks ago and have had over a week off work, even though I was able to get out of bed. I'm still coughing and still have a lot of chest congestion after two weeks. I reckon it will be at least another week before I'm close to normal.

3. Our players may not be any less susceptible because they are elite athletes. Athletes and swimmers in peak training for major events like the Olympics often get knocked around quite badly if they get a virus a few weeks out from the Games. Not sure why, but it has been reported at several recent Olympics. Our blokes could be in the same boat. And even if they do recover well they will have lost their physical conditioning and sharp edge because they have had to rest or go really easy at training.

So what's Eade saying when he say it was nothing to do with the virus? I suspect there are a few mental problems he was starting to worry about and he wants to make sure everyone comes up firing. He doesn't want anyone saying "it was OK, we were sick". What about the players who were NOT sick but still didn't fire a shot? He wants the club and the players to feel the full brunt of it. He also doesn't want the club to get a reputation as always having an excuse for not winning big games. Sometimes you just have to win them against the odds. Like Wallet said in 1997 after the PF: there's nowhere to hide. You just have to face what happened.

My own opinion is that the virus had a lot to do with the shellacking we got from the Cats (who are a top side, let's not forget) but I think Eade's public line is the right one.

My concern is that there will be some who may still not be right for next week. And others in the team may still get the virus. Then, even if we limp into the finals in fourth place we have to regain top physical conditioning when others have started their taper. We're not out of it yet, but it's a big ask...

Dogwatch,

I think you have made some very good points, a lot of us refer to "having the flu" whenever we feel crook in winter, when in fact its not actually the flu.

I was speaking to my old man (he's a doctor) about the effects of a virus like this on peak performance athletes & he made a similar point to yourself, his view was that it was highly likely to be enough to have them off their game by just enough to leave them sitting ducks.....further evidence of this is probably that they started so well with their pressure but seem to run out of gas very quickly--they may have simply been spent....having said this i still believe Eade did the right thing in not making excuses, you end up just being a joke once you start doing that.

The biggest test is how we rebound mentally because we will get another chance.

All three football shows didn't mention the 'F' word when reviewing our game last night. Stats againts the Dogs that didn't exist last week, are being dragged out and clung to as gospel. FC and OWAAT just said it was a training drill for the Cats and the Dogs had no excuses. On the Couch alluded to it for 2 seconds but moved on to Johnno being too old.

I know we deserve to get a whack from media. But surely a bronci virus/flu/cold is some sort of excuse regardless of your peak fitness or intent? We are not a 100 point worse side then the second place side and they will never get an easier game in their life time. (maybe in R22)!

We need to shove it up the Swans to keep em all quiet!

The media reporting of this loss has been a joke, all jumping back on the Geelong bandwagon.

If you are 5% off your peak you are going to lose to EVERY side in the AFL. Simple. What else can explain teams such as Carlton beating Geelong and St Kilda and Port Adelaide getting up and beating Adelaide.

If we had a team of 22 relay runners all running a 2K leg (approx marathon length) and six of the team had a bronchial infection (or even a cold). What would be the result of racing against a fully fit team?

You put your best runners at the start and end of the team.

That's what happened Saturday, we were going great for 15 minutes and managed to stay within a point in the third quarter.

Fine effort in the circumstances.

A pox on the media and Geelong for getting lucky.

I wish we had a "throwaway thug" in our squad too. Someone who could have punched out Chapman's lights and carry the suspension. That Pr..k should have gone for the punches on Picken.

We need to harden up a little too...

that's a very good call.

If you lose 5% of your speed or 5% of your endurance in the AFL you do not lose only 5% of your effectiveness--you lose a whole lot more.

Same goes for the mental side, if you're slightly under you're maximum you get shown up.

I see this like forgiving a good race horse a bad run when its been injured during the race--JUST FORGET THEY EVER WENT AROUND.

The chance for redemption will come, its up to the boys to take it.

The stakes are too bloody high. We needed to be proactive......not reactive.
I think the thing we've learnt is that for next year the club/changrooms/offices etc..need to be like a big hospital. Hospital grade hand soaps on every corner, no handshakes, no high fives, flu shots for the whole club. Anyone with a slight sniffle stay home and train by yourself. Watching these dropped/rested sick players in the rooms before and after games in the last few weeks is just dumbfounding!
