Ace thread :thumbsu:

Youtube is blocked at my work unfortunately.

Good to see some threads worth responding too on this board

Excellent thread on the media board about Timothy Carey, The actor/director who gave Zappa his first break, producing some fine soundtrack work.

I prefer his work with Beefheart

Ahhh Zappa, now we're talking. Don't let this thread die a premature death cos I'm always on the hunt for some Zap.

first time i heard zappa (i pretty drunk) it was 'them or us' album, i remember thinking this is some crazy songs with game show music.

incidentally while looking for an interesting clip came across him on tv at 22, and he talks about that tim carey soundtrack.
plenty of laffs from the crowd at the skinny guy who plays the bicycle, little did they know, etc etc...

Now now Nicky, no reason to be catty. I'm sure no one will mind if you post a Roxette Youtube.

Zappa did have a ludicrous attitude sometimes. People like Tim Carey (who gave him the opportunity), dissing him and saying it was the world's worst movie and distancing himself from it later. Little did Zappa know....regarded rightfully now as some of his best work along with one of the world's best indie film's.

I'm pretty curious about any new Zappa stuff, too- he was endlessly experimental, and seems to have recorded just about every note he ever played.

Some of the earlier hippy/freako stuff is embarrassingly dated, and his lyrics could be puerile, but his guitar playing was unique and timeless.

My favourite Zappa albums are Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Zoot Allures, Apostrophe, Sheik Yerbouti.

winos dot march, sexual harassment in the workplace , stevies spanking and camarillo brillo and muffin man..

and listen to the live versions, of these songs.

FZ will blow your mind

i prefer listening to frank playing live.

rat tomago, yo mamma, rdnzl, cosmic debris and stinkfoot are all classics as well.

frank makes one my three favourite guitar players in the world!

Was big into Zappa when I was a teen. Friends always thought it was a bit strange, as it wasn't really "cool" music, and he just had a weird vibe about him. Was a bit before stuff like Wikipedia and YouTube really took off, so finding out about him and his music was a real journey of discovery.

I've always wished he'd done more collaboration and "traditional" rock music, as his guitar tone was just gorgeously complementary in a "regular" song structure setting. If you can stand Yoko Ono's bleating, this is a great example of Zappa's "liquid" tone:

I'm a bit hit and miss with Mr Zappa, some of his music is great, some I can't stand.

I do think he was a lucky man thought, he and his band did a photo shoot with Claudia Cardinale back in 1967. Apparently he was a little smitten with her, which is totally understandable as at the time she was considered the most beautiful woman in the world.

Long time FZ fan - like Muffin Man above I prefer the live stuff.

One of my favourite albums is Broadway the Hard Way - which is a nice little snapshot of American political history at the time (with a great cameo from Sting). Can only wonder what kind of fun Frank would be having with the current political scene.

The "You can't do that on stage anymore" albums are worth a listen if you want to hear a mix of live stuff from various periods.
