Im on board, even before tonight but tonight was his best match so far. His kicking improved too, lets hope it stays good. Good goal from the pocket and didnt the crowd love it! Certainly popular. Onya Gilly!

has shown a bit for AFC. could be costly in games with his poor kicking, Richo like in execution a evidenced by the kick from 50 today and the polar opposites on other occasions. his kicking actually looks worse at SANFL level for some reason. ive been very surprised by him since his call up

i'm aboard and i'm stamping tickets.

please make sure your passes are out to be stamped and all concession cards are out to be checked :thumbsu:

The one thing I want to know is, how many years do you think we'd get of quality Gillage? He'll be 25 in a few days but as he hasn't had the years of AFL footy previous to now I'm thinking he'd be able to go a bit further into his thirties than someone like a J. Brown. Not getting ahead of myself, just want to know if he does make a go of things what sort of longevity we'd get?

How long he COULD play, and how long he WILL play are two very different things.

His body may well be capable of playing well into his 30s. But would we want him to be doing so?

In 2010, our forward line will (hopefully) include 3 talls - Sellar, Tippett & Hentschell, with Walker playing the HFF role, a yet to be drafted crumber, plus a resting midfielder. I simply don't see a position for Gill.

But that's assuming everything goes according to plan....

He COULD still be playing then, but hopefully he will have been replaced by a better option.

I only see Nick Gill as a stop gap forward; he definitely is not our long term answer at centre half forward and is best suited to a half forward flank.

Unless he can dominates to the point where it is impossible to leave him out he will be gone as soon as the rebuilding process begins. Over the next 18 months this is bound to happen.

Once that rebuilding process starts and the forward line is structured around Hentschel, Sellar and Tippett – I cannot see a place in the side for Nick Gill. I am hoping that by this time next year the forward line will feature both Hentschel and Sellar and pre season 2009 Tippett can take a step up and finish that trio.

A very exciting player yes but not the answer for long term success.

i think he is better suited to a roaming half forward flank or wing/midfielder/utility and i see no reason why he cannot be part of the side for many years to come. There seems to be a perception that because he was a mature age recruit that he has a limited life but i would point out that
as a comparison, for example, Gill is only less than 1 year older than the highly rated Damon White who some would like to have here (I dont - anyway thats a different topic).

I think that there would be room for both Gill & Hentschel in the same forward line plus a KPP hopefullly Sellar - Gilly runs around and imposes defensive pressure like a small bloke anyway.

Really good to see a young forward step up at AFC. Tall, Strong and hopefully a good kick once the confidence is up. Let hope he keeps working hard see how he develops.

Fair assessment. I would much rather him as the stop gap forward at least. He is far more mobile than the likes of Perrie and McGregor. Hopefully Hentschel will return ok and Sellar and Tippett develop ok. At least Gill has a good 5+ years ahead of him if his form is good. But yeah if the others develop he will certainly lose his spot over time.

I think we're selling him short. Apart from his close to goal kicking he has few flaws in his game and plenty of grunt and X-factor. I think of him as a modern day John Klug.

The Westhoff/Gill gap is closing rapidly. There's no reason why he can't be a long term player for us even when Sellar etc come on board.

And Hentschel has a long way to go before he comes back as a force.

I am just happy that the decision to draft Gill instead of Westhoff hasnt totally bitten us on the ass. Obviously Westy is the better of the two, but at least Gill wasnt a total bust.
I can see Gill taking over Perrie's role until someone else steps up (Sellar, Tippett etc).
