March 11, 1981 - Rupert Murdoch to become Demons #1 ticket holder

An article about Greg Healy becoming captain, apparently at age 22 in 1988. He's also says only one player - Alan Johnson (I wonder how his young son is) - was the only player over 26. It makes me think of next year when it might be only Bruce and Green (and Davey?).

I find it interesting that they had such a young list back in those days.

Round 16, 1983. Melbourne wins by a goal but cop one of the most scathing match reports ever. My favourite bit,

""Having forked out $112,261 at the gate, they vented their feelings with an unparalled, stunning chorus of booing five minutes into the third term when the hapless Alan Johnson, best afield, accepted a kick-out from Steven Smith and set off into the wide open spaces along the members' half-back flank. He passed to Michael Reynolds who, amazingly, passed about 20 metres in reverse to Zantuck who even more inexplicably managed to kick out on the full"."

Hopefully we've disowned Hinch since then ;)

I think he claimed to follow Adelaide when he was on radio there and Sydney when he was there before finally realising nobody cared and giving it up.

Hopefully we haven't disowned Don Lane. Wheel the bastard out in R1 next year I say.

Some posters love him over at Demonland..

That's farcical. They must be the three people clapping in the dead silence when he plays. Then they're always "wow that was great, let's hear it again" and I die a bit inside. Symptomatic of everything that's wrong with our club.

What about the one at the South matches Merc? I remember he was pretty decent...

Aww those were the days. He hasn't been seen for years, refuses to have anything to do with the club now. Not surprising considering it's a ****ing shambles in a shit competition.

Be great to have something like that happening at a match I reckon.

And yeah, I haven't had anything to do with Brisbane Strikers since the end of the NSL either - if South are a bit shambolic now, the Strikers are infinitely worse, believe me...

This news report from The Age about the '87 prelim fiasco - 22/09/87 has got it all.

Steve Vizard when he was just a lawyer, a plane load of Melbourne fans visiting Bangkok (!?) and some casual racism at the expense of the Japanese (Lobbie Flower indeed..)

2003 - forget Brock McLean..

"Jade Rawlings is expected to take his career to Melbourne or Geelong within the next 24 hours after officially severing ties with Hawthorn yesterday.

Rawlings delivered the news the Hawks had been resigned to receiving, but was unable to nominate his preferred destination and allow the trading process to begin after receiving an 11th-hour pitch from the Demons, which gained momentum on Tuesday.

Rawlings met with Melbourne coach Neale Daniher and it is believed the Demons are prepared to offer pick five, their second selection in the national draft, in a deal that must win Hawthorn's blessing."

Getting a new nickname almost the moment you arrive at a new footy club sort of goes with the territory, but here's a bloke who may be about to score one as a result of much more research than is the norm. On Melbourne draftee Michael Newton's behalf, afl.com has taken the unusual step of asking its readers what the Demons should call him and the response has been great. Given that the name "Juice", after the pop diva, is taken up by the club's media manager Leigh Newton, fans were asked to pick from one of the following - Bert, Patti, Jack, Wayne and, of course, Sir Isaac. By late yesterday, more than 1300 votes had been received with "Bert", the TV veteran's moniker, having scored 46 per cent of the vote, the clear leader. Wonder if the Dees will take it all one step further and call their new bloke "Moonface"?

Notorious Capper on Mainy tribute guest list
Organisers of the Chris Mainwaring tribute game are considering inviting controversial former Sydney high-flier Warwick Capper to make a guest appearance.

Eagles assistant coach and record goalkicker Peter Sumich let the plan slip speaking on radio before West Coast's loss to Adelaide on Saturday, also raising the prospect of Allen Jakovich making an appearance.

The younger brother of Eagles record-games holder Glen, who has already committed to playing, Jakovich's record of 208 goals in his 54 AFL matches for Melbourne and Footscray earmarked him as one of the most talented
forwards of the 90s.

But persistent injuries curtailed his career - which is remembered as much for his on-field persona as his goal-scoring feats, epitomised by the kiss planted on his brother's cheek during a clash with the Eagles.

not sure if he played in the game or not, interesting find anyway
