ADELAIDE captain Mark Ricciuto might be grateful he is only answering questions on his right foot supposedly having a broken bone.

It has, strangely, deflected questions on whether the Brownlow Medallist has already decided to retire at the end of the season.

Ricciuto has denied - by his words and by hopping on his right foot - that anything more than a strained ligament to his right ankle is keeping him on the sidelines.

But his future in AFL football - that seemed settled as finished at the end of the season by a pre-game interview with Crows commercial manager Phil Harper on Radio FIVEaa on Sunday afternoon - is far from resolved.

This is despite Harper's on-air remark: "We could be seeing the end of the 'Roo'."

And notice that Ricciuto has negotiated a deal with a Melbourne-based production company to collate and market his career highlights for a DVD to be released on his retirement.

"Definitely not," said Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg yesterday when asked if Ricciuto had already declared his time is up.

"He has not given us any indication - nor has his management."

Ricciuto, 32, is out of contract with the Crows at the end of the season.

He has been working to one-year deals with Adelaide. Trigg says the question of Ricciuto's future at West Lakes is to be asked and answered at the end of the year, and not before then.

"It is not unreasonable to anticipate Mark has the right to play again next year," Trigg said. "But the question mark is will his fitness let him down?

"Let's see what happens in the next month with his fitness.

"Clearly, the right time to speak with Mark is at the end of the season - and we would not want to answer the question before then."

Ricciuto has played in just six of Adelaide's past 21 games. He missed the last four of last season when struck down by Parvo virus.

Ricciuto's start to this season was wrecked by a back complaint that delayed his start until round 10.

His run of six consecutive games was broken by the sprained ankle he suffered against St Kilda on July 13 at Telstra Dome.

Adelaide coach Neil Craig has listed Ricciuto as less than a 50-50 chance to play against Port Adelaide in Saturday night's Showdown XXIII.

The intriguing question is how Craig will review Ricciuto's fitness issues considering his decision to delist 32-year-old defender Ben Hart at the end of last season.

Hart played 13 of a possible 24 games last year when he was sidelined by a broken arm, a hamstring strain and an Achilles tendon strain.

Craig's decision has been vindicated considering the fitness curse has followed Hart in his return to the SANFL with North Adelaide.

Working to Ricciuto's advantage is Adelaide's need for his leadership and match-breaking presence in attack - if only Craig can be assured the captain's fitness issues are purely bad luck.

Lets hope Roo goes around next year.
He has been inspirational and if we fall from the finals this year and he did retire it would be a sad way to end his brilliant career.

As the goose says above, it may be hard to keep him on based on fitness /decision to give Benny the flick.

I am sorry TJ, I don't think Roo should go around another year. His body is just not capable of footy at this level (hell at any level) any more. As sad as it is, it is not the end of the world. Many great players never win a grand final, Roo at least has that. In fact, he has achieved a great deal in a remarkable career. What would be sad is if he played on when his body just cannot do it anymore. Ben Hart wanted to and look what happened there. Nope, it's time to say goodbye.

I think he will play on for one more. Certainly hope he does anyway. He deserves to go out on a higher note than this season.

I cant wait for Rucci's 'Will the Power delist their injury plagued captain' story. It surely must be on the agenda since he's missed large chunks of footy in the recent past, and still has a bung knee with no sign of improving.

There is no guarantee that we will do better than we have next year. You can't carry the man just because of his legend status. Be realistic. Think with your head and not your heart.

Jenny, in the games Roo has played, he's done OK. I dont think we would be carrying him at all. If he plays as a forward, he's capable of kicking 5 regularly. My head thinks half a season of Roo is worth a full season of most other forwards we have on our list.

I disagree. How many times has he kicked 5 this year again? In the games he has played this year he has been a shadow of his former self. THAT is what is sad and it would be a tragedy to see him like that for another 12 months.

Unfortunately I've not seen enough of our games recently but I'm starting to wonder if Jenny (and her hubby) are right.

We needed to get Roo into the team when he was fit to see if he could offer us what he did last year. By all accounts he hasn't, and now he is injured again.

Needs to be looked at VERY carefully at the end of the season. Roo does strike me though as someone who knows his limits... time will tell. I hope he gets fit and plays the last few games to give us all a better indication he still has it.. or he can say a proper goodbye.

Now I know I will get howled down and accussed of biase (for some strange reason ) but I hope he gets another contract for next year and see how he goes with a solid pre season and early comp under his belt before anyone decides to do anything stupid like retire early.

Yes his body isn't holding up like it used to, but he does deserve to be on the list next year, but if it doesn't work out then he can get the send off he deserves.

It's sad, but it looks like his body just isn't up to it anymore. As much as I'd hate to see him go, even the greats have to retire...

I think this year you are going to see a huge amount of the elite AFL players from the mid to late 90's retire, sort of the end of an era, aside from Riccuito you can throw in names such as Hird, Grant, Buckley and Harvey.

Generational players come along once or twice every 20 years and they deserve to go out on their own accord. Mark Ricciuto is one of them. James Hird is another and so is Nathan Buckley.

If James Hird decided to play on next year the Essendon Football Club would do everything in its power to make this happen. Collingwood will do the same thing with Nathan Buckley. If Mark Ricciuto wanted to go around again he deserves the honour of having that privilege given to him.

As a football club we are slowly trying to build history and heritage, if we cannot find a place on the list for our best ever player, we are in trouble. It’s not like he is a liability on the field and his presence on the ground will automatically lift all of his team mates.

We have 2 generational players on our list – Mark Ricciuto and Andrew McLeod and their retirement must be held with honour and respect.

We have as many as 10 other player on the list that should be delisted before Mark Ricciuto would be considered

Assuming he wants to, what's the harm in letting him have a break, do a preseason and see if he can do some damage up forward. At 80% fitness he could do that and, unlike Hart (achilles), Buckley (hammys) and Hird (calf) Roo's injuries/illness have not been soft tissue related. If his back is ok (the key question) then I think he has a season left in him and he deserves the opportunity.

I would be happy for a club to leave this decision up to Roo! Roo is a man of honour, integrity and most importantly he ALWAYS puts the team first. If he truly believes he has one more year in him and wants to play on, I wouldn't stand in his way! No one knows better how he feels than Roo himself and I don't believe for one second that he would put himself before the club!

Hmmm....

He's only kicked 4 once in his six games. He is still capable though.

He's had a terrible run with injury this year. It happens sometimes, and doesnt mean he cant recover and improve.

I'm willing to let him make the call and just support him all the way.

Whaat?
Sacre bleu, no one is having a go at The Rooch for this article? :D

Unfortunately with the money players earn older players tend to hang in for too long. However in this case I believe Roo will know when his time is up. With his moon boot on today it looks as it might be the end of a great career. Kouta has gone with dignity and will be given a send off by Carlton. I don't think you have to necessarily have a game to have a send off from the crowd. Roo has been an ornament to the club and I wish him well with his future decision.

You know I thought of "Benny" in the same paragraph of Stiffys too ;)
Roo in a moonboot is the final straw...bugger...How frustrated he must feel:(

You got to feel for the poor bugger. All he wants to do is play footy. :(

I think Roo would like to go out on the field. I can see him signing on for one more year

As M32 said his back seems to be ok and a pre season ( regulated and graduated) should see him hit round 1 ( 1 pre season game maybe) and take it from there.

C'mon Roo, one more year. I think we are a real chance next year.

It looks like ageing 2nd and 3rd tier players such as Perrie, Welsh, Doughty, Bode, Biglands etc will get another year so surely we can afford our greatest ever player and legend one more year.

Not sure what will happen, but sensibly Roo should retire as his healing prowess is certainly no longer what it used to be.

I can understand why he would want to play another year, because he would feel totally unfulfilled going out on such a skinny playing year as he has had this year.

Keeping him on the list would be a major gamble given what has happened this year - but I still wouldn't be upset if he did go on for another year.

Common sense says retire, but emotion says "go again for 1 more year Roo"

If it sounds like I'm a bit mixed up and uncertain on this one you're dead right. :thumbsu::D

That's it in a nutshell.

Unfortunately, injuries look like they are catching up Roo. He should only go on if he/AFC are confident his body will hold up for next season. I doubt this to be the case.
