Will the Box Hill HAWKS always have a Mustang on their guernsey?

Seems a bit silly really.

Should have changed it originally or not called themselves Hawks IMO.

Discuss at your leisure:)

I was a fan of the Mustangs as a young kid, my Uncle was the Treasurer at one stage many years ago, and with the rich history that the club has, it would be disrespectful to remove the pony in my opinion.

Lets not kid ourselves, this club was a stand alone for many years, and plenty of former stalwarts have moved away from the club since its affiliation with Hawthorn, there are two sides to every story, but plenty of Hawks fans will only see one side of it, not me.

The current partnership with Box Hill should be respected, and so should Box Hill's history.

Great post and I totally agree with you.:thumbsu:

I agree.
Think the Hawks thing is unnecessary.Willy have always been the Seagulls, Werribee the Tigers etc
Dont think any of the old VFA teams have changed their name other than Box Hill. I might well be wrong though.

The mustang is a part of the box hill community, it is on every part of the city, it is the town logo, the institute logo, and i haave seen it in other places on my trecs from box hill central to the ground.

IT isnt just a part of the clubs history, but the town culture

From the official site:
OUR STORY
1921 Box Hill Junior Football Club participated in local competition

1923 Eastern Suburban Protestant Churches Football Association formed with two teams representing Box Hill; Box Hill United and Box Hill City

1932 Eastern Suburban Football League formed with Box Hill City as a foundation member

1936 Box Hill City amalgamated with Box Hill East to become the Box Hill Football Club

1937 Box Hill moved to newly constructed Box Hill City Oval

1940 Victorian Football Association comprised twelve Clubs and was a most powerful football body, rivalling the V.F.L. for popularity and drawcard players

1950 Box Hill invited to field teams in the V.F.A. for the 1951 season

1951 Box Hill Football Club made its debut in the V.F.A.

1960 Between 1960 and 1968, Box Hill suffered financially being the only club unable to play Sunday Football at home due to council restrictions

1965 Emblem the "Mustangs" was adopted by the Box Hill Football Club. When the Club joined the V.F.A. it was known as the "White Horses" and for a brief period during the mid-1960s was known as the "Stranglers

The following years can be viewed at the link below.

Getting rid of the Mustang would alienate many, many, many people. Including myself.

Abhorent inconsiderate proposal, really.
They got rid of it from the name.
I'm saying they shouldnt have, or if they were/are going to it's too late.

come on merv, you must be trying to get a few people offside. so what if they are called the hawks, the mustang/white horse is the logo for the city of white horse, and in particular, Box Hill, you cannot be serious in saying there is no need for it.

just down the road at the town hall there is a huge statue of that white horse (same pose). it is Box Hill!

Seriously not trying to get anyone off side.
Although not overly familiar with the area I am well aware of the mustangs significance, and i am all for it remaining.
Think what I am trying to say is they should never have gone the compromise because it makes no sense to the unaffiliated.
They should either be the Mustangs with a Mustang on guernsey or the Hawks with a Hawk.
Preferably the former.
Dont think they need the Hawks name to get interest from Hawk fans.
The colors and affiliation is enough.

Would it be disrespectful for hawthorn to borrow their guernsey for away/clash games ?

Agree on the hawks - especially after the 'velcro' hawk stuff in 96 - we didnt like being treat as a junior partner and its bad form to do the same to Box Hill

I don't know about anyone else, but Box Hill are always the Mustangs in conversation (or the 'stangers, 'stangs, etc).

I might refer to them as the Hawks reserves, or Hawthorn Reserves, but generally think of Box Hill as the Mustangs.

Do not ever ever change the name. That would be pure blasphemy to Box Hill people.

I like the idea that we can respect the original club at the same time as have a mutually beneficial relationship. It's great to see Hawthorn supporters getting behind Box Hill.

Yes, there were people unhappy with the change to affiliate with Hawthorn but overall I think Box Hill won't be looking back from here. The club is really improving.

IT as a merger basically - a compromise and a good one as Box HIll would have folded otherwise unfortunately.

As a Box Hill & City of Whitehorse resident, and a lifelong Hawk - I really like the jumper.

It would have been fine to remail Box Hill Mustangs - possibly better as it may have kept a few more of the old fans around, but to dilute it further would be idiotic.

And I would like to see Hawthron wear the jumper one day - maybe next year to celebrate the 10th year. Box Hill could play the curtain raiser.

What harm would it do, to completely remove the "Hawks" from Box Hill? Just be known as the Box Hill football club with the unofficial nickname of the Mustangs?

i think we should have an afl reserves competition like the old days. i used to love going to the footy early to check out the reserves and then onto the big one! and then 3 games on grand final day on the g! wake up at 9 and watch the 18's. footy has lost it's spirit to an extent, starting to become more and more business driven like every other code in the world. next it'll be free agency, mid season trades, 59 different coloured alternative strips. shame on you wayne jackson. i'll piss in your letterbox one day.

AFL had no choice but to merge its clubs to a lower league. clubs were resting players in the VFL way before the affiliation became official.

we used to have mid-season trades, so you being the traditionalist you are would love to see it i would of thought, so your contradicting yourself.

i like that idea also, to be honest, i would love to see hawthorn adopt that jumper as its away jumper, altering it slightly by removing the mustang (no, not the BHH, im talking HFC).

as for the curtain raiser, very much doubt the AFL would allow for a VFL club to stamp all over their beloved MCG surface before a game for 2 and a half hours. its not like geelong where Geelong control the ground.

The use of the "Hawks" in the Box Hill name is, in my opinion, a big reason why we probably have the best alliance of all of the affiliated clubs.

Essendon and Bendigo are a joke, they hardly even train there.

Williamstown has jumped around between Collingwood and Bulldogs

Werribee has been Bulldogs and Part North

Sandringham has been Melbourne and now St.Kilda

Casey has been Melbourne and St.kilda

Preston and Carlton seem ok.

Richmond and Coburg alright.

By embracing Hawthorn and Box Hill they formed a strong bond.

I have no issue with there being a Mustang on "their" jumper. I like it. Its a nod to the past. Hawthorn helped save Box Hill financially, it worked out well for all parties. The City of Whitehorse, Whitehorse Road, like it has been said its all about the horse in box hill.

Take the horse away and its a slap in the face to all Box Hill Stalwalds.

.

Lived in John Street (off Harrow) for 20 formative years and was delighted when the Hawks and Box Hill became affiliated in a latter time.

The White Horse is for Box Hill what the White House is to Washington ... that's why the town hall (where I was a dance hall dandy in the 1950-60s) is part replica of the US presidential home.

Footnote: I didn't play for Bockie but against them with Coburg. When the then Lions visited City Oval I was the recipient of many jeers and boos running out in navy with a red sash, being a fairly well known local lout .. . err young man.

When Coburg dumped me I played nearer to home for Surrey Hills Presbyterian FC (later became Koonung FC) until 38 years of age.

SHPFC 1960 we wore the Hawthorn jumper with pride. A Grade Premiers.

This is probably what I was trying to say in the first place.
Having a Mustang and being called the Hawks seems pointless.
Affiliation alone is enough to get Hawks folk along.

ps Very handsome even then Gary :)

Just my opinion so no disrespect meant.

Box Hill FC was a financial basket case that was ready to be wound up but for the AFL dropping the reserves requiring AFL Clubs to find a partner at VFL level, that being Hawthorn.

The model that exists now is dominated by Hawthorn who tip in close to $500k annually.

I would drop the mustang completely, change the strip to a modern one that represents the now Box Hill Hawks and drive a wedge into the eastern suburbs of Melbourne as the VFL Club that represents the Eastern suburbs.

I wouldnt be surprised if a guernsey change isn't already under serious considertaion :thumbsu:
