Who should we be selecting?

History says that 70 - 80% of players under 22 picked in the test side have been A grade players who where making good runs in shield cricket.
Tbf the history also says, and this is a dirty little secret that Australian cricket doesn't like to talk about it so that's why I'm bringing it up, is that picking guys under 24yo has often been a disaster for everyone involved.

post WW2, you've got Harvey, Walters, O'Neill, Slater and Clarke averaging over 40 while playing 10 or matches as aged 23 and under.

I don't know why you spent so much time talking about NSW stuff when you clearly don't know what was going on. In the bold case, Doran scored boatloads of runs in junior pathways and Tasmania made him a big offer when he was 18yo (likely both money and a certain spot in the team). NSW didn't match it. That was different to him not being good enough, he was just poached at a very young age

as it so happens, jake doran has ended up doing nothing in his career and probably should have toughed it out in NSW for a couple more seasons
Doran for me should be level or ahead of Philippe for the post-Inglis era of keepers (as Inglis is obviously the heir to Carey in a couple of years).

Hold up.

Isn't Doran 30-ish himself?

Doran is a few months older than Philippe and Inglis is a couple of years older than both. Curtis (26) is the only other one getting games younger than them. And the other options are older than Inglis (Peirson) or not good enough for the top level (Harper, Nielsen)

Yeah so Doran wont be anywhere near it post-Inglis.

I was going to say Matthew Gilkes, but he too is 27 this year

Woohoo, back to back Shield titles for the Redbacks!
McAndrew is some player, bit of a smokey for the test side tbh. Played extremely well.

Think he's a bit of a John Hastings. Very good at this level but probably doesn't have the weapons at test level

I barely got to see a ball get bowled unfortunately but his match stats are great, and good to see Kez maintain his batting form from across the last 12 months.
