Movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Will a 9yr old kid sit through this with no prior knowledge or are we best seeing 'Parental Guidance'?

Is it over 3 hours? How long?

It is about 2 hours and 40 minutes IIRC (plus leading trailers etc )

The film is rated "M" too and is quite graphic in some scenes (a number of heads get chopped etc), some people do consider that stuff.

especially with the scene with the Great Goblin who says to Gandalf, "What are you going to do now, Wizard?", then Gandalf just slices his gut open and the Goblin says, "That'll do it", was poor and didn't look good.

Hated that scene. No idea what Jackson was thinking there.

Golum, as always, stole the show. Masterful character.

The Gollum scene was excellent, had the whole audience captivated.

"That'll do it." Ugh. Atrocious.

Overall, pretty decent. Nowhere near as good as Lord of the Rings, not as good as Les Mis.

It's not even in the Top 3 films I have seen this week. Not that it wasn't good.

I read the book when I was a lot younger. One of my favourite works of fiction so I may be a bit biased.

I have the books but decided (lazily) to watch the film first. It was pretty good, but the thing that annoyed me was how 'up it's own ass' the start felt. We didn't need the nod to Frodo, or have him in it whatsoever.

That's a fair view but a lot of others enjoyed seeing them again. After all it is the story of Bilbo and he was writing a story/autobiography. What I didn't really like was Ian Holm narrating the prologue. I know it's his story but Cate Blanchett did it so well in the fellowship and Elves do have that all knowing persona.

Did you see it in 2D or 3D? 24 fps or 48fps?

3D, 48fps. I didn't really notice much difference, though most of the people I saw it with didn't like the change.

Saw it today and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Don't really get some of the criticisms, but each to his/her own.

Will be quite epic to have all 3 films along with the LOTR trilogy to show my boys when they're older.

Saw it today as well I loved it might have to read the hobbit again, you can see what he is trying to do with the extra parts and I liked them

Peter Jackson would have been stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Make it more children's tale and piss off the movie followers.

I first read the hobbit and then Lotr when I was 12 and I love the books and the movie

His choices had nothing to do with pissing people off its simple maths

Make one kids movie of the hobbit and make a few hundred million or make another trilogy and make a few billion

I liked the Hobbit when I was a kid. But now that I'm an adult I'd rather watch a LOTR esque fantasy epic than a whimsical kids movie. If it'd been the latter there would have been a lot more of the "that'll do it" type lines, watered down action etc. Bring on the next middle earth trilogy I say.

I suppose it would be silly for Peter Jackson to make The Hobbit an entirely different film in terms of style. He's not catering specifically for readers of the books. He's catering for the market of movie goers that enjoyed the LOTR. It may have been different had The Hobbit been made first.

The problem is that the book isn't well suited to a LOTR-style epic, and it shows.

I just wish they'd made the movies the other way around.

I reckon it was great. Surprised everyone saying the tone was "too serious". It had lots of humorous moments in comparison to the Lord of The Rings, I thought Jackson captured the style of the book pretty well. Also special mention to Martin Freeman, captured the Bilbo character to a tee, the scene with Gollum was the clear highlight of the film. Overall I loved it, and can't wait for next year!

Loved it, only behind Two Towers/on par with Fellowship for mine. Would have preferred less CGI and more costumes but it still looked fantastic.

Enjoyed it without loving it. Wish I saw the 2D version though, didn't see/feel the need for the 3D and it can be a distraction

Had someone bring in their sooky kid though (was behind so never saw it, but only cried so assume it was less than 5) who seriously does that these days. The thing sooked up about 5 times

Am also curious to the young bilbo explanation. He should've still looked as he did in LOTR. Could be something as simple as the original bilbo not being upto filming a trilogy etc or something more superficial

Also remember LOTR had a scene of bilbo originally finding the ring? The scene played out different in the hobbit (not that it bothers me, just thought it was note worthy)

Saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. No doubt the Gollum scene was the highlight, but most of the movie was enjoyable.

A couple of parts were a bit meh (Radagast) but were needed for future storylines.

Can't wait till boxing day next year for the second one.
