The inevitable umpire thread

I am curious - why would Troy Pannell say that? You're joking aren't you? If not the guy should not be umpiring.
He went to school in Geelong surrounded by Geelong supporters. I guess after years of torment his anger grew and grew by the day... if you remember he was front and centre of the Adelaide umpiring controversy... no prizes for guessing why.

That Casboult non holding the ball/deliberate out of bounds was the single most corrupt umpiring decision I've seen all year to date.

I said as such in the preview thread.

I was mates with Troy Pannell at school... he always said he'll 'make Geelong pay' if he ever officiated in our games.
He was officiating afl games when he was in school?

That's a bloody outrage!

Look, still one a quarter isn't it, which given the stupid things we do....
Carlton beat us fair and square and were up for it. We tried hard at times but the decision making, skill errors and lack of team play was hard to watch from the Cats. I just want to quickly comment about the umpires. I thought the umpiring wasnt great today but Ive seen worse. It in no way changed the end result. I was watching Troy Pannell today quite closely. Dont quote me but I thought we got very little from him in our favour but the opposite for Carlton. Anything small in nature including a 50 against Blizacs he gave to the Blues and anything similiar to geelong he turned a blind eye and called play on. At one stage a Carlton player ran past him and he patted them on the bum. He patted Stringer on the bum in his infamous 17 frees to one game against the Crows at Ethihad earlier this year. This patting on the bum infuriates me. He has no business touching the players and to me it is almost saying he is in their corner with them. Would love to know what his free kick count was today and if anyone has the time, what is his free kick count for home teams vs opposition teams. Could be an interesting stat I reckon. I get the impression that he is just one of those umpires that loves to make a decision that gains him a cheer and bugger all decisions that deliver a boo. So if thats the case the home team is always in a good position.

I am going to assume you're posting that sarcastically.

I am but sadly that's how the umpire would have rationalised it. If we still had an umpires boss they'd say it's the correct decision for that reason.

Yeah that's what he said. But I would argue he did not have reasonable opportunity to do so.

15.2.3 Holding the Football – Prior Opportunity/No Prior Opportunity

(a) Where the field Umpire is satisfied that a Player in possession of the football:
(i) has had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against that Player if the Player does not Correctly Dispose of the football immediately when they are Correctly Tackled;
(ii) has not had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against that Player if, upon being Correctly Tackled, the Player does not Correctly Dispose or genuinely attempt to Correctly Dispose of the football after being given a reasonable opportunity to do so; or
(iii) has driven their head into a stationary or near stationary opponent, the Player shall be regarded as having had prior opportunity.

(b) Except in the instance of a poor bounce or throw up by the field Umpire or a throw in by the boundary Umpire, a Player who takes possession of the football while contesting a bounce or throw up by a field Umpire or a boundary throw in by a boundary Umpire, shall be regarded as having had prior opportunity.

I'm glad the Guthrie holding the ball decision is being discussed here - I'm not typically one to get overly animated during the footy, particularly towards the umpiring, but that one had me losing my shit. Absolutely horrendous call - the worst I've seen since play on was called on Hawkins as he was walking in to take a set shot a few years ago (from memory, also against Carlton).

The problem is though SJ, that although that is an incorrect call (he was being tackled before he even had the ball, was dumped straight after, it's a ball up every day of the week), the umpires will come out and justify it like they do every week.
Just like the Danger on.... whoever it was, holding the ball "in the view of the umpire he made a legitimate attempt to dispose of the ball and so decided to call play on" which then led to a throw "the umpire was blindsighted or umpire deemed it a legal disposal" which led to a goal which led to the loss.
It's been happening every week.

Carlton supporters next to me at the game could not believe the Guthrie decision. It has taken prior opportunity to another level.

He was in training so to speak and that was his ambition.
Is the Troy Pannell that was in training at school the same Troy Pannell that started umpiring in '92 in the WRFL?

Guthrie pinged for holding the ball when tackled to ground .2 of a second after getting the ball
I measured the time differential between taking possession and being tackled as 0.175 seconds, but hey that's splitting hairs

He wasn't pinged for prior opportunity, he was pinged for no genuine attempt made to dispose the ball once tackled.

How does prior opportunity differ from 'no genuine attempt to dispose of the ball'?

I reckon Guthrie just assumed Foot would call no prior, and with some justification, but when that didn't occur Cam was screwed as he had made no attempt to get the pill out.
