Putting aside the mental health side of things and talking purely football, close to zero chance he plays for us again.

Don’t think he wants to leave but too much damage has been done in the last 12 months.

Tom Morris reporting on FC:

D-day is tomorrow. Hopeful he’s at training tomorrow but the club doesn’t know.

This is what happens when a game has > 2000 accredited 'journalists' and almost as many programs and pods casts covering the it.

They have to say something. Anything to fill up air time and sell blocs of advertising.

Their actual raison d’être.

Bloke was part of burying someone last week, could be a family member, who knows. Pretty valid reason to miss training I would have thought.
it was his grandma

I remember when i lost my aboriginal side grand ma

my dad took 3 months off work and i took 2 months off high school

Sadly, the cutthroat clickbait footy media requires people not to mourn a loss

Obviously I'm not privvy to the interal expectations of the club but if he was close to meeting what they expect, I'd begin dangling the VFL carrot in front of him

Ie. If you do X & Y over the next 2-3 weeks, you will be available for VFL selection.

I feel like he's in the sort of situation where he needs some light at the end of the tunnel or a goal to work towards.

Can I just say how proud I am of all the posters who shared some of their stories earlier in this thread. I went from embarrassed of this place to very very proud.

I'm here for anyone who needs it always. And want to reiterate nothing I post is personal or meant with malice.

Sometimes I can be a dick and I'm sorry for that but you've shown incredible courage and heart and you’re all awesome for it.

I've shared some of my story before so I'll refrain here but know you're not alone.

I’m not sure how him having time off for the death of a family member is gonna go against him? Some of these journos are ****ed.
He had a go at them in the podcast and again on social media.

One thing we've learned over the years that nobody is as thin skinned and vindictive as the cabal of campaigners that make up the scourge of society that are football journalists.

You're a good person Mike.

The media in AFL is only getting worse. I remember the last year of Nathan Buckley’s coaching, they were trying to get him sacked the whole season. Collingwood sack him, the same journos ask how Collingwood could treat a club legend so poorly. Horrible.

Spot on to many tv shows and not much to talk about, i remember in the 1960s we had 2 champion players in Pentridge prison for serious offences allowed to train on Thursday and play Saturday.
The press at the time the great Alf Brown & co kept in quiet imagine todays afl press scummy Morris & Barrett no hope.

Yet we do it every year...
I assume you are referencing the draft which puts in place a contract between the the three parties to the competition - the league, the clubs and the players - who all agree to be bound by that contract and which allow players to be moved, to move, or just not re-emplyed. But the outcome of a contract is a very different scenario from a club of the AFL being able to say 'you're out the door because we don't like' or in a more real world scenario 'poor bugger you've done your ACL ... sorry you're no value to us, out you go' ... so I call false equivalence.
Clubs and the AFL have obligations which are just basic rights that every employee is entitled to.

Following up my previous post. I long ago realised I wanted to be one of the men that blazed a trail for others by speaking openly about my mental health issues. If not me, then who? I have a wife and children, I have a well-paid job, I have a family home and an investment property, I have a comfortable financial position, and I have friends and family that care about me. I’ve also suffered from anxiety most of my life and had periods of depression, particularly after the birth of both my children. Why do I say these things? It’s simple, it’s to show that mental health (like cancer) does not care about your life status, financial position or other circumstances. This is why I struggle when I read comments from people conflating a high salary with positive mental health. e.g. player x is paid far more than any of us and should therefore play well every week and also try having some real problems in life. Fortunately these views don’t appear to be the majority. I know this isn’t the right thread for this discussion but given the nature of the discussion in here I felt like it was the best place right now.
All power to you mate ...
I think there are quite a few impressionable young men who love footy, but regardless of the money find that playing at that level sucks all the fun and spontaneity nout of the game and they play because it is a passport to a better future existence.
