Jarred Moore has been on our list for 8 years a significant amount of time as more than half of his draft have departed the scene before this year commenced.
Sadly his career is littered with inconsistency interspersed with memorable moments.
Back in 2005 his first year there was actually some fanfare when he was first picked for the team, unexpectedly but his form in the ressies comp had been hot, something that would become an all too common theme.
His 3 games that season and there next were not much to write home about and put down to a learning experience but he was given another contract.
2007 he was given a little bit of a shake up about his fitness and reports are that he worked very hard through the 2008 preseason and 2008 was probably his best year of football. Though it started with him missing a gettable goal late in round 1 of a 2 point loss to St Kilda but he began to fill a role of hard nut small forward who baulked at nothing and presented in smart positions and even had fill in spells in the middle. In the run home late to the finals he presented as alternate forward option and would score from set plays and took 3 Brownlow votes against the lions in round 22. The season was good enough to see young Jarred elevated to the leadership group. A clear indication they thought the young man’s character was very good, something we’ve seen over the ensuing years of his own disappointment yet to assist the growth of others to be correct. But his form was patch to downright poor
2009 was hoped to be a big year but his form was patchy and at times just downright poor. He was struggling to run out games and his fitness and foot speed was a concern. His disposal often worsened as games went on and again missed a gettable shot on goal in a close finish with st Kilda. One thing that never lacked though was his courage always putting himself in for the hard ball or play and there had been an upturn in form late in the year when at the MCG against Collingwood he put himself in harm’s way to punch the ball forward which set up a goal for Bevan. but in doing so he had broken his rubs and punctured a lung.
2010 was again not a great season despite much game time. The fitness problems still plagued him and on the big grounds he was becoming a strategic point for the opposition. in the embarrassing loss to Melbourne it was highlighted by Melbourne deliberately setting up plays using the spread against Moore and his opponent running on again and found too much space. Moore was not just hurting them enough wit the ball to allow this. He always chased, never not however once in space he couldn’t keep up. but he never gave up and had a big last term against the dockers building pressure in a tight win in Perth that saw him stand for a mark from a hospital ball that ended up with his head getting crunched and concussed.
But at the MCG in the semi final against the dogs Jarrod Harbrow off the half back flank exposed his lack of speed and set up many of the dogs goals that night and Moore was guilty of fumbling the ball in the last and seeing it turn around on him for a goal.
Longmire clearly had little planned for Moore. He got a couple of fill games in 2011 and it's feasible given the rest time Moore needed the sub rule hurt his career too, players needed to spend more time on the field and Moore was just not up to the task and his lack of ball and quality if disposal didn’t do it.
2012 appears Moore was told his role would be as captain and pseudo coach to the boys in the ressies. I’m sure to any player that would be a kick in the guts to be told you won’t be playing senior football but it would appear Jarred took the task on, showing again that as person Jarred is all class and warrants plenty of respect form the Swans fans.
For all his athletic deficiencies Moore has never baulked, never failed to make an effort or get to the right spot, never failed to chase even when he knew it would likely be futile and never heisted to attempt to make the right play. Sadly his career didn’t end with glory and the history of the stat book will record him as another side note battler but we who have seen the effort and the contribution know better.
So Jarred Moore, Thank you and good luck whatever happens next.
