No knock on King’s career
Steven King didn’t have a great Grand Final, but then again, not one of the four ruckmen on the field took a mark. But two days after the Grand Final he went in for a shoulder operation to repair damage after dislocating it and also had a knee cleaned up. King will play on next year and possibly play a few more games in the VFL with young Ben McEvoy coming through. King, who has always put team before self, doesn’t mind being a stop-gap and will take a ruck coaching role at St Kilda. His ultimate aim when he finishes next season will be to get into a coaching role at a footy club. I can guarantee it wouldn’t be at Geelong with Mark Blake still there as they won’t be exchanging Christmas cards.

Not the worst idea ever

sounds like a good idea, get some game time into big ben but if he struggles kingy can come in. i reckon if we make the grand final again we'd want king in there not mcevoy tho, especially an uninjured king

Was amazing to see King play one-handed for the last third of the season. We probably made a mistake sticking with him, but eh. It's hard to leave out a bloke with that much character when his replacement is just developing. Am happy to hear McEvoy will get a crack at it next year though - it's definitely his time.

Re the bit about the four ruckmen not taking a mark between them in the GF, that was one way in which the wet worked against us. I made a few predictions which came true - Ablett would be good but not brilliant (reigning brownlow medallists never play a blinder), Stevie J would be useless (no way he was going to come up) and Ottens would also struggle without the benefit of the two week break he'd had before the prelim.

All three came true, but the weather conditions made it hard for us to capitalise on the third one.

I don't buy the weather working against us. When the rain was at it's worst we were dominating in the midfield. Failure to turn this domination into goals is what cost us.
I don't believe that Kings dislocated shoulder was a function of his age or any percieved frailty. I'm glad it didn't happen to Ben or Rhys.
I have also heard that he has problems with either his knee's or hips ( can't remember which ). I'm not entirely sure when this problem became serious, but I was certainly noticing that he was fairly slow and didn't jump much in the tail end of the season. I think he did have an operation (s) at the end of season so I guess we need to see how he pulls up for the pre-season.

I like the idea - club and player both benefit: the saints get a fine ruckman and former captain to train the young fellas, and kingy gets work experience for a post-footy career. :thumbsu:
Have to agree. I like Kingy

King's done his shoulder many times, so it is loose (agree that it has little to do with his age). There was talk of a hip injury (I don't think it was ever listed on the official list), but to be honest he's had just about everything - knee, calf, hamstring, achilles etc

As I said, the Ottens thing was "one way in which the rain worked against us". In general it didn't do us too much harm because we smashed them in the midfield and had enough shots on goal to win. It's all academic but I do think we would have exploited Ottens more on a dry day, and it may have benefited Kosi too. The rain wasn't the reason we lost, however.

Hows this for a consipracy theory to make room in the Salary Cap.

You offer King a one year contract for ( example ) $100 000 to play football.
You offer King a two year contract as ruck coach, back ended , for example $100 000 first year , $800 000 second year after he retires from Football.

The way I see it he would only have $200,000 counted in the Salary cap.

I have not basis at all to suspect that this is happening, it just occurred to me that it could be done.
