No I'm calling you one because you believe it.

Haha ok.

That article was from years ago, it's not like he's coming out now defending the AI.
He planned it to be this way from the start.

He even mentions the way Trico has a mind of it's own again at E3 this year:

When we ask about Trico, who the player needs to work with to solve certain puzzles, but who clearly has a will and intelligence of its own, he admits that the beasts’s obstinacy has been a tricky balancing act. “To be honest, we’re still fine-tuning Trico’s behaviours,” he says. “There are two extremes – if you can fully control a character, what’s the point? It becomes a pet. But at the opposite end if you can’t control it at all it becomes a nuisance, a barrier to progression. We’re still trying to find the balance.”

It's quite clearly deliberate, but as he mentions, perhaps the balance when too far one way...

With the amount of development problems this game had it wouldn't surprise me at all that they saw it as almost unfixable all the way back in early development so just ran with this story that it's intentionally done. I can imagine with the size of Trico that they would have had to change quite a lot to stop him being completely stupid.

Dog-Bird AI fine tuning is the new fine tuning of over powered multiplayer shooter weapons/recoil/fire rate/accuracy.

Looking forward to downloading update 1.02 through to 1.15 and reading all the associated whinging about how they stuffed him in update 1.04 but need to bring back Trico 1.06 as he was best and they should've left him alone.

You could be right.

Although his 'AI' improves as the game goes on, which lends itself to the 'natural relationship bond' building up, and someone dismisses that the dev team just couldn't make it work.

I just want a boots on the ground Trico - this whole flying through the air stuff is so lame and made for ADD kids.

Started this today.

So far haven't really had any issues controlling Trico. With that said I haven't been in control of it for too long so far.

Very much enjoying the experience offered at the moment. The main issue I have is the camera feels slow, there's a massive dead zone so you have to move the right stick pretty much all the way in one direction to move the camera, it just makes it all feel really slow when at times something quicker would be much nicer.

As for the controls, there's a little bit to get used to in terms of the movement of both the boy and Trico. But overall it has only caused minor frustration so far, and it's probably mainly been with the boy just not moving as smoothly at times than I'd like. Although he's not meant to be a Nathan Drake so I can understand the slowish movement and constant fumbling that the boy does.

Graphically I'm actually surprised at how good the game looks. Trico is absolutely beautifully created, from the mannerisms, to the movements and overall heavily feathered look it's a magnificent creation. There are some big framerate drops mainly in open areas, but I'd say there's nothing that detracts from the overall experience.

Enjoying so far and definitely looking forward to continuing.

Finished.

What a magnificent tale!

Yes, there's some frustration with Trico and overall movement. But that all counts for naught by the time you're done with the game. As the tale being told is simply brilliant. Beautifully fleshed out and told, I couldn't have asked for more.

The more I played as well the more I understand the controls of Trico. I keep saying to myself "well they could've done this..." but then I feel like it'd turn Trico from a living beast into a robot. They do so well in turning Trico into a realistic character throughout the entire game with all its realistic mannerisms and even some things you wouldn't expect, that I really couldn't have asked it to play much differently.

I couldn't recommend this game to everyone, as you definitely need some patience when playing it. And it may well be worth playing it with a walkthrough just to avoid some of that frustration. But this is a brilliantly told, directed and playing game overall.

So glad I decided to play through it.

When it's cheaper I'll grab this for sure

Told the missus to get it for me for Christmas, she did.
Hoping to start it tonight.

$39. Geez. Paid twice that.
Finished the game. I found it quite an engrossing story (although for the first 50% of the game, there isn't a lot being told, more so you build a bond with T-rico and expand your combined abilities a bit)

Controlling him (specific commands) wasn't too bad. He generally did what I wanted, occasionally took the lead and only a couple of times had to be coerced into the right spot for a jump.

He seemed to have a few annoying spots on him when you climb, sometimes forced through the camera angle, like you think you jump on the outside of his leg, then suddenly your stuck at his armpit having to climb back around to the outside.

No spoilers but the most frustrating part for me was trying to roll/control a cage - hamster wheel style in the latter half of the game.

I consulted a youtube video guide (tetraninja) a few times. One particular time was through lack of patience, a damn switch was right near I just didn't see it, so the other times were more wanting to confirm I was doing the right thing.

I was hoping for stats at the end to see how long I took. I got the under 15hrs trophy but not the under 5hrs, wouldn't have got near that and I suspect I'd have gone close to the 15hrs but not too sure.
I read about a new game + type thing (you can continue) and I know there's some unlockables (trophies mention such things) but I haven't seen where.

ICO was good for a replay as you got better weapons (and English subtitles if I recall that far back) Never played SOTC.
