Just re read the Guardian article
Yes in some parts 20% falls others less so
But still a significant impact which im not sure all Conservative supporters would actually want in reality
My impression was there was some effect on rental prices, small overall effect on house prices, but the article either did not, or could not, conclude what the impact was on the university sector, which suffered a large drop in funding. Some young people may find house prices lowering a little and uni costs rising a lot. Or governments have to throw in more taxpayer funds. There was also no insight into how it affected critical industries that rely on immigrants, such as nursing and aged care, which is where the rubber will really meet the road.

They seem to be appropriating authoritarian policy like social media account requirement

Let’s not forget they actually used reserve terrorism powers to deport Novak so they have no problem using trumpian overrrach
The Novak deportation was enormously popular at the time; is it now a stick to beat the Liberals with?

Popular with who? It was massive overreach and shows if Australian executive get powere, they won’t hesitate to abuse it

The highest court found Novak had done nothing wrong that was my point not whattaboutisn

You don't remember all of the 'Novax' jibes and people aghast at the idea of allowing an unvaccinated person into the country? Look up the BF posts from the time; it was a lonely road arguing against government overreach.

It's tempting to view Tony Abbott as increasingly becoming the Mark Latham of the Coalition, but the difference is that Labor have had the good sense to disown Latham.

Abbott is still lauded by way too many Libs, as he all the while renders them unelectable.

The usual suspects. As I said the court found him participating was completely legal. It was ministerial over reach
But suppose you are correct, let’s say the anti Novak sentiment was widespread

That makes a lie of the ministers claim he might be a lightning rod for anti vax demonstrations is a bit of a lie too

Anyway I reiterate my point was Australian politicians cannot be trusted to to not over reach the powers they give themselves, whether it’s ’populist’ or not

And the very blunt and clumsy Airbnb tax in Victoria suppressed prices
Without increasing unemployment or reducing economic growth.

If there were more levers to achieve this outcome, they should keep pulling them. Evennif you think it is blunt and clumsy, it had the desired effect.

It was overreact, and helped cement the rise of the Teals.

The people happy either didn't like Novak or they already support hardline border controls.

It was mostly the bolded, and there were an overwhelming majority of them. The whole reason the Morrison government abused their powers to deport him was because they were courting popularity.

If you argued against it at the time you were labelled a cooker.

In the middle of a global pandemic, ordinary people needed a vaccination in order to work and travel, and some people are surprised people had a problem with a multimillionaire being allowed to swan in unvaccinated because they could hit a ball well?

If you argued against it at the time you were labelled a cooker.
Cooker or selfish arseh*le, take your pick.

I saw it more as a cynical distraction which is even worse motives

The court supported him.
But that’s not my point

Angus has a new slogan

Also wants govt to subsidise more fuel storage

Also wants govt to balance the budget
Standard Libs in opposition playbook.

It worked, back when the Coalition still held the unearned mantle of better economic managers.

Now that the majority of Australians see that as the horseschitte it always was, this tactic is as much use as mammaries on a male bovine.

The balance the budget shtick is especially funny given the Tories tripled the debt in their 9 years, and most of that wasn't the covid stimulus either.

But then politicians from both majors speak a good game in opposition then renege from it once in office.

No structural surplus from the Hawke/Keating years and mining boom was a one off.

Libs better pray that Future Made in Australia drives a big Renewables boom cause they aint getting that lie to shield them back ever again.

I can understand why the Liberals wouldn't bother with new policies until the 6 months before the election. They need the clear air to hold One Nation at bay and be able to utter whatever stupid thing the ON voters want to hear, before they get on with the task of developing an actual, credible policy.

There is only one policy that would make the LNP relevant….
And that’s a tax on gas…. But that’s never going to happen because they’ve sold them selves to the fossil fuel industry.

Hastie has flirted with the idea… but doesnt have the balls.
