Autopsy The Luke Beveridges coaching idiocy throws away the game thread.

Surely there is someone in the list management department who is accountable for the thin ruck stocks we possess.

Instead of having about 20 smalls we can rotate in and out who don't really do much. I mean sure hes probably a good bloke but someone like Cal Porter, whats his purpose on the list. Why can't we have extra ruck depth instead.

I’ve seen posts here that it’s incredible we complain after that performance, and others last year that how can we complain after making finals. Then there are some who think criticising the club isn’t something that true, die-hard members should do. As if being critical of your club erodes your right to support them.

Well I’m ****ing done with that. I love Bevo and the players that climbed the mountain in 2016, that will never change. But we are now wasting what might be a generational midfield with a complete disdain for the ruck position and consistently poor team selection. It is embarrassing how easy it is for teams to dominate stoppage because we are now just giving it up in the ruck.

Bevo won the ultimate. At this stage he’s actually inhibiting us from winning the next one.

Ffs get some ******* pride you lot.

Geeeeloong got their usual quota of dodgy frees, we had two on the bench, one from the first quarter, If they gloat it is a hollow victory. They are going no where, the same since 2012, make finals and ******* crash out.
Why are you talking about Geelong?

Why aren't you talking about the idiot playing Dunkley as our #1 ruck?

Thanks for these GO.
Just so I can see what the norm is, couuld you post equivalent matchup tables for say Keath, Williams and Crozier please?

I feel sorry for Gardner because the last goal (to Rohan) was a shocking turnover from Macrae. Hard to blame him for that. In fact Rohan's a shocking matchup generally. Rohan would be one of the fastest players on the ground.

There's a lot of OTT Gardner bashing that goes on here. I realise he's not the answer and we need Cordy back ASAP but I thought he did OK tonight. Pretty poor form from those who were getting stuck into him from the opening bounce.

Yeah Gardner really only cost us one goal, game was pretty much over when Macrae had that turnover.

Not going to disagree over the frustrations of watching the mistakes get made on repeat. All I want at this point, for the last few games, finals or not, is just for some recognition and rectifications to be made.

He's barely made any so far, and even when he has and it's worked, he's reverted to type almost the very next weeks. E.g. Bruce rucking last week. I want it too, but it won't happen. From the outside, it seems we have a very autocratic coach. Unless the club puts something in place to alter that dynamic, I don't see the value in going forward with someone who thinks that is a viable management strategy in a sporting club. #Bevoout

Tell me if I have this right. We lose by less than 2 goals to what is likely the eventual premiers, having 2 on the bench for a good chunk of the game, and people are calling for coaches and players to be sacked?

After being six goals up...

If I didn't know any better, if someone told me English was an 18-year old kid playing his first game, I would believe you, cause that's how he looks in most games he's played. Still pencil thin and has no awareness, composure or decision making ability.
His last 4-6 weeks have been woeful. Showed signs earlier in the season but he’s so far off it and most of it is between his ears. He’s just too nice to play in the ruck.

Stop making excuses about 2 players down. That happened after half time. If we'd put our heads down instead of getting sucked into thinking "this is easy, we must be top of the ladder material. I'm gonna drink my own bathwater after this match" and put everything into the 2nd we would've had a good chance.

Apart from the players that you automatically put your hands over your eyes for when they get the near the footy (I don't need to list then here) our reliables were very very quiet too.

I've seen this sooo many times over so many years, tonight (after the 1st quarter) was probably one of the most disappointing matches I've witnessed. Lived in hope they'd give a yelp, but nah. Same [emoji90] different decade.

Beat West Coast and we should play finals

Lose to West Coast and we won’t play finals

If we lose to them, it’s time to give some players a goodbye game and then play everyone else out of contract to see who might earn themselves another one

To say "the gameplan was fine with English in the 1st quarter" misses the point

When the game is on the line, when you're two players down, that's when you need a ruck.

Fill in the hole behind, move some bodies or settle everyone the f**k down with a big mark and a goal

Don't know about the rest of you but I found that game totally draining. I could see Ground Hog day occurring with the same old problems that have haunted us all season: a useless Bruce, an almost as useless ruck situation, unfit or out of form players being persisted with etc etc. My angst got the better of me and I behaved badly in front of family members. To them I apologise, but really, the team management is driving me to drink right now and no amount of spin from Bev and co can alleviate my frustration.

Said it before, will say it again. Tim English will become an asset once he gets a competent second ruck partner.

Until then we are going to suffer the consequences. Which happens all too often.
I’m not sure you can carry him and another ruck.

Weird game.

We looked great in the first quarter. We were playing with a confidence I haven't seen all year. No idea where it came from but we were magnificent. As always though you have to wonder how much of that was Geelong not showing up and letting us do what we want. There was always the question of whether or not we could sustain it and what would happen once Geelong got going.

For the next three quarters it really just felt like us desperately defending our first quarter lead. We were slowly outplayed and outmuscled by a better and more experienced team. It did feel like we went into our shells a bit after that first quarter. Maybe because at that point it became our game to lose.

Personally I felt like this was our least disappointing loss of the season. You have to imagine the early injuries factored into the result and we all know we had some passengers tonight.

Enough has been said about the guys who gave us nothing tonight so I won't mention them. However, it does seem to be a common theme that one or two players are playing absolute shockers every week.

The positives:

Naughton: Absolutely love watching this kid play. He's so bloody exciting and he's got xfactor. We will win a lot of matches off his boot.

Hunter: So impressive yet again. We've missed him this year.

Will Hayes: Showed some real maturity and gave us plenty of run. Came up with a huge play in the final quarter which almost got us home.

Overall I wasn't too bothered about the loss in the context of finals. I'd probably rather not limp into finals this year because I just don't see us making any impact. I'm not interested in another embarrassing first week exit. I think the defining point in our season was the three games against Richmond, Port and Brisbane. After losing those three consecutively we showed where we are at this year and since then we've just been going through the motions. I'm optimistic about next year. Go Dogs.
Very mature post Scrag after a loss like that. I have an imprint of my slipper on my wall and a fist print in the toilet door. I can’t even think of posting an analysis. Angriest I’ve been after a game for a long while,

Is the window open or closed?
Disappointing if open
Good effort if closed

I believe it open which makes tonight disappointing

It’s a big off season for Bains. Has to replace the Mercedes sponsorship. He also has show leadership and challenge the senior coach on his unorthodox methods and potentially oversee some changes to the Football dept.

Bains is part of the old boys network who’s had a fairly charmed run. About to see if he can deliver.
A very, very insightful post. kudos!

We have to have one on the list before we can pick one to play, genius.

Bevo can't just select Todd Goldstein or Stef Martin.

I understand your schtick, and I like it.

But you know as well as I do that he has picked English the last two weeks yet he’s barely played in the ruck. Trengove is afl ready. How do we know if Sweet is any good if you don’t play him. Presumably Sweet is a better ruck than Dunkley?!

And outside of this can we recognise there is an injury risk in putting your best midfielders into a ****ing ruck contest against guys who are many centimetres taller and kgs heavier?

It’s a genuine embarrassment.

If I’m Dunkley or Macrae I’m going **** this and going to a club where the coaches ego doesn’t waste my supreme talent with bullshit strategies.

Bevo is cooked. He coached a very talented young team with some amazing vets in 2015 on the honeymoon rebound. Lost a final with shit goal kicking - thankfully we’ve fix that in the last 5 years. Oh wait.....

A middle of the road 2016 + a month where the stars aligned. I’ll be forever grateful but you cant perform 4 weeks out of 300 and keep a job.

Downhill since then. When we lose a star like Naughton or Macrae to this bullshit maybe the club will react.

What gets me is that we did see this happen...Last season. Took until our season was on knife's edge for him to make the sensible adjustments, then we rolled the rest of the season before having the shit beaten out of us by gws. But he/the coaches did make them. What I was most hopeful of this season was it not taking it to get to the position we're in now for the coaches to pull their heads in. I don't know if it makes it more or less frustrating but they showed the capacity to concede mistakes and adjust. And if I had to guess I think these last few games might feature similar adjustments.

Or maybe not and Bev is truly taking the piss out of this season and is just using it to get games into guys like Richards, English, Vanders etc. Which wouldn't be the easiest strategy to sell a victorian based team with some incredibly pent up and frustrated supporters.

The frustrating thing is if we just make a few tweaks like everyone has been saying we would be right in this year. But the same problems continue to cost us.

Terrible presser saying we are young and won't win the hit outs. We have options you wont try.

Not blaming any player for this loss. Can't blame JJ that was only one shot at goal, it happens. Can't blame Bruce when both Naughton and English are in his space. Can't blame gardner, can't blame English for having no help, can't blame Dunkley for having no impact coz he is rucking etc etc.

Crozier is just unbelievable, needs to be VC
