Lachie isn't a full-on A grader but he is one of our top small forwards. He was our second leading goal kicker this season as well. Glad Hawthorn couldn't lure him back. As much as we talk about Vic players wanting to go home, we also need to acknowledge when they stay.

Good to see him staying around. As you say, one of our best small forwards.
looking at sides like port Adelaide however, with Rozee, butters, gray, fantasia and Motlop in their small forward fleet, just tells you how far away we are from having a genuine premier ship forward line.

When did they win a premiership?

O'Brien's is the best since Liam Jurrah's but there is not a chance in hell Jack won't win.
Great, great year for marks.

When did they win a premiership?
Well they didn’t yet but that makes my point even more strongly.
Would Sam switkowski get on the port Adelaide team? No.
Would Lachie Schultz make their 22? No.
Would Trav Colyer make their team? No.
Would Mitch Crowden make it? No.
Would Liam Henry? No.
Michael Walters ahead of Stephen Motlop is probably the only one, and let’s be honest, after sonnys 2021 season, even that’s a bit doubtful.
Haven’t mentioned Sturt but 4 games in three seasons is a big concern.
All of the players above are currently best 22 at Fremantle.
we need more forwards, not just talls, but mediums and smalls too. Encouraging to hear garlick say that is what we are targeting at the draft.
so Amiss, JVR, Rachele, Jesse Motlop, Benning - come on down all.
Also for what it’s worth - I think port will be premiers in 3 weeks time as they have the best set of forward remaining in the comp.

A mosquito fleet does not a cup make. I think your point is in the completely wrong direction tbh. We’re not that far off it. Shultz could definitely be part of a premiership team.

I think we have done a lot right in terms of building a flag winning side. But the forward 6 is clearly the area of the ground with the lowest depth of talent relative to midfield and defence.
To win a flag I think we need 120 odd goals across the season from a core batch of 3 to 4 small/medium forwards. In addition to out tall forwards kicking bags.
yeah sure - Schultz could be one of those smalls in a prospective premiership side.
I just don’t think we have enough in that department however and that’s why someone like Rachele is such an attractive option for us in the draft.

You should be comparing Butters, Rozee etc to Brayshaw, Young, Serong etc. We had to use our high picks on mids and then throw them into the coalface from day 1 (Young was best available player at his pick and we would have been mad to not take him even though we have plenty of defenders). Henry we got screwed by Carlton but we did the righty by him and now we have to expect he will take time to develop. He’s not a top 10 pick in anything but name.

Port had the luxury of injecting quality youth into an already competitive team. They can shine up forward. As for the others Gray is pretty much Walters and Motlop is pretty meh.
We will get their luxury in the next few drafts as we have a solid defence, a good young midfield and the next big thing in footy as our ruckman. Now we can use some high draft picks on forwards and I fully expect this to be exactly the plan JL had from day 1 to build this list.

If Poppy can win 3 premierships, Schultz or Switta can easily win one.

When you isolate individual players like that, it's easy to say they're not of a certain quality required to win a premiership. It's about the collective, with one or two more talented forwards our forward line can afford to carry a few smalls who play a role.

It's amazing how average players like Motlop are suddenly premiership quality once the rest of the team improves, happens every year "player x wouldn't be in the 22 of a premiership side" forgetting guys like Jason Castagna has won three flags.

Schultz and Switta are better than Castagna and it isn’t close.

Can Shultz improve his pace at AFL level? It's the one thing that separates him from Papley levels IMO. That and depth on his kicking.

Any interest in Ben Ronke. I know we were interested a few years ago. Kinda disappeared for a while but plays the Papley role.

Recruit vics out of spite now

If we recruit Vic Country kids history shows we’ll probably prove him wrong too.

In all seriousness our record of retaining Vic Country and South Australian players is better than West Australian players. Pretty sure we’ve lost Neale, who didn’t even go home, and that’s it in close to 20 years.

We lost a Tasmanian home to Gold Coast.
