This would be 100% True. You could add Hardie to that source.

I get no feel that Darcy wants to leave and give up the no. 1 ruck spot he has.

Tucker though different matter. He did buy a house but only signed a two year contract in 2019.

Cerra I kind of agree - will see how the year pans out before making a decision. But I lean toward more reputable journalists like Ryan Daniels who says he has heard he is likely to re-sign for four years - just a matter of working out the finer details.
I wouldn't be surprised if any player from Freo would want a transfer to another club. Cannot blame them either

I had a listen to that podcast on sport fm from which that story about Sumich gobbing off about players leaving Fremantle comes from.

Something else in that interview about Chad Warner was interesting. Sumich said that Warner wasn't in consideration for the U18's WA squad until he was contacted by Warner's father - an ex-South Fremantle player who was a player on SF's playing list when Sumich was coaching there. According to Sumich, after the discussion with Warner's father he decided to give Chad Warner a go.

Troubles me that coincidences like that could be the basis of U18's selection.

Edit: I'll put the podcast link here if anyone wants to get the context of what he said.

If you aren't connected, from the right team, go to the right school or have the right last name, you'd better be ****ing good at football.

Listening to what Sumich said, there were two things that I wondered about

i) If Warner's dad didn't have a connection with Sumich and wasn't picked for state U18's would he have been identified later as a draft prospect?

ii) Is there a lot of players that get pushed up to be played in their preferred position because of good rapport with the selectors or because they've gone to a particular school at the expense of others who don't get the same opportunities.

I guess I could chime in with a few examples but I'm certainly no frontman on this issue. I would like to think Warner would have been drafted but it might have been the following year if he didn't make state 18's (or picked later in the draft), you just don't know.

Jono Griffin, for example, never played state 16's /18's nor made an East Freo combines squad in junior levels but would grow 8 inches and make the Colts team. He was obviously a raw talent and was picked up by Adelaide after his Colts season.
Harry Lumumba played in every combines squad for East Freo from 13 to 16 before moving to Claremont colts, he also played for WA in state 18's. No club was particularly interested in him and I think it was either his stepfather or someone from Claremont that got on the phone to Collingwood and asked to give him a tryout. He impressed them enough they took a punt on him in the same rookie draft as Griff.

Examples from years ago but two players whose pathways were quite different but would go on to play AFL. I'm sure it's a bit different now.

Anyone got the text for this?

Former Dockers forward Cam McCarthy has walked away from South Fremantle after just one game at WAFL level.

The 26-year-old signed a two-year deal with the reigning premiers in November after he sensationally quit the Dockers before the AFL season ended last year.

McCarthy has not attended a training session since he collected four disposals in the club’s opening round win over West Perth and was subsequently dropped from the team to play Claremont at Revo Fitness Stadium tomorrow.

In a statement to The West Australian, South Fremantle said McCarthy had not made contact with the club since the end of round one.

“As always, the club’s main concern is with Cam’s health and we will continue to assist in this area,” the club said.

Geez that is sad. I was looking forward to see him run around this year.
Stay safe Cam

Talent identification eyes are usually fixed in the pathway that most of the talent comes out of and they start in that pathway early. It would surprise nobody if there are 16 year olds in the representative teams that aren't as good as 16 year olds who missed out because their name wasn't listed in the 15s or 14s previously.
I'd imagine part of the nomination process comes from their clubs as well? Plus you've got the WAFL academy programs as another layer. This is an area that's absolutely ripe for improving.

Chad has proven his old man right though.

There's nothing wrong with Sumich listening to someone whose views he trusted. The idea that we can, with our current development pathways, unfailingly find all of the best footballing talent in WA and squeeze them into just one state team is weird and wrong.

I wanted us to pick up both Elijah Taylor and Chad Warner. I got Elijah wrong but Warner is exactly my kind of footballer.
Good points.

Tho it fundamentally appears cause for concern with regards to underage selection ,considering chads impact at AFL Level I think the bigger concern should be the state talent identification teams criteria for actually selecting players

On another note If only our arrogant vic - centric list management team at the time would of done similar when Jeremy and mitch McGovern’s dad pleaded with them (backed up by schammer and hazelby ) to give his sons a serious look/consideration all those years ago..

I can't recall which thread we were discussing the scurge of gambling being thrust in our faces at every turn?? But whilst checking the AFL app just now for the weekend fixtures I noticed this very "subtle" change.... Screenshot_2021-04-09-13-32-40-16.jpg

Its pretty hard to look at the McGovern boys when all your focus is on private school footy in Melbourne's leafy suburbs

Here’s a pointless article on the club website.
This is like the bank increasing my daily spend limit to $1 million.
