We have 8 players over 30yrs old this season. 7 of them played yesterday, that's 32% of the squad. The 8th (Ballas) would have played if he wasn't injured.

Dawson - Had a decent game. He's keeping the seat warm until A Pearce gets back..... but could Collins have had a decent game.

D Pearce - Had a decent game, nothing special.

Griffin - Below average... but if he hadn't missed we'd be saying he was good. In reality just warming the seat until Apeness is back.

Mundy - Still performing at a high level.

Sandilands - Had a good game, ineffective when moved forward but delivery, forward structures were crap.

Spurr - Had a decent game, nothing special.

Johnson - Worst on ground.

What's going on with Johnson, he's a shadow of him former self. Ya can't say game time he's played 4 games already.

MJ hasn't been the same since he had his back operated on in 2014, then did the hammy majorly in Rd 9, 2015 and last year had the back, knee and I think hammy operated on. He is slower, I'd consider throwing him fwd for a few weeks, let his last season have some enjoyment.

Or he goes out playing in Peel, he definitely looks a shadow of his former self.

Don't mind MJ forward at all much better than Tab . can always swing back if he is needed.

At the game I was thinking we looked like a side with plenty of improvement in it. We were rubbish crumbling in our forward half, really missed Ballas putting the defence under pressure.

We were also average at getting quality clearances, Geelong seemed to have less but found free players more regularly and quickly.

I think it will take 5 or 6 weeks by which time our season will be shot, but I think we will be a better team at the end of the year than the beginning.

Couldn't agree more mate.
I was there too. It was hard to watch. Geelong were kissed on the dick the whole first half from the umpires. They also seemed to get so much luck. They had kicked like 1 behind in the first half. Really felt like the ball just bounced their way in every 50/50 situation. Our boys were generally sloppy and lazy. I have no idea why. The skills were horrendous minus a handful of guys. Stephen Hill was BOG by far for us I thought. BHill was really good too. Ditto Fyfe, Mundy, Ibbo and Walters. Pretty much everyone else was ordinary-poor.
I see a lot of upside aswell. We know Johnson and a lot of the rest of the boys are capable of far better.
Our renowned pressure was non existent last night and we gave them far too much space. That was my biggest concern.

Oh and Kersten can catch the plane back to Geelong with his old team for all I care. He's shit

After seeing out a bit of time after the game I think I'll post something a bit longer.

Defence is an issue. Dawson can warm A.Pearce's spot for now. I've got no problem with that. I'm all for trying to get Johnson back to his best but this is his last year and after he's gone we should go with two genuine talls and Logue or Ibbo if we want to develop Logue elsewhere. Anyone who thinks we'll get enough rebound with Collins, Hamling and AP is the side is kidding themselves. I still think Spurr and Ibbo offer enough for now. Spurr was one of our best yesterday and Ibbo was alright IMO but if Ibbo can get us a decent compensation pick I'd be all for letting him go. Hopefully we can develop someone to replace Spurr when the time is right. I'm not sure Weller is the right fit for defence but give him time. We need to get 8+ games into Logue, Ryan and Hughes this year to see what they've got.

Midfield with the obvious downfall of the ruck looks ok going forward but I'd like to see Balic given a go sooner rather than later. Missing the boat a bit playing Suban in that forward role when it could be Balic. Is it his spot - no it isn't but we need to get games into him. Replacing Mundy and D.Pearce down the track shouldn't really be as hard as some of the other things we need to do. Hill x2, Fyfe, Neale, Blakely and Langdon is ok. Add Bennell, Balic and probably a high draft pick or two and it'll be alright. Walters should be moved up to half forward IMO to help with delivery. Darcy needs games but I can't help thinking we'll have a 2-3 year gap with spud and/or traded ruckmen before he's consistently at the level we need him.

The forward line also needs a bit of work. McCarthy looked OK yesterday when it went near him. I liked it when he got involved further up the ground as well. Bennell coming in will help a lot whether he plays forward or midfield. Can be a 40 goal a year HFF if we choose to play him there. As people have rightly pointed out we probably need another KPF (Kersten is hopeless, Taberner slightly better), ruck/forward and small forward. Darcy has to play ruck/forward at some point this year IMO. Won't be his role but needs to get games somehow. Hopefully one of Apeness (play him second ruck if fit) or Strnadica come good. Small forward wise we probably need to draft one or two this draft. I'd keep Ballantyne around to help them out for a year or so. Should be going for the KPF if we can first round this year IMO.

Anyway long way to go here. It'll take 2-3 years to get the majority of players we'll need through this rebuild. It'll take longer to develop them up to a decent level. That's not to say re-enforcements won't be needed later through free agency, trades and draft picks but draft picks should be our focus. Trades should only be done on the cheap and free agency only if we don't lose anyone ourselves.

We were the third most experienced and oldest team of round 1, after West Coast and Hawthorn.

It doesn't look much like a rebuild. It only looks like one in terms of performance.

I'm legitimately angry after reading that, I had no idea our age profile was that bad.

So we aren't rebuilding we are just shithouse.

Nobody has said anything about a flag, but you can't after 1 game say the team is going nowhere. It is all well and good saying get rid of the 30 year olds but by taking that experience out of the team the younger guys have nobody to learn from and that could be even more detrimental to their development than if they are playing WAFL. Not to mention you run the risk of multiple 100+ point losses which would not be good for their confidence.
(Actually I was saying it before 1 game).

This team is going somewhere...backwards.

Since the start of last season

We are 4-19.

Only one of those losses has been by less than 17 pts (14 have been by 31+ pts, 8 by 41+ pts).

We have scored 90+ pts 4 times and conceded 90+ pts 14 times.

At Subiaco

Overall record: 147-107.

Losses by 40+ pts: 34 (13.4% of all games played).

We have lost 4 of our last 5 games at Subi by 40+ pts (80%).

Rd 19, 2016: 90 pts, rd 20: 46 pts, rd 21: 72 pts and rd 1, 2017: 42 points.

Since the start of last season at Subiaco

We are 3-10.

Losses by: 26,33,4,18,38,17,90,46,72 and 42 pts (average 38.6 pts).

Last 10 games anywhere

We are 1-9.

Losses by: 48,32,17,24,90,46,72,92 and 42 pts (average 51.4 pts).

This is not ideal.

Keep fiddling Nero. I'm sure the fire will go out eventually.

Those are some very challenging observations youmewe.

We would really want to start turning those results around sooner rather than later. Intellectually I can accept that it will take some time for the guys who have been out for a while to get back to their best, and with the new guy coming in it will take time to build chemistry. But on an emotional level I am still boiling inside about that performance yesterday - lucky it is only a game ;)

What!

I'd say the only thing Geelong would be upset at last night was how crap Taylor was up forward. Slow, lumbering, lacking agility, turning circle worse than Jack hannath, etc.

Johnson would be the same, he just doesn't have the agility, strength, jump or speed to be a forward. And not to mention his shot on goal.

Please don't suggest Brady in OK DD, you know I like my peel match.:p How he give effort .playing for freo is like having a losing mentality.

Barely played more than half a dozen games in nearly 2 years - in a month he'll be our best defender again; can guarantee it.

And then he'll break down and we'll be back to square one...

I was at the game yesterday and Johno was beyond bad, however he's one of the few that turns it around after a few games in succession. There are some other culprits who aren't as capable though. MJ will be better for the run.

And then injured and back to square one , with all the chemistry build gone together as well.

It's 4 years after we kicked ourselves out of a flag and we've literally made 0 progression on accuracy in front of the sticks, or kicking in general.

If 4 years isn't enough for Ross to sort out THE most glaring flaw to our game, then what makes people think he'll get it fixed in another 4?

He's great in a press conference old Rosco, but it's starting to look like he's all piss and wind.

Geelong scored 64 of their points due to our turnovers, the same issue as last year. We will not win many games if we cannot reduce dramatically the number of times we give it to the opposition.

I wonder how many choked up backlines and unforced turnovers it'll take this year before the jungle drums start rumbling for Ross. He'll take a bit of heat this season if we see too many performances like that, I have no doubt.

If it's the same old cattle on the park, yes. Fans and media will wear it more if the rebuild starts and the kids are played.
