Just thought this might be fun/interesting/informative. Clue's in the thread title, recommend a song/band/artist for others to listen to. Descriptions would be nice. :)

The Smiths. My favourite band of all time who came out of Manchester. Released their debut album in 1984 (The Smiths) and their last in 1987 (Strangeways, Here We Come) and the music in between was nothing short of sensational. The lead singer Morrissey has enjoyed success as a solo artist ever since.

And a new band I have just recently gotten into, The Jam. A British punk rock band from the last 70's & 80's. Their lead singer Paul Weller has also made a successful solo career for himself.

Relationship of Command by At the Drive-in--- An absolute masterpiece, deep, powerful and down right ballsy! A Post-punk hardcore outfit out of the U.S that broke up before its time. The track One Armed Scissor always gets me pumped while Enfliade is a much more mellow number. Relationship of Command was their last album and definitely their best in terms of the sound they had going, though their earlier stuff rocks too. If they hadn't fallen apart they'd be one of the biggest bands in the world right now imo. The band split in 2002 and its members went on to form the Mars Volta and Sparta respectively... two more awesome bands btw!! Though I prefer the Mars Volta... Deloused in the Comatorium, which was their first LP, is another great album.

Lem... Lem I'm sorry, but I had to right? Lem you know I'm sorry.. I am so sorry man... oh God--- Shane Vendrell

Broken Social Scene- a 12 member indie supergroup from Canada, who play just about any instrument imaginable. Their albums are interesting, but still accessible, and don't fizzle into the indie wanc that many others do. One of the most concentrated groups of talent in the world.

Rush. The Greatest Musical export from Canada. Geddy Lee. Alex Lifeson. Neil Peart. Great Albums. Great Guitar Rifts. Great Drum Solos. Great Ballads. Cool intros. I can talk until I am blue, but I am sure that are plenty of Aussie Rush fans who are longing for Geddy, Alex and Neil to FINALLY Play OZ Next year!!!

Want further proof? Log on to www.rushradio.org and after 3 or 4 tunes, you will be hooked to the sound.

Have you heard of the band Coheed and Cambria? They are sort of like a modern day Rush. I would recommend them too.

Oh man, C&C might be the worst band on the planet at the moment, I think. I was recommended them, friend of a friend called them "a cross between punk and Led Zeppelin", or something, but it was so bad. Kind of like a cross between Emo and something just as bad. C&C are NOT a modern day Rush! If you wanted a modern day Rush then maybe, I don't know, Tool?

I'll be the second to recommend Mars Volta, great band, truly innovative, breaking new ground, metal, funk, ambience, everything mixed together basically. Both their albums are great, the 2nd one is better but the first one is probably easier for a newcomer to listen to. The band is much better than At The Drive In, ATDI is post-punk but MV is like, post-post-punk (to use a ridiculous anaology).

Opeth - Windowpane.

Glorious clean/acoustic droning-chord driven song, largely involving aspects of jazz with truckloads of melody. The second solo (4:36) oozes emotion and always sends a shiver down my spine.

Who else!? I've liked Dream Theatre for a while, mainly their album Images & Words. I've heard Opeth are pretty good as well, kind of progressive.

I don't think you quite get them. They aren't emo because all their albums tell a continuous story (which is sci-fi), and the music isn't remotely close to emo. They have some of the best guitar work in recent prog-rock music, and their vocalist's vocal range is remarkable (hence the comparison with Rush).

You need to "get" the story underneath to really understand and appreciate them.

Haha, sorry man. I have dial-up so if I were to upload it somewhere it would take way to long. :o

But yeah, they are essentially progressive death metal. Song lengths average about nine minutes or so. They created a one-off soft album titled Damnation, Windowpane being the first track. Eight albums overall since the band established in 1990, their first coming out around 1994/95, I believe. Their latest effort was 2005's Ghost Reveries.

They are like musics Dungeons and Dragons equivalent. Plus the singer has a whiney annoying voice.

A few people have mentioned ATDI, they might enjoy Bear vs. Shark also. They are pretty much an Indie/Punk/Post-hardcore band, I found this from a review and it sums them up pretty well 'a cup of At The Drive-in, a cup of Braid, stir in some Cap'n Jazz, add a slight dash of Rage Against The Machine and As Friends Rust'. Only released two albums and broke up a few months back.

Some of the strangest music I've ever heard. It'd probably appeal to fans of Mr Bungle, but it's far more out there. Really good though.

Disagree with your opinion on C&C, but oh well.

Bear vs. Shark are (were) an awesome band, and I was very disappointed to see that they had broken up. Best of Hands was a great album.

Regarding ATDI, did anyone else feel slightly let down by the best of? There are heaps of incredible tracks on it, but I feel that I'd rather listen to Relationship of Command instead. Might just be that some of my favourites from RoC were omitted (how could you not have Invalid Litter Dept on their best of!?), but I was ecstatic that they included Picket Fence Cartel, which I think is one of their best songs.

Yeah I felt the same way... I still enjoyed This is Station is Non-operational but I felt it was missing something too... the dvd component only had 2 clips on it as well which I thought was a bit disappointing... but oh well, the b-sides I hadn't heard all rocked so it wasn't a total disappointment...
I haven't heard Bear vs Sharks so I'll be sure to check them out!!
Cheers,
Brad

He was the lead singer in Style Council as well. Have got a few of his solos and quite like him - pretty easy to listen to :thumbsu:

I will check them out. I like Weller's music and like you said, is very easy to listen to.

Another band is Ebba Grön, a Swedish punk band from the 70's. Their first album We're Only in It for the Drugs, is a must. A great band, a great sound.

Don't expect them to be similiar. The Jam s***s on The Style Council from a very great height. If you are checking out individual LPs by The Jam make sure you check out "Setting Sons". It is a masterpiece.
For the record The Jam were Mods not Punks!:D

Yeah, I read in another thread someone's thoughts about Style Council and that they didn't really rate them, and I did a little bit of research on them too. I'll keep a look out for Setting Sons. :thumbsu:

Ok, I'll remember for next time. :p

I must recommend Stone Sour. One song in particular, Bother. It has had me hooked for months and it when people hear it they are quite often shocked that it is Corey Taylor (Slipknot Lead singer).
