He just seemed like one of those weirdos that could probably only happen in Britain anyway.
You're probably right there. A lot of people said in the doco they always thought he was a weirdo, but they just accepted it as his schtick and went along with it for fun. The only person I can compare him to is possibly Bill Cosby (though Cosby was not a pedo) with his public persona a huge coverup for the many rapes Cosby committed that went back to the 60s. But Savile has to go down in history as the worst pedo that's ever lived.

I've been digging through reddit. Looking at reactions from when he died. Some shocking stuff there.

Watching the new Jimmy Savile docuseries, I really have no idea how this guy was ever as popular as he was in the UK. Maybe you had to be there to see whatever they saw in him. I guess his charity work helped create an opinion that he was a benign fellow. Four hundred victims came forward after he died, which means the actual total could be 800-1000 ppl he molested and r*ped over his lifetime. Savile was obviously protected by his upper-class mates many times. It looks like the cops even covered up his crimes at times too. The whole thing is just farked up.
Completely agree.

I would assume for him to be such a big star, he must have had some kind of charisma or something. But there is just nothing there. Like the old clips of his jokes, they are just awful.

Not too mention, he was one of the ugliest looking people I have ever seen on TV.

I'm only 20 mins in so I don't know if this is coming up or not, but Johnny Rotten called him out in the 70s as a predator.

Savile made a good move early on. He got in with the local police in Yorkshire, hosted all these bent coppers, soon, he had the Establishment on his side, politicians, the Royal family, the BBC, etc. Even while everyone at Leeds General Infirmiary knew what was up to, and nursing staff had repeatedly reported this, he was untouchable.

When you spend Christmas with Margaret Thatcher on multiple occasions he was always going to have a lot of protection from people in high places.

S2 of "Top Boy" as good as S1 - brilliant. "Love/Hate" quality of Euro gangster series. (Don't forget there's also two previous seasons from a decade ago)

Edit: Just finished S2. Wow, insanely good TV. I know shows too often (and unworthily) get compared to "The Wire", but this one is right up there. Probably lacks that unique humour that McNulty, Bunk, Rawls brought to that series, but on just about every other level Top Boy is comparable to the streetwise grittiness of The Wire. London replaces Baltimore as the setting, and you'll probably still need your subtitles on, but Jaq, Dushane, Sully etc are better than adequate versions of Stringer, Barksdale, Bubbles and co. Any further parallels would be unfair on both shows. Hopefully Drake is busy at work producing S3 already.

That Jimmy Saville docu is stomach turning stuff. Even back then, many people in the industry knew that he was an abuser of children/under age girls, but because he raised millions for charity/hospitals etc, they turned a blind eye.
Disgusting

Halfway through Russian Doll... not sure how I missed this the first time round, maybe it's the title, which really doesn't give much away about the premise at all, but this is great. And with each episode less than half an hour, it's breezy and easy to binge.

Finished Pieces of Her... this aims to be prestige drama, has Toni Colette and David Wenham in it, who are both great actors, but it ends up being rather melodramatic tosh. Which is a shame, because I've read all the books of Karin Slaughter, the author of Pieces of Her on which it's based. She's a fantastic writer, but I said at the time to my wife that it was her weakest book and clearly her attempt to write a Hollywood-esque thriller. Even then, the book was readable because Slaughter has a way of writing damaged, tortured women and their complicated relationships really well. This show gets all the 'action' but none of the internal struggle.

Also, the chief villain was horribly miscast. In the book, he's supposed to be charismatic, cult-like. Instead, they got an uglier Christian Bale who looks like he belongs in bold and the Beautiful. It's watchable but a bit trashy.

It started well then I lost interest.

I actually thought overall it was a pretty weak documentary. Really just left a bunch of unanswered questions.

I felt it still tried to promote the agenda that the British establishment knew nothing about Jimmy's pedophilia until after he died, which is utter bollocks. The cops covered up his crimes and even child services told victims to drop it. Girls said things while at the BBC and were told to get over it, it's just how Jimmy is. He settled five court cases out of court. People were talking about it during those years. The establishment knew about it and turned a blind eye because of Jimmy's charity work, and some of them were involved in a pedo ring. The hospital staff at those institutions Jimmy stalked knew what he was doing. There are a few good podcasts about the whole thing that give you more warts and all discussion on it.

Yeah, but I still feel like there are more unanswered questions than simply a conspiracy where everyone turns a blind eye to a total monster because of charity work.

I got to the end (it was too long) and just thought ... okay, I don't really understand why that was allowed to go on for so long.

If you are a 25 year old nerd who shows up at a blackjack table and starts card counting, the pit boss will spot you in about 10 minutes. But one of the most famous people in England was able to look like a pedophile, talk like a pedophile, act like a pedophile, and be a pedophile for 40 years. And not one single person with any power said I am going to going to try to stop it.

There was some reference to a delay in giving him a knighthood. I think the Queen has always been pretty sharp. Maybe she realised he was a total creep.

I'm just drawing these conclusions myself as the documentary didn't offer anything of substance.

Either way, I thought the it was pretty weak. And if anyone hasn't watched it, they could just watch a few creepy videos of Saville online and save themselves 3 hours.

There's a claim that Jimmy was involved in pedo ring that included politicians, other celebrities, and allegedly some in the royal family itself. We know that the huge investigation carried out by the police snared a number of UK celebrities, including Rolf Harris, after Jimmy's death. He had people in power protecting him because Jimmy supplied them with victims. Yuck. This is grimy shit.

The Jimmy Saville doco was painful to watch. Disgusting to think how much was covered up due to who he was.

Completely different point but I also hate how he thought if he did all that charity work it would excuse all his evil when he died. Prick.

Just finished Superstore.

The finale was perfect. I will miss the show, real heart in it and most of the supporting characters had plenty of funny bits and by the end the show found the perfect dynamics between all of them.

It's funny, cos when Superstore first came on Netflix I posted about how good I thought it was and got shitcanned by regular posters for it. But this series is one of my all-time favs. The characters in it are so good.
