Rules The new man on the mark rule is utterly ridiculous.

I don't mind it but I wish the umps would say "Hold" rather than "Stand". It sounds stupid.

They should not say anything, in Auskick umpires can say stand but at the elite level players should not need or get any instructions from umpires. It’s why I call it the Auskick Football league

I agree. Umps only need to be heard when they’re making a decision. If one team knows the rules (or knows how to exploit the rules) and the other doesn’t then that should be their advantage. It shouldn’t be nullified by an umpire telling them to stand or move it on.

Nonsense. Richmond are putrid to watch.

They are the worst offenders when it comes to clogging up the game and slowing it up.

It becomes a skillless mess. Fortunately for them and the general public, they have Dusty and Edwards to add some polish and interest.

That’s absolute rubbish.

But aren't they allowed to move, until the umpire says "Stand"?

I don’t mind it. I was filthy with it at the start when it was announced but I’m eating humble pie on it. As long as umps call play on the very moment the player with the ball takes a side step then I’m ok with it. It’s currently allowing players to wheel and go without pressure - not sure it was designed for that but it works. Still can’t get my head around how umps can watch two players but hey so far so good.

Were there any shockers paid over the weekend? At the Dogs game last night I honestly didn't even remotely notice it, I don't think any 50m penalties were given. Players will adapt quickly and I'm sure we'll forget about it soon enough 'if' the umpires are reasonable and don't pay over the top ridiculous penalties, and save it for the very obvious ones.

From the bits I saw of games I reckon I saw one fifty and it was from a late hit

It is quite possible the rigid nature of the rule will result in less 50s

AFL360 counted 6 or 7 and replayed the whole lot yesterday for fans consideration. The 50m punishment definitely looks disproportionately heavy when laid side by side with the infraction of taking a single step backward or to the side.

But the net result of holding the man on the mark in place until such time the kicker begins his run or releases his handball is having a very positive effect on transitioning and flow and scoring.

This is a positive for me that clearly outweighs the negative of the poor look of the 50m penalty.

It also clearly brings to the fore disposal by foot which should lead to an increase in marking (but not hangers). And so the cycle continues. I think Damian Harfwick said their uncontested mark count against the Pies was the equivalent to two matches historically.

The 75 limit interchange is the big one and should see the harder running sides be able to find late momentum in quarters and in matches.

So, basically Richmond for another 3 premierships.

Robbo on 360 thought that one of the immediate effects will be the resumption of tagging on defensive quarterbacks like Short.

So here are some key stats per team comparing this years and last years first preseason round....

Obviously correlation is not causation, 9 games is not a massive sample size, and other changes (eg rotations or game styles) could have affected these indicators

...but all of these key indicators are pointing to more open and flowing play. Scores are up about 7 points per team as well as 2 inside 50s. Clearances, a proxy for stoppages, were down 19% and tackles were down 26%

You have to admit that the principals office does provide us a lot to react to.

It's more often bad comms than bad decisions though.

I think most of the changes to improve the space and flow of the game in the last 3 years have been good (i.e. the kick in rule changes, 6-6-6 and the "stand" rule). What they all have in common is they don't involve far more severe interventions like reducing the number of players on the field or zoning type changes (outside of the restart after a goal)

I get it, some people are more negative to change and more cynical about town hall than others. At the extreme end you have people like mr bagcroft who lose their mind and flicks the switch to ad hominem because somebody announces they have come round to an AFL rule change
