Rules The new man on the mark rule is utterly ridiculous.

The transition to netball/basketball is nearly complete. Ushered in by a bunch of sheep prepared to choke down on any rule change as long as the sponsors are kept happy. One particular sheep even seems comfortable with rule changes "not designed to keep the footy tragic happy". So you blow off your core market in a vain attempt to attract kids more interested in video than real, actual life. Some of these sheep won't be happy until all our kids weigh 150kgs before they're out of high school.

Well I have news for the world's most stupid animals, those that can't make decisions for themselves but simply eat what they're fed, these new consumers have no money. Things are tight. Millennials can't afford a house and memberships are bought by mum and dad, not buy snot nosed little johnny who's been brought up on a diet of fast food and US pretend sport.

Without the footy tragic$ the game will wither and die on the vine. But hey, that's ok, there's always fake online sport right ? Entertainment rules until they have a stroke because they need a crane to get out of bed. All before their 30th birthday.

I'm not one of those footy tragics that think the game was better 30 years ago. I love the game now. The professionalism, the athleticism (take note snot nose johnny), the tactics, the pressure, the arm wrestle. The best team wins. The losers live to fight another day unless their sook fans bleat about their team not being about to get the ball back out of their own 50.

Don't worry losers, Steve Hocking has you covered. We'll change the rules so EVERYONE gets a participation award. Lol

There's no need to CONSTANTLY tinker. NINE rule changes last year. Ok one or two related to Covid fair enough but every year there's more. And more. And more until the fabric of the game and then the game itself has changed.

If rule changes aren't at least contested, in the end Australian Rules football, based on simple principles becomes a lawyer's nest of quadruple appendixes and jargon the size of a phone book. On hang on, poor sheep wouldn't know what a phone book was. Without Google sheep can't comprehend. All sheep has is a lack of respect for history, tradition, passion and a lot of contempt for anything that came before the goog.

If I wanted non contested sh*t I can watch NBA or ten pin bowling. Leave my bloody game alone. If you don't like it, get your excercise for the day by grabbing the remote and switching over to Captain America. By the way, how's that going for you ? Do you want fries with that entertainment garbage ?

To the sheep I have only one thing left to say: Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
tldr

But seriously, the AFL have attempted a major, and much needed, intervention to the declining standard of the game using a number of minor rule changes. This is because the fans have refused to consider a few major changes.

The AFL, nor most fans, want a non-contested game. What we dont want is a contest that is so bogged down by numbers around the ball that it fails to resemble the game of autralian rules in any way.

My daughter is in grade 3, i could count on 1 hand the amount of times i have seen footies being kicked by the kids at pick up/drop off.. Its all about basketball.

There’s no tackling in basketball

Hence why it’s an approved playground activity

Back in my day in late 70s in primary school we’d have full scale matches at lunchtime on the oval with a duty teacher cheering us on from the sidelines ..sometimes even umpiring for us so there was no disputes

We would take our footy boots to school and hammer each other

It's a shame it was tldr for you. Exactly that attitude summed up everything I said. Baaaaaaaa

and the blame would lie at the feet of the moronic player who, despite understanding and obeying the rule for an entire season, forgot to do it under the most important circumstances
Or, more likely, the umpire, never having played the game and not appreciating the slightest nuances, adjudicates the rule to the letter of the law, not in the spirit of the game and under an impramatur from Shocking that nobody who understands and loves the game wants.

I hope they bring back the flick pass..

That would #### everyone up
I actually saw one on some youtube some time last year. It was a game between Footscray and Hawthorn in black and white. Maybe 1961 grand final. It was Ted Whitten that did it. I actually did not know the flick pass was even in that era. Thought it went out earlier than that.

ah yes, lets leave crucial umpiring decisions in the most important game of the season to the umpire's "vibe". That wont anger fans in any way

Nonsense. Richmond are putrid to watch.

They are the worst offenders when it comes to clogging up the game and slowing it up.

It becomes a skillless mess. Fortunately for them and the general public, they have Dusty and Edwards to add some polish and interest.
You call trying to move the ball to our goals as quickly as possible, and when we lose it, trying to get it back as quickly as possible, ‘slowing it up’?
Lol

We use to take over the basketball court on a wet winter day in high school and drill stab passes at each other trying to take someone’s head off from 20 mtrs away.

A wise move was never having your back to the other end.

The tall wire fences were great. Kept the balls from rolling away.

No one would use their new shiny ball on those days though. Concrete scuffing and all.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another rule at some stage down the track which ensures that the set shot line becomes stricter for the kicker. I hope so anyway, if we are going to ensure absolute perfection with how players can defend then it seems fair to ensure the team with the ball can't cut corners either.
Jezza, pretty sure the rule is DESIGNED to allow the kicker more freedom to cut corners by getting a head start on thee man on the mark. That EXACTLY what they're trying to do. As always tho, there are inintended consequences with un-thought-out rules that haven't been trialled. Tjer s dreamers here believing that it's opened up the play and dramatically increased scoring. A goal. That's how much scoring is up. As Dimma said, the biggest change to the game has been the reduced interchange at the same time as putting the quarters back to full length. Tiredness, if anything is what opened up SOME games in the practice matches.

Footscray won a flag in 1954 mastering it as a whole team tactic. An absolute disgrace.

They were doing it for years.

“John Schultz’s form and Brownlow Medal win were highlights of 1960, with Footscray improving only slightly from the previous season to finish tenth. Former player Bill Findlay was appointed Whitten’s assistant coach in 1961. A meteoric rise up the ladder (due in part to a game plan centred around the ‘flick pass’ and its promotion of fast, play-on football) saw Footscray defeat Geelong in the last round to make the finals. Victory over St Kilda in the first semi-final was followed by a win against Melbourne in the preliminary final, when rover Merv Hobbs took what some consider the ‘mark of the century’ over Melbourne’s Trevor Johnson. The grand final, between Footscray and Hawthorn, was the first time two of the teams admitted to the VFL in 1925 met to play for the premiership. Footscray, led by captain/coach Ted Whitten, took an 8 point lead into the main break, but the Bulldogs wilted in the heat and Hawthorn claimed their first VFL flag, in front of 108,000 people.”

Here is great demonstration of it..

And here’s a BF thread about it..

You can’t play on after the siren having a set shot

You have to run in a dead straight line

I’m sure this rule has been in place for 125 years

If a player is hemmed in on the boundary it has to be a drop punt

Can’t step out and snap
Technically not true for a couple of reasons:

1. They allow certain players to have a "natural arc", this has been confirmed in AFL guidance as being permitted; and
2. Youre allowed to come back of the mark to run up to the mark to snap, even if its after the siren. I.e you cant go over the mark towards the middle of the field but can go up to the line of the mark from the outer field. They introduced this rule last year but it wasn't used much.
