Forget the run into the finals. The next five weeks sees us take on five top eight aspirants (and yes, I'm including an injury depleted Adelaide in that list). Success here can really set us up for the end of the season.

While I know it's CRAZY TALK to pick results five weeks in advance, just for the hell of it I'm interested to hear other people's forecast of the period ahead. Who will we beat? Who will beat us? And why? Here's my take on it ...

Hawthorn (A) ... Both teams seem to be in a similar place. We've started well without setting the world on fire. We've both been hit by injuries and have players yet to recreate their best. Today, we sit fourth and fifth on the ladder. While we had a remarkable come-from-behind victory in the corresponding fixture last year, I'm tipping the hawks in a pretty close contest. It's at the MCG, and I suspect the Hawks will have a little more motivation ... revenge.

Fremantle (H) ... This is a really important game. It's the only time we play Freo this year, and it's our one chance to inflict some ladder damage on them. Despite being edged out by the Bombers and thumped by the Hawks, the Dockers have been ticking most of the boxes, although they might easily have dropped another game against the Tigers. At the SCG. No Pav or Sandilands (and hopefully no Ray Chamberlain). This is one we need to win. My money's on us.

Collingwood (A) ... Pies, MCG, Friday night - what a mouthwatering prospect. Cloke is on fire, although the team as a whole has been spluttering along in a very unCollingwood like fashion. They seem more susceptible than they have in the past, and I think the aura of invincibility the Pies enjoyed over us has disippated. We should really have beaten them twice last year. We should give them a good run this year. What a game. Swans by 15.

Essendon (H) ... All I can say is, thank God it's at the SCG. The Bombers seem like a team determined to prove the cynics and accusers wrong. With a healthy list, they're delivering on the potential that injury robbed them of last year. And sure, the giants gave them something to think about on the weekend. But it may just have been a case of Essendon putting their feet up. Time will tell. The Bombers look good, but I can't remember the last time we played them at the SCG. Hopefully that gets us across the line. Swans by a whisker.

Adelaide (A) ... First of two big games in Adelaide, seperated by the bye. At the start of the season, you'd have marked this down in red ink. But sadly for Crows fans, their team hasn't lived up to their expectations. And to make matters worse, their Tippett-less forward line has now lost Walker. Bigfooty subscribers will be under no illusion as to how much the Adelaide rabble hate our guts. Sadly for them, hate don't win football matches. Good guys by 15.

Over to you.

No disagreements here.

Agree with most, however think Essendon will get us, ditto Hawthorn. Freo are a danger side for sure, the SCG isn't much of a fortress to them. Adelaide we have to and will beat, ditto my black and white boys who are unsettled but then it's at the MCG. Expecting 3-2, happy with 4-1, disappointed with 2-3.

You must have a short memory. The last time we played them at the SCG was 2010, we won by 9 points. The previous year we played them at the SCG and lost by 6 goals. I reckon they'll fancy their chances.

Dunno why you think the ground makes any difference, it didn't with the Cats. I'd prefer this game was at the MCG.

Can't see us winning 4/5. The must wins are Fremantle and Adelaide then we just need to steal one from Hawthorn, Collingwood or Essendon. I would happily take 3/5 and run!

You're right. Our record at the MCG is amazing.

I'd be happy with 4/5. I don't see that 5 is out of the question.

Most likely drop out of the 5 would be Essendon I guess, but 4 weeks is a fair way away. Of course, the Hawks game will set the tone. If we lose that, then our next 4 games should be quite intensely contested in response.

We realistically could drop or win any or all of the next five, and it very much depends on how confident/cohesive the boys are feeling. I reckon we are very much pointing in the right direction, and this tough patch has come at the right time of the season for us. The Brisbane game worked Reid and Jetta into a bit of touch, thankfully(!), and a lot will depend on how they build from this point.

I have always felt that it basically comes down to where the boys heads are at that determines whether we win or lose, and I feel we are probably stronger mentally than previous years (hard to compare to last year, but we will have to see). I also believe that McVeigh's continued form and leadership has had, and will continue to have great bearing on what goes on - he's showing great composure and intensity. He's waving his arms less and basically leading through output on the field, which is where his true value as captain lies.

Exciting bunch of weeks ahead!

Wasn't one of the Essendon games at the SCG decided in the last few mins/seconds, where an Essendon player kicked it to the goal square while the ball was clearly out of bounds?

I distinctly remember staying back with most of the crowd to boooooooo the umpires as they came off the field. Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it :)

Hawthorn- I dont know why but i am confident, normally not v hawthorn feel like growing up they always killed us so i am always cautious, but i think we match up well and right now i buy into the idea this side of ours is building nicely and we are ready for a big test.

Fremantle- easiest of the games (and its still hard) but we have to win this one and i expect us to win this one, would disapoint me the most to lose this

Collingwood- worries me the most, but good news i will be there and ive never seen a loss in melbourne. But seriously i hate playing collingwood, id almost pencil this in as a loss, i think we need to win this one or the hawks game for the whole mcg crap. AHh bugger it we will win we are over the hoodoo.

essendon- trust me we got this, they are going to slide they arent that good

Adelaide- we will win

5-0

worse case 4-1

Never really minded Essendon. This game changed all that.

I was actually seated in a corporate box and behind us, guests of another company, there sat three of the most obnoxious supporters ever to attend a match. They went out of their way to talk on the top of their voices, putting the boot into Sydney and our players - not in a fun way either. In a cruel, childish and offensive way. They didn't shut up for the whole match. Ruined the night for everyone within earshot. I seriously have never wanted to punch people as much in my life.

In the closing seconds of the game we had a shot at goal which bounced towards goals at the Randwick end. Unbeknownst to the crowd around us we thought it went through and went bizerk. I turned around and told those a@#$-wipes to get &^%ed. Then we found out it hit the post. Horrible.

Funny isn't it? With the tens of thousands that attend football matches every week, I'm sure every club has rogue supporters somewhere out there. It's just rare that they sit right behind you. I have hated Essendon with a passion every since.

I never felt so screwed over after a game as I was that night (Except for Razer Ray in 2011. That was the worst I've ever seen).

"The umpires pets" indeed!

Even if they do beat us, I wouldn't care. The Preliminary Final win was enough to wipe out all those losses against them.

ah it was at 23 mins, not as bad as I remember then.

Having thousands of irate fans booo and abuse the umpires as they trudged off is one of my fondest AFL memories, one of the times I felt like a part of something bigger. Ironic that this memory pops up just in time for umpire appreciation round :P

Why not say all wins? Care to give reasons? Im guessing you are just guessing.
There's no doubt about it Hawks are playing the better football and with no LRT or AJ I think there forward line will stretch our backs gunston buddy roughhead all over 192cm buddy's the 1 im scared about 2 weeks no goals he is gonna have a big 1 sooner than later hope its not this weekend
