Almost gave a shit about the Norf match enough to check the scores.
Almost.
Single most worrying thing for them, is they've had a great injury run & went into that game full strength - and as he has been since mid year, their best player was that little young bloke Brent Harvey.
Not a threat.

Swallow was the only player in the top 15 on the ground for Norf. Ziebell may have gotten into 15th if lucky

Just underlines how big a gap there is between the good sides & "the rest of us". (North, Saints, Carlton, whoever)

For Essendon to improve, we need to get a fair bit better in a few areas, and we need to win our way into finals the hard way.
Flopping in as others fall over, getting in with multiple wins over shit sides, etc etc doesn't really end up helping you in the long run.

We weren't good enough, tight enough, or strong enough this year, but I'm kind of glad we had the big tests of Hawks/Cats/Pies/Crows towards the end of the year - even though we failed them. You need to believe you can beat those sorts of sides, before you can win finals.

Only if Hawthorn don't win the flag.

If they do, we just ended up where everyone expected.
It'd be hilarious to see Freo or Adelaide beat them in a fortnight, wouldn't it? All of my Hawks supporting mates are so arrogant (not without reason)....

It really is Hawthorn's to lose.

They're a standard above everybody, save for perhaps Sydney when they're "on" in their Sydney sort of way.

I was thinking though, I'm not sure if Hawthorn have improved that much on 2011.

Sure, they've been more comprehensive in their wins, generally, but it does help that the two best sides of 2011 have dropped away a fair bit.

They've basically been allowed to do as they please, and when they haven't been given that leniency, they've only won 2 (Sydney II, West Coast II), and lost 5 (Geelong I, Geelong II, Sydney I , Richmond, West Coast I).

I realise this is bordering on the "if Essendon lose: they're crap; if Essendon win: the opposition let them" nonsense, maybe, but I can't help but think if Hawthorn of 2012 were forced to contend with Geelong of 2011, and to a lesser extent Collingwood of 2011, they wouldn't be the apparent certainties that they are.

The news about the Port Adelaide player: just horrible. It'll cast a pall over everything from here on in, as it should.

I feel terrible just thinking about it - can't imagine how I'd feel if it were one of ours.

Haven't been able to contact the family yet?
****, this'd be a rough way to find out.
Agreed... There'd be nothing worse than finding this out over online "news" sources...

Even if the family were not on social media, it would be only a matter of time before a friend called them asking about the news. There is never an idea way to find out something like this, but I could think of a lot better ways to hear it.

From the sounds of it, Port have been pretty quick and have done pretty well in getting to the family as quick as possible. Having their GM get on a plane as quick as he did to fly to Vegas is also a quality move. Well played, Port.

Shiiiit. I'm only 3 years younger, making me have mortality insecurities right now...
I'm almost 21... And I'm tempted to go bungee jumping and sky diving. Mortality insecurities all round.

20 next week. having the standard mortality freak I do when anyone my age or that I know to dies.
Shocking news, the Essendon boys should cancel their trip. Don't see how they could enjoy it now

Most of them took off about an hour before the news broke actually... Dell'Olio uploaded a picture of his seat on his Instagram.
