The Non-Essendon Thread V

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I'll say this for the umpteenth time:

Us/we, Essendon posters on BigFooty, do not reflect the Essendon Football Club.

Them, North posters on BigFooty, do not reflect the North Melbourne Football Club.

So when they openly troll us, and we bite back and/or find it hilarious when the club they support suffers, that is what it is.

It does not, and I repeat, does not, reflect anything whatsoever related to either club, and whether or not there is a sense of rivalry.

Whilst away from BigFooty, I don't mind North Melbourne. I don't like that they're a bit of a dampener on an elite competition (likewise Melbourne, St Kilda, Footscray and Richmond), and I wish they got their shit together, but beyond that, they're fine by me.

However, when I logged on to BigFooty on Monday, I did take great pleasure in seeing the cretins that have annoyed us for so long, squirm in the aftermath of their side being absolutely embarrassed, and now their best player suspended for some pretty weak stuff.

To the NMFC, I don't feel any particular way.
To their supporters that I come across in everyday life, like supporters of any club, I'm very polite and respectful to when discussing football (even Carlton supporters).
To their supporters that I come across on BigFooty, they've gotten everything that they deserve.

Such baloney Kong.

You know that all great fooball rivalries begin in the 1920s on the internets.

Platinum Footy@PlatinumFooty
The @AFL has signed off on @sydneyswans and @stkildafc to play in New Zealand in 2013.

And so it begins.

Warm moonlight over my horizon...

I think a rivalry between the two teams exists outside the confines of bigfooty.

Am i the only one?

James Brayshaw would certainly have you believe so. Every time I hear him on radio or television in the lead up to a match between Essendon and North, he always make special point of mentioning how the teams hate each other.

Apart from Lloyd, though, I've never really heard someone from Essendon say it. And even his comment was probably based on the late 90s situation- when the clubs were genuine on-field rivalries because they were both 'up' and should, by all rights, have played off in at least one grand final.

Aside from all that, the North supporters I have met in real life have never expressed any special dislike of Essendon. In fact, thinking about it, most of the North supporters I know personally are identical to a good number of Essendon supporters in that they dislike Carlton and Hawthorn more than any other teams.

Brayshaw wants to build a rivalry to make the game more relevant. Even if teams once hated each other, prolonged periods of a club without success can water that down. I am sure that if North and Essendon were top 4 teams for a while it would generate 'hate' without it needing to be sold by Brayshaw.

Phone, was it you that made a comment about Maxwell and his bump more than 5 metres off the ball?

Reading Maxwell's comments about it, he stated that he does that plenty of times a game: blocking a forward from running into the fity.

I also heard Buckley say that his players do it approximately 100 times a game.

Don't the rules state you need to be within 5 metres of play to block somebody?
Yes, yes they do. But hey, who reads the rules?

Yeeep.

If it wasn't for BigFooty, I wouldn't give two ****s about the North Melbourne football club. Before I joined BigFooty, I didn't give a stuff about them. I didn't see them as a real life rival. I only know 1 in real life North supporter and he's a good mate. They were just a fellow Melbourne club that just "exsisted". But when you see some of the North-supporting jizzrags that post here, spending their time bagging our football club, it's hard not to take delight when North get their ass spanked in an Elimination Final.

I still don't hate the North Melbourne football club per se; not even close to the level I hate Carlton. But I love watching them fail, just because I know I can use that ammunition against some of their wankstain posters on this website.

In unrelated news, seeing Cotchin on the MVP spout the line about "If we'd just won a few more of those close ones."

All I could think of was "Butchyare, Blanche! You are in that chair!"

I don't think I commented on the Maxwell thing other than to compare it to Gecko's incident eg he was going.

but yep you have to be within 5 meters to block a player.

15.4.5 Prohibited contact and Payment of free kick
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player where they are satisfied that the Player has made Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player. A Player makes Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player if the Player:

e) pushes, bumps, holds or blocks an opposition Player when the football is further than 5 metres away from the opposition Player or is out of play;

of course, if you do it so far off the ball it can be hard for the umpires to see the block, and there's also kinda the debate about whether you should really stop the game for what was yes a block, but a light one. particularly if it's two players running to join a 6-8 man contest that they are 50 meters away from, or something like that. like, 'is they really enough force?'. most times they're probably isn't it. i think most people are fine with letting them go.

that's just for stuff like maxwell. marking contests are different.

if you think about it, it's probably a surprise we don't see more instances of blocks gone wrong.

Why do people quote the laws of the game when referring to umpiring decisions? About as useful as quoting the bible in a discussion of the law.

Pretty extraordinary if what Damien Barrett is saying about the Kevin Sheedy Medal is true. Crazily stupid way to do a B&F.

Link? Haven't heard anything about this, am quite intrigued.
