But will it? That's the uncertainty of nervous excitement.

That said, Atkins was killing it as a mid in the VFL so I wonder why we took so long to make the transition.

Impossible to know for sure, of course. But I wonder whether the time away from that role has actually been crucial to his current success. Given the step up from VFL to AFL is just immense, I figure that his time up forward and down back has taught him stacks about both getting the footy and then successfully finding space to helpfully dispose of it.

I've always loved his diamond-hard attack on the footy, his incredible capacity to halve contests and neutralise threats, and his hunger to hit bodies and hunt the opposition. But he certainly used to get caught more regularly with the footy (and/or not cleanly dispose of it to advantage) a lot more over the last couple of years. This year he appears to have adapted fully to the pace of AFL footy and is able to weave in and out of traffic much more easily as a result.

It's another really significant improvement in his game for mine. And a very tangible reason why a mids role now suits him better than it ever has before.

Hang on. We are in this up to our necks.

We will win this if the chips fall our way. And we can win this with a little bit of luck.

But we cannot control all of the variables at play so we may be the best team this year but still fall short. ** It happens.

Huge kudos to the team and staff for getting us to this position of great strength at this stage of the year.
