I get that the club might prefer to look 'externally' again when the time comes. After all, it worked out for us this time around.

But Kels appears to be tracking fantastically well on the coaching front. Seems to bring a great mix of footy smarts, relatability to players, knowledge of when to relax and when to switch on, and a inherent ability not to take himself too seriously as well. You can see him coaching like he played - with a hard edge, a dose of flair and a desire to do it all with a team-first attitude.

On current evidence, I'd be absolutely delighted if the GFC looked closely at him as a prospect for the top job when the time comes.

One other thing to consider with Kelly is when you look at his timeline & progress, he's not just gone from drafted by Geelong, having a 14/15yr career at the club before stepping into an assistant coaching role...

Instead with Kelly, after his time playing for Geelong had finished, he spent two years playing for Essendon during troubling times for them and then was an assistant coach there. He also took time away from the game completely before coming back to Geelong

So if at the right time in the future he's considered a strong candidate to become our next senior coach, while technically an internal appointment, he has had that external experience and knows something of life outside the 4 walls of the GFC

AFL legend Gary Ablett Sr is taking legal action against his old clubs and the league over claims he is suffering from the “severe effects of a concussion-related injury”.

AFL legend Gary Ablett Sr has lodged proceedings in the Supreme Court claiming negligence against the AFL and Geelong and Hawthorn Football Clubs.

Ablett, 61, who played 242 games for Geelong between 1984-1996 and six at Hawthorn in 1982, underwent a brain scan last year which revealed “significant, structural and functional brain damage”.

“I began getting headaches and pressure in the top of my skull around 2010, initially a few days a week,” Ablett Sr previously told the Herald Sun.

“It then led to depression, anxiety and extreme fatigue. Under the advice of doctors, I then had numerous scans to try and find the cause of headaches and skull pressure,” he said.

Ablett has lodged proceedings in the Supreme Court claiming negligence.

Ablett is represented by Michel Margalit, managing principal of Margalit Injury Lawyers, who spoke on Monday of her client’s dire situation.

“Gary Ablett has suffered clear neurological injuries due to his time playing professional AFL. He was a revered footballer, who dedicated himself to the game. However the after-effects of a stellar playing career are now coming to roost, with Mr Ablett suffering from the severe effects of a concussion-related injury,” said Margalit.

“It is tragic to see the impact of concussion on a life that was once so illustrious. The reality of concussion-related injury is bleak, and Mr Ablett’s day to day reality is so far removed from the person and the player that he once was.

“Mr Ablett made the difficult decision to pursue litigation after having been denied further assistance from the AFL Players Association. His injuries prevent him from working, and footballers are excluded from receiving workers compensation. He feels that this is the only way to ensure he is able to access the medical care he requires.”

It comes as two class actions have been lodged against the AFL in recent months on behalf of football players suffering the long-term effects of concussions

Tip of the iceberg.

It's been a long time coming, and ignored by all contact sport authorities (and some light-contact sports, eg soccer).

I looked it up, and the expression "punch drunk" was used about brain-damaged boxers as far back as 1912.

Agree but the interview with whoever when he was coked off his nut will not help.

You may recall I have met GAS a number of times in his prime (as have many others) and he was a very humble man. That counts for SFA though.

Tip of iceberg. Directors liability/fiduciary duty is looming on many.

Most of these cases are likely to be settled before getting to court.

That said, just who will foot the bill for successful claims seems unclear. Workcover is apparently running for cover claiming it's a leisure activity.

The AFL insurance policies may not cover the claims due to Total Permanent Disability being narrowly defined.

Certainly, Tom Harley is concerned and wants clarity from the AFL.

Holy crap - someone was saying Geelong have only 2 players rated 90 or over in AFL '23 (Stewart and Cameron). North Melbourne on the other hand have four (Cunnington, Jy Simpkin, Zurhaar and Larkey).

Nick Larkey's rated higher than Hawkins! Someone make it make sense!

Was watching a live stream of someone playing AFL '23 last night. Man, that game is bugged as hell at the moment. In between the game crashes, tackling is virtually an impossibility (players were waltzing from the back line through the middle of the ground and kicking goals from the goal square), there was also a passage of play where players couldn't pick up the ball for about 2 minutes - they'd just run over the top of it and the only thing they could do was soccer it.

Glad I decided to wait a couple of weeks before I get it so all these issues are ironed out by then.
