Just got a text fro mum saying my stepdad has decided to put our dog down. He's pretty old so he's started to go blind and lose his hearing a bit but I don't think the vet has said it's necessary to put him down. I'm not sure what to think.

That's pretty sad.

Sorry to hear that bp.

The one eventuality I guess of life is that everything has to die. We just spend the time in between trying not to think of that eventuality because death is a difficult thing for anyone to come to terms with.

My dog is the same, she is 16 and has lost most of her sight and her hearing is gone, still acts normal but gets up at night and walks around as she sleeps in the day.

Putting her down hasn't crossed my mind until she starts going loopy, and can't get around.

Sorry to hear. We went through the same thing with our golden retriever a couple of years ago. I think the vet would only say something if they strongly felt it should not be put down or if they strongly felt it should be put down. If they haven't said anything then there's no correct answer. It's up to the owner to assess the dog's quality of life and make a decision based on that. Your step dad might feel it's time because the dog's quality of life is deteriorating and it's better to put him/her down before it experiences any suffering. That's why in my opinion it's better making the call early rather than late. Everyone is different though.

Sorry to hear that. My dog is mostly blind due to old age cataracts and also mostly deaf, he bumps into things but he knows the place enough to navigate without many problems. Heart and kidney failure's the problem, he has seizure/fainting episodes but otherwise still enjoying life. Vet thought he'd be dead by now but he's still going, so I'd never put a dog down unless it's really no going back. Dogs can fare quite well even when blind

Sorry to hear bro. Unless he's been having a real struggle and is in pain can't see how/why they'd go through with it. It is very hard seeing them struggle in the latter years though. Just think about the good times from all those years

I know its no real consolation but at least you didn't have to go outside to find him passed yourself going to change his water or food. Happened to my mum earlier this year with our old family dog shook them up quite a lot :(

Oh sod... no. I've got a 14 year old Shitzu/Maltese on his last legs. Heart problems (we're giving him medication, stuffed hip, and going blind too (we didn't learn that one until very recently). He is very insistent in getting up and down the staircase by himself, but it is getting more difficult. Don't know how the big one (Border Collie) is going to cope.

I feel for you and the family. But as noted, do remember the good times. It is a struggle by this point, but hey, at least they lived a very good and long life in a loving home.

Yeah that would be horrible. At least he's going out on a high I guess. Painless too. Small consolations.

Appreciate all the thoughts guys. Looks like it's going ahead tonight so gonna go there now and spend a few hours with him before he passes.

Sorry to hear this buddy. It's almost nine years since we did the same with our dog, she was 17 at the time. Very difficult thing to do.

So if we'd known that Celtics were dominant in the NBA in the 50s and 60s we would have won $1000 at trivia tonight. **** that. Got the other two questions. Urgh.

have you had any more pets since then?

Spent a few years after that living in apartments in HK/NYC, so not really conducive to dogs.

But now we have some bunnies rescued from factory farms etc. Amazing pets/companions. One of them even has his own bedroom, I don't know how exactly that happened but it's his now.

my dog has her own room so I can see where you are coming from. Never thought I'd be that kind of person. The missus thinks I love the dog more thab her haha
