Re: Perfect year for the cats

Rising star and Premiership would be very, very rare. Most premierships sides (or sides with a window) haver very little space for blooding new players for enough matches to enable them to win the rising star.

Shows how good Selwood is to havee secured his spot in this team.

There is only one thing that will make things perfect : The premiership, the rest means nothing like chocolate sprinkles without ice cream.

Re: Will we win it ? ? ? ? ?

3 teams in the last 15 years have been on top of the ladder at round 15 and gone on to win the flag
usually they lose it?

Behold! A man in who there is no gall.

In this game, when all is said and done, there is one Premiership team and then there are 15 loser teams. End of story.

Re: Will we win it ? ? ? ? ?

As a life long Cats supporter and a member and a bloke who loves the township of Geelong I would love to see the Cats win a flag. It is one of my life ambitions that I want realized before the maggots get me.

If you were to ask me who I think will win the flag, I would have to say the WEagles. They play well on the G in finals. They all have Grand Final experience having been in the last two.

I think that both Hawthorn and West Coast could beat Geelong in the finals and the Cats have a poor record in finals against both teams.

I would have to see Harley holding that cup aloft at 5pm on Grand Final day before I believe that they can win it.

Over the past 15 years, here are the results of where the premier has finished the home and away season...

2006 - WCE (1)
2005 - Syd (3)
2004 - Port (1)
2003 - Bris (3)
2002 - Bris (2)
2001 - Bris (2)
2000 - Ess (1)
1999 - Kan (2)
1998 - Ade (5)
1997 - Ade (4)
1996 - Kan (2)
1995 - Car (1)
1994 - WCE (1)
1993 - Ess (2)
1992 - WCE (4)

So, for each home and away position, here are the premierships won:
1st - 5/15
2nd - 5/15
3rd - 2/15
4th - 2/15
5th - 1/15

So, based on history, the minor premiers have finished with the flag 33% of the time. The same amount for 2nd. So, you'd have to say, that it's generally (as it should be) a 50/50 once you're in the Top2 (also emphasises how important it is to finish Top2).

So, who cares about where we are at Rd15... if we're in the Top2 come end of season, history tells us that we're in very good shape to take it out (at least no worse off than any other position at end Rd22).

Clear as mud??? ;)

Re: Will we win it ? ? ? ? ?

No one remembers who finished on top of the ladder at the end of the H&A season. See Port in seasons 2002-2003.

It all happens in september and until september comes the lid will be firmly held in place.

Contradicts himself.

Yes this year is completely different, yes i been let down before but we have never dominated a season like this before. We have never been clear favourites like this in any other year. Other years there has been a equally or more dominant team. This year not really.

However im nervous as hell and this year would hurt more than any other by a long way if we fail. WCE are coming and cousins worries me. The place will be buzzing and they will hit their peak at the exact right time. That might happen but at this stage it looks bright.

The year of 'the lid'.

**** the lid. Do you guys think the lid is there for you/me to save face on Bigfooty in case we lose? Is the lid there to save your/my mental state from descending into shit if we happen to lose? I don't think you guys honestly care either way in my case. If I ruin my reputation on this site (not that I haven't gone a long way to doing it already) or if I get excited and then let down, I don't think you guys would care less. Therefore, if I choose to post about grand finals etc., it is my freaking business and not yours.

The next time I see someone posting about keeping the lid on, I think I'll scream. It's the job of the players and the coaches to keep their nerve and take it week by week. It is not my fault that Geelong lost in 89, 92, 94 and 95. It is not because I got excited about our prospects that they lost those grand finals. As in those years, if I get excited and we lose the grand final this year, it will not be due in any way to my actions. But at least if they don't make it, you can rest easy and tell yourself it's all ok because you were never excited in the first place.

Whether I decide to get stuck into other supporters on bay 13 or post stupid threads talking us up is my business and not yours. It does not affect you, it does not affect the club, so in all honesty, all other cats posters who find reason to whinge and talk about 'the lid' can get $%ed.

As for poor old Roowards, he is jsut a kid, and he's excited about his team. I could see the signs pre-season, so I'm guessing you guys could to. If he wants to create ridiculous posts and get into it, then let him. It's not people judge you based on his posts? I don't think all West Coast posters are tools, just because FU and Hotdog ran rampant for a while. Even if other posters did think you were a tool because of something someone else had said, you are posting under an anonymous username, and it has no real effect on you as a human being. If it bothers you that much, then you should seek help, for to worry about what another anonymous poster is thinking about you, based on the thoughts of a kid is bordering on lunacy.

In summary, **** the lid - get exicted.

Re: The year of 'the lid'.

This post isnt really about football at all...its about you... as in there is alot of "I" in there..

One thing "I"..;) agree with you about is who cares what anyone thinks. This is anonymous so say what you like within reason of course.

In the end though you are doing exactly what you are telling other people off for..you are trying to tell them how to think and are now ramming it down their throat.

If you want to scream about keeping the lid on and people posting the same way...maybe that suggests something about you and not anyone else.

Telling other people to settle down or keep an open mind whilst you go off the reservation doesnt seem to be making the sense you seem to think it makes.

If it upsets you so much there is a very simple solution to it all...

Agreed.

And can this thread be included with the other just as ridiculous one which has been popular today?

Re: The year of 'the lid'.

Just trying to make sense out of why some people (the majority in my opinion) on this forum seem to insist on 'keeping the lid on'. Have they fallen that far out of touch with reality, that they truly think that what the nonsense thye post on this forum actually affects the result of the team? Am I perhaps posting to several players or coaching staff who do need to keep the lid on? Perhaps Thompson and co look for ideas on the weekend's team on the Geelong total footy board? Or do people really care about my state of mind?

Re: The year of 'the lid'.

A very angry "I" it seems! I guess we all need an outlet. I love this club and I love the way we've gone about things this year - I am excited in my own way as are all other Cats' supporters so I don't know why we are turning on each other!!!

Thats a fair call. I doubt many of the people who matter at GFC really have time to read this board at all. I know if I was in their shoes I wouldnt be taking much notice. Some of its worth reading though.

I have been talking the lid down as you know mate...but in reality I am talking up keeping the status quo. Geelong has done really well with the cliche take each week as it comes this year...and a number of the players have more or less implied they want the lid kept on till September. I guess I am just echoing what has been a successful line of thinking this season so far.

Otherwise your dissertation on posting on anonymous websites makes more sense than most would like to admit.

PS September isnt that far away...

But you're contradicting yourself aren't you?

Why can't I say the exact same thing supporting the other side of the argument?

If you're allowed to talk Premierships, why are we not allowed to talk 'lids'?

I'm not saying that you're not allowed. I'm merely stating that you're all confused and your version of reality is quite possibly not a valid one. The lid should be reserved for the players and officials, but has no place on this board. Despite how great you think your knowledge base is, no matter how big your post total is, you do not have an impact on the weekend's result. The lid is a joke of a concept, and I do not understand why it is mentioned so much on here.

Re: The year of 'the lid'.

I'll be happy for the "lid" to remain on if we can continue this form for the next 10 years

Why do you only think this has got to do with the players and officials? I'm not getting excited because I know how hurt I will be if I get carried away and we don't go the whole way. Failure will rip me to shreds as it is, but getting ahead of myself would be ridiculous.

Maybe you don't hurt as much as myself and some other supporters, but the 'lid' is as much there for me as it is for those employed by the club.

If you took a more light-hearted approach to things... If you occassionally created a stupid thread talking up Geelong's premiership chances, then maybe it wouldn't get to you so much. We are all posting about a football team... A football team we have no influence on...

Re: The year of 'the lid'.

As has been mentioned in other posts - 'the lid' is our defence mechanism. Anyway, lighten up ladies and gents!:)
