The old suburban VFL/AFL grounds

Had a kick at Glenferrie Oval today and was shocked at the state of it. The turf is shocking and it clearly can get no use at a decent standard of any sport. What's the go? Such a historic oval, in a great location and in a prestigious council. Can they not afford to keep up the maintenance? I would have thought it could become a real community hub, right near the gym and pool and a kick away from Glenferrie Road and Station.

If the clubs don't care then why would anyone else?
The demographics of that area just don't seem to care about it anymore.

Actually thought the Eastern Ranges moved from Kilsyth to Glenferrie?

The council owns it, it would be a very valuable asset. Seems a complete waste sitting there untouched. Seems like any other plain public park gets more attention.

I meant that it's a pity the club washed it's hands of it. Carlton still trains at Princes, Saints went or are going back to Moorabbin, even the pies play FL games at Vic Park.
Hawthorn seems to have just dumped Glenferrie, probably rubbed off on everyone else??

I remember going there as a kid it always felt strange with the brick walls everywhere and rubbish, even during the week there was still rubbish from the games on the weekend.

I used to really enjoy going over to Glenferrie with my sushi and sitting in the middle of the ground on a sunny day during my year studying across the road.

It was only a few years ago the grass was in decent nick even if the facilities and general look of the other parts weren't. Lots of social teams used to play soccer and stuff there.

Now there's the new community gym. I don't buy the idea people in Hawthorn aren't interested in a park near their house - all people are. In fact wealthier people are more likely to have dogs, kids, and spare team to actually use a nice oval. There's also not many parks in the immediate vicinity so I too think it's weird the council haven't prettied it up.

Make the grass green, maybe put some paint on the Michael Tuck stand, bulldoze the little social club in between the stands, and I'd personally keep the other stand in the pocket - as ugly as it is, we should embrace as much old footy history as possible. I'd just generally make it less dirty, a lot cleaner, and advertise the place as a nice little oval that so happened to host VFL football for plenty of years. You could really do well and balance out the modern park with it being used as an Auskick and footy centre, not to mention making the most of its relics.

Even under the much cooler and wetter climate from when Glenferrie was in use, it was a very bad ground in wet weather. With a rapidly drying climate – we are having our driest winter on record and it will probably not rain for weeks – it is impossible to get water into the soil so it becomes rock hard dry.

More than that, Glenferrie was so bad a ground that Hawthorn wanted to get away from for two decades or so before they ultimately moved to share Princes Park with Carlton. It was the worst ground in the VFL throughout its period of use and in the 1950s and 1960s Hawthorn had unique-in-the-League plans to build a new ground in Mitcham. However, being just about the poorest club in the League Hawthorn had no money to do so.

Moreover, since Hawthorn moved from Princes Park to Waverley the club has had no practical connections with the Glenferrie ground. They trained at Waverley even after than ground was shut down.

There were preseasons when they had to train away from the ground due to its condition, I read somewhere that there was one preseason in the early 1960s (1961?) when the ground was completely unusable during the preseason. Even in the 1990s the ground was poor which lead to the Swinburne Uni side having to move grounds because they were chopping the ground up.

In hindsight the Hawks should maybe have taken over the large brickworks site in Hawthorn when it closed in the 1970s which could have been developed into a state of the art training facility.

But on the plus side the ground could be partly credited with how the Hawks were such a corridor dominating side in the 1980s because having to train on such a narrow ground would have forced their forwards to get out of one another way.

What is the timeline of Hawthorn training and playing venues?

Home grounds: 1906-1973 Glenferrie Oval, 1974-1991 Princes Park, 1992-1999 Waverley, 2000- MCG

Training: 1906-2006 Glenferrie Oval, 2007- Waverley

This was my understanding and what Wikipedia says. Until the club start building on that random satellite parkland out of the city in, what, a decade, the Hawks have only been based and trained at two places. Did they train at Waverley while playing there? Are you trying to say the club moved from Glenferrie (training) before 2006? Did they mainly train at Glenferrie and then do the odd session at whatever ground they were playing that week?

I still find it pretty cool/amazing that a professional club was at Glenferrie basically a decade ago. The place is so small I think most kids play on bigger grounds by the age of 14.

Also, does anyone know the last time Glenferrie had some sort of permanent tenant? Was there ever a TAC Cup or some sort of amateur side playing there? I seem to recall Swinburne Razorbacks saying it was their home ground for a while.

And when was the last semi-official AFL/Hawthorn game at the ground? I see a cringeworthy old pricks game of Langford v Platten was played there in 2006 as a centenary/leaving event. Has there been a pre-season match by the Hawks there since, say, the 90s? Or even an intraclub since 2006?

From memory, the practice match when Dermott stomped on Rayden Tallis's head was the last AFL game there, which would have been 93 or 94.

So basically, Hawthorn wanted to be like St.Kilda and have its own Moorabbin
Although I know but little, the idea if my recollections not be wrong may have been more radical than St. Kilda, who were trying to (and did) merely take over a VFA club ground.

Hawthorn wanted to move where the VFA never would dare (except very briefly and unsuccessful in the 1980s with Kilsyth) – to the far outer east. What the goal was I do not understand, except to have a better and more spacious ground in the most affordable and accessible location. Of course, Hawthorn in the 1960s was by the League’s standards of the time a very poor club, and even the richer clubs could not afford new grounds. So, naturally the Hawks possessed not the tiniest practical hope of of building a new venue.

I'm sure when i was a kid around the early 80's Hawthorn played a match at Glenferrie for points.

Also didn't they use Box Hill for a while as rheir training ground?

Sorry no games for premiership points in the 80s. Hawks were playing home games @ PP.

There was a pre season game early 90s @ the ground. Brereton then playing for the Swans stood on Tallis's head !!

They played a practice match against Carlton there in either 80 or 81 which was very well attended.

Here is an album of about 240 images I've collated over time:

I should stress that none of these are my own images. They have been sourced from places such as theholybootsfootballemporium.com, www.boylesfootballphotos.net.au, www.scoreboardpressure.com, Flickr, Swinburne Uni, State Library Victoria, the National Library Australia, amongst others. And googling of course.

Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing, amazing archive. So many memories! Man I miss the traditional home grounds :(

I went to Moorabbin last Friday for the first time as I had no idea how much was left. I was disappointed to see only about one-third of the main grandstand is left and you can't get into it.

Few comments:

– I really hope the Cats maintain the one or two old stands left on the wing and the terrace at the end. The terrace especially makes it feel like one of the last beacons of old, suburban football. The trough style urinal, the open end, the entrances, the fact it's always grey for day games and freezing at night...

– The Yarra Council pulling down so much of Victoria Park is a shame. I really don't understand it. Keeping the end a green space is nice, and I get the scoreboard was past the point of safety, but even keeping half of the outer wing would have been a decent extension of what the ground would have felt like in the industrial 80s and 90s. They've done a really good job with it at the moment but I do lament the museum feel (even half of) the wing would have given it

– Teams warming up on the cricket ovals adjacent to the actual ground at Princes Park... never knew this literally happened. Classic stuff

– Why does the sun hit Optus Oval so beautifully? There's nothing like it. Something about it is so vivid and orange, it's the absolute best place on a summer afternoon with the sun going down... it reminds me of how so many grounds look during the WAFL in old 80s videos... something about the shade of the sky and the way it hits is amazing. So unique and really quite un-Melbourne like

– I never knew Western Oval ever had a nice old grandstand...

– But as someone who never went there, to me I imagine it as it looked in around the mid-2000s: stark, hot feeling, concrete, very un-romantic. I would have liked to have seen a lot of that retained. To me it's a pretty notable example of how not to reinvent an old footy ground. Opening it up to the public, new uses, while retaining what made the ground what it was and embodying the feel of the club is what you want from a revitalisation. The Bulldogs have ****ed it. Nothing has been left and when it has, it's been desecrated. They had no idea whether to make it really pretty and boutique or whether to keep the grungey feel and in the end it's neither. The ugly pattern on the back of the stand, the plants, the way they connected the clubrooms... it is ****in awful. They should have kept that stand that overhung onto the road because it's really unique, kept some of the pavement and bitumen, and put a lot of grass around

– Windy Hill will one day be nothing, maybe not even an oval, or they'll make the pool and gym so big there'll be nothing left. That old stand in the pocket was a rare looking one and a ripper. I definitely like seeing Windy Hill these days because it's a very late 60s, 70s stadium that really reflects the housing and vibe of the area: very middle class, very aspirational, but not very trendy by today's standards. I really hope they keep whatever is left and also take care of it

– FFS North... there wasn't much to play with but they could have done a Lake Oval and used the shell of the old stand for a new clubroom. Or at least re-used some bricks. Or kept some stands, or the cool piping that was apparently seating around the perimeter. There's a few little things they could have integrated. In some ways the lack of obvious focal point or excess of ideas means they could have latched onto those few smaller things a lot more

– Moorabbin will go the way of Arden Street unfortunately. It's a hassle to get to for most but it's worth checking out... surface is incredible. Would have been nice for St Kilda to maintain the last remaining stand there and to have definitely kept that Miami Vice-feeling 80s 'Saints' sign from the front. They could have extended the new gym and facilities either side of the old stand – there's so much room there, it's pretty amazing it hasn't been developed with housing – and kept the old stand as seating for VFL games and training, while bringing the old museum up to scratch and making it the main point of interest. Doubt they'll do that and we'll get some tacky looking, 2010s-y thing there instead. Shame

– For all their money and the yuppieness of its neighbours, Glenferrie should be nicer than it is. I haven't been for years but I've had a few kicks there and used to regularly eat my lunch there and at one stage the grass was in really good nick. Now it seems dead. They should cherish those two wings and keep the benches, fences, and seating in good condition as they really highlight the absurdity of 20,000 people regularly being in them. I wouldn't mind seeing them get rid of the bitumen behind the city side of the goals. Put some grass in there and create an embankment. Get rid of that awful boxing gym. I'm still torn on that old stand because I definitely think you should keep what you have, but in another way the Tuck Stand is so nice it could stand alone and look much prouder in isolation. It's also probably pointless considering no games at all are played there (another thing I find weird). With the new gym and pool and fitness centre behind I find it weird it too wasn't revitalised, but ah, what can you do. Such a nice leafy area right around there and some more grass would really make it one of those enviable places to lay back on on a Sunday afternoon

The biggest ones though...

– The 1950s and 60s have a lot to answer for at the MCG. Those beautiful old grandstands... all around the ground! Just gone! I understand it would not be what it is today, and having 100,000 in great modern amenities and seating means the Grand Final and all blockbuster games are still there, but it is a shame when you think of the heritage the place could have had

– Knocking down the MCC facade in the 90s... jesus... had a real old Wembley look with the big pillars. I'm sure you could have kept those. The big thing about the MCG is how ugly it looks from the outside. No heritage, no modern coolness... just ugly

I don't know why, but there's something beautiful about Optus Oval. I think it might be because it's frozen in time, so large yet doing mostly nothing.

I disagree. The Essendon District League plays finals there so it gets used. But that pocket grandstand they knocked down looked incredibly modern, and knocking it down was so unneccesary.

Moorabbin is so disappointing now. Take a look at the plans. And right now there's only a third of the grandstand left, now it's all going to be knocked down. Shameful.

The bricks from the old stand at Arden Street were used in the current facilities FWIW.

It’s a damn shame it retains nothing from its active days though. The old bluestone race is probably the only feature.

So much money wasted on Saints 'homes'.

How eerie is it standing in the middle of Waverley looking around and only seeing one tenth of what was there.

Glenferrie Oval still retains its terraces on the railway wing and both stands including the Tuck stand which is heritage listed so it will be retained, there really is nothing stopping the Hawks and the council getting rid of the weigthlifting center and setting up a small stand or extending the Ferguson stand and the ground would have a capacity of about 5k which would be an okay size for VFL or AFLW matches when the the Hawks finally get a team.

Glenferrie is just way too small for bonafide, constant events I think. It should be a park (there aren't that many in the area) with sloped grass behind the goals at the Tuck Stand, maaaybe retaining the Ferguson if you can half-dress it up. Would hate to see them to and extend anything else or put a new stand up as it's just too small and would look forced or cramped. Should be a beautiful little park.

If they removed the weightlifting center then that would open that whole end up, like the other end has the hill and shaded area separating it from the carpark and the gym.

The Ferguson Stand at Glenferrie is supposed to be condemned and getting knocked down (eventually).

That old Stand at Windy Hill was the Showers Stand and that was condemned as well as a safety hazard (it's a shame as it was a beautiful stand)

Arden Street looks like one of these community parks that you see popping up in new housing estates in places like Cranbourne or Caroline Springs. Such a shame that Moorabbin is going to look no different to whatever setup they have at Seaford most likely.
