“30 minutes a half.”

“The game clock stops when the ball goes out of play.”

Will the clock still be running for fouls and injuries? If some article reckons we get 60 minutes of actual game time per 90 minutes (no way is the ball out of play for 5 minutes, let alone 30), then will we get a sh*t ton less game play for 60 minutes with the fouls and injuries that will still be occurring. This doesn’t actually do anything to improve football, it will just short change fans even more.

How can anyone who watches football think the ball is in play for 85 minutes a game? Wtf? Nearly every corner, goal kick, free kick takes at least 30 seconds.

I think I’d back “some article” that has actually researched and come up with the data than your gut feel.

I never actually said that. I don’t think this will happen anyway, there is nothing wrong with keeping football at 45/90.

I meant for throw-ins. For everything else yes, but the proposed rule only really says for “out of play” - not free kicks or injuries.

Out of play means not in-play, i.e. any stoppage.

Could we trust PGMOL to keep time accurately?

Reckon even with a margin of error games might get a little bit more action in play.

I’d imagine in the old days there was less professional acting wasting time? Hence more playing time than now.

If we’re saying 50+/60 mins out of 90 is not good enough why would we accept a full 60? Don’t we want to increase 60/90 to 75-80+?

Yeah because of stoppages. So just stop the clock when the ball goes out or there is a foul. No extra time and still play 90. Problem solvered.

Ok so then we'd have 45 minutes of action. Fine by me. That's a big jump and much longer games then.

It feels like trying to solve a problem that’s not really there. Just because the ball is out of play doesn’t mean nothing is happening. The tension leading up to a corner or free kick can be some of the best times at the ground for atmosphere.

I wouldn’t be a massive fan of a countdown style clock for half/full time either. The game ending as just as a corner is being met or a shot taken takes away some of the excitement.

It's not diffusing that tension though? It's just restoring the concept that football is a game of 45 mins halves. If you're only getting about 20ish minutes of gameplay, that's not really the same thing.

I guess my point was I pretty much consider those moments as gameplay. I just always assumed the ball was out of play in some form or another for a good chunk of the 90 and haven’t noticed it become significantly worse the last few years.

But I guess all I'm saying is you'd still get the exact same moments and exact same tension, but just not losing various amounts of gameplay to timewasting.
