The very soft red helped, but they deserved the lead before it anyway and with some better finishing it could’ve been 4 or 5 by the end. The performance was almost as impressive as the result.

I don't even think I'd call it soft, the fact the ref gave a yellow then realised that it was a second yellow so went to take it back.. if it's a yellow it's a yellow. If that's a second yellow then so be it.

The replay showed he didn’t actually do anything though. McGree shouldn’t have got a card from the play either and was blowing up about his card. Even Arnold couldn’t believe what was happening.

The replay showed there wasn’t a scuffle though. There was jostling for position but neither player had an issue with it.

Even though it helped us immensely I thought it was very poor by the referee to yellow card both platers. (and subsequent red for the Argie player) Should of just let the set piece happen and penalise any players that continued to infringe once the ball went in play.


IMO VAR law should be amended so incidents like the second yellow can be looked at if it results in a red card. The best way to do it would be to have a panel of 6 simply vote on whether the 2nd yellow card was justified. 5 out of 6 majority saying it wasn't justified required to overturn the yellow card. I believe 6 out of 6 referees on an independent panel all would have probably voted that the 2nd yellow card wasn't justified.

Not just for that. Any incident that requires overturning by VAR. 5 out of 6 majority vote required to overturn original decision.
