I think that's a bit excessive.

Fair enough. It probably is excessive but I don't see a better way of ending those controversial decisions that aren't overturned by VAR. Having a panel of 6 vote on them and needing a 5/6 majority would remove much of the subjectiveness around some decisions.

Didn’t see the entire game last night, however I did see the second yellow card just before half time. Thought it was quite soft and a harsh way to go off.

Very impressive performance from Australia otherwise.

It always does.
I've weirdly never known that. Kinda defeats the purpose of the opening ceremony haha. Why dont they just wait a day to start?

I guess two weeks is such a short amount of time to host a football tournament. I've never thought about that.

Because you can't fit a football tournament in such a short time unless you play every 2nd day?

Only just watching the mini match now. Agree with Harper. Poor decision by the ref, not a yellow imo

How many Olympics have you paid attention to? There's always plenty of events before the Opening Ceremony.

I remember the Australia v Italy match at the MCG in 2000, days before the opening ceremony itself. Was such a great atmosphere that match. Pirlo with the only goal (a late winner if I recall correctly).

It’s always been a thing I believe.

I was there, 93k I believe. Some Italian team that one. Gattuso, Pirlo etc.

Yes I appreciate that game more now knowing the careers some of those guys went on to have. That match and the 97 Australia v Iran game, both were brilliant experiences to attend despite the results of the matches themselves.

Did anyone else watch Independiente v Santos in the Copa Sudamericana? The players have the close control of Spanish players but the game was end to end. As good as any UEFA Champs League game.

I had a chance to attend that match. I chose the USA/China Women’s match a few days later instead. As I recall I chose that option as the USA and China were the two best Women’s teams in the world at the time and it was a double-header with Chile/Spain (I needed Google as I remembered it was Chile but forgot their opponents) following it at the MCG.
