Nah you looking at wrong. The 'franchise' or look at it as a company is moving from one city to another but it's still the same entity. Swans name and colours were kept.

For example Baltimore Ravens mentioned earlier started from Cleveland Browns but difference was owner agreed just to move the players and coaches not the franchise/company so Cleveland kept the Browns 'company' and a few years later was permitted to start a new team with the history.

Closed leagues is different to open euro leagues. Soccer has adavantage of small towns/clubs making the big league. Look at Elversberg in Germany, a town of just 13,000 and just been promoted for the first time to Bundesliga.

Guingamp in Ligue 1 is the best example. Population of 7k. Made it to Ligue 1 between 2013/19.

Yeah and it's a load of shit. Effectively South Melbourne ceased to exist and a new club was created 800 km away, pretty much cutting off their existing fan base. That's the disconnect between it being the same club and inheriting the history.

I much prefer the European football system. Man City didn't cease to exist when they were shit. They dropped to the 3rd tier then made their way back.

If you seriously think there's a disconnect then you don't watch much footy. Swans regularly out-draw Melbourne clubs when playing in Melbourne.

How do you know that? Are you basing this on the overall crowds when playing Melbourne clubs?

From the games I've been to in Melbourne and watching the games? Regularly not always - but against the Dogs, Dons, Dees, Roos and a few others we get very good crowds.

Happens a lot in American sports. For example the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis a couple of decades and remained the Colts. So keep the records.

Baltimore Ravens was created years later and does not retain old Baltimore records
Baltimore Ravens were the Cleveland Browns franchise, but left their old Cleveland baggage behind.

There's definitely some oddities there. Utah Mammoth in the NHL are a "new" franchise, despite it being the Arizona franchise that packed up and went to Utah. The Arizona franchise is on hold and Utah became new.

Stuff like this is fun. The home match against Bayern Munich is going to be an epic occasion for that town.

As the name suggests Estádio Nacional is a national stadium. At the time it was opened the population of Portugal was about 8 million. It was built with a small capacity for budget reasons. It's strange that it hasn't been significantly upgraded apart from making it all-seater. It didn't make sense for it to host the 1967 European Cup final. The final was awarded to Portugal but Benfica's Stadium of Light could have held twice as many spectators.

Estádio Nacional still hosts the Portuguese Cup final but only for sentimental reasons. It would be like having the FA Cup final at Hillsborough and each club being given 10,000 tickets.
Portuguese association probably has a hard time hitting up benefactors when they can say "Why don't you play at Benfica & Sporting's stadiums?"

If English language Wikipedia is to be believed Portugal does play elsewhere the national cup final is the only significant match played at Estádio Nacional

I think the career is pretty much done. Such a shame.

Hope his life is on the rails. Got a lot of time for Raheem, he'a had a career 99% of footballers would dream about but he never seems to get any credit for it.

I don't think you should look at a football club moving cities as comparable to a company doing the same thing. If you have been watching Welcome to Wrexham it's all about the relationship of the community to the club. But all clubs over there are like that. The football club is part of the identity of the town.

I find it strange to think that South Melbourne supporters would just shrug and say "Oh well, I guess our team plays in Sydney now".

What a player & top bloke. There is no way any fan group could possibly dislike him.

PL Legend.

Surely a manager in the making.

Or perhaps he resumes his cricket career (was playing at a top level as a youngster).

Perhaps he needs to get out of Europe completely. It seems moving to London was the worst possible thing for him. Perhaps moving to somewhere like MLS, A-League, J-League might just reinvigorate him. Would be a shame for his career to finish like this.

Well i guess better than going under completely. South was in a fair bit of financial trouble at the time.

I don't like the way they do it so easily in NFL but not much fans can do about it. I kind of follow the Houston Texans and they moved to Tennessee to become the Titans. A few years later Houston was given a new franchise called the Texans. But the Tennessee keep the Texans history!

closest thing i think in English football is Wimbledon. Moved to Milton Keynes. Wimbledon supporters said get stuffed and formed their own club. Eventually MK returned history to new Wimbledon.

Watched the Liverpool doco on the night in Instanbul (Netflix).

It was ok but I felt they didn't focus enough on the game itself and instead focused more on the 12 months leading up to it. Still an easy watch but felt it could've been better.

The South Melbourne board voted to stay in Melbourne but the VFL overruled them. I think it's a consequence of the franchise closed system. It's ultimately designed to 'grow the business'. So if a historic club isn't pulling its weight financially they can be sacrificed for the inclusion of an invented club that might better enhance revenue.

I watched that too.

It was fascinating to see that Benitez was a very technical coach with poor man management skills.

How many Liverpool fans left at half time?

A couple of the penalty saves from Dudek in the shoot out he must have been half way to the penalty spot.

Yeah well a lot of those NFL clubs did it because of stadium funding ..new cities offered more. Most of them shit moves left a lot of fans gutted.

Then again at the moment I’d wish they move Essendon to another planet

Yep, the one where they win it he's miles off his line.

Wasn't the winning one, was the one against Kaka. Finished at the 6 yard line. Could've just about chipped him.

The winning one was actually a rare one that he was closer to the goal line.
