Big money in reffing these days. $110 per game in my league and most refs generally get a reserves / seniors match on the same day. That's $220 for 4 hours work and legitimately tax free as it is classed as a hobby.

I'm only getting paid $50 I think, outrageous!

Really? $110 in my association. More when you referee higher up state league teams.

Yeah only $50 in mine, and probably less for the games I do for the under 18's, not sure yet, guess I'll see after this Saturday.

Anyone here a ref? I have my first games this weekend and a bit nervous about getting things wrong - biggest is the difference between indirect and direct free kicks. Any tips on what to do? I feel like under-officiating is better than over-officiating but at the same time don't want to let too much go.

U18s and U15s in the morning then the reserves grade for my team in the arvo before I play.
Anyone with a man bun. Get the red out. Lay down the law straight away. Ref SM don't tolerate shitty hairstyles ;)

I'll just bring a pair of scissors. ;)

Sorry Oz - just because something is a hobby doesn't mean it's tax-free. You are meant to declare all income and presuming you earn enough there will be some tax on it.
Yeah irony is I chat back to refs the worst in my team so going to be funny being on the other side of it. I'll try and set everything out before the game - in terms of what I'll be looking for (grappling at corners is my biggest gripe, I'm going to change the way football is reffed from the bottom up!) - but with smaller tussles I'll probably try and let it go until it becomes blatant.
I bet you don't call the grappling! As soon as it comes down to a potential penalty and you can see five or six people doing it, it's tricky. Having said that, defenders and strikers cheating by manhandling is common, so go for it! Strikers diving is also common, but often it's because refs won't give a foul unless you go to ground. If you show early on that you don't require players to scream out and roll around to get a foul then I actually think it should limit simulation. The worst I had was when a striker was leaning into me so much with a 50/50 that I just stepped away and he fell over... Only for the ref to call a penalty because he reckoned I must've pulled the striker over.

With hobbies as long as you aren't doing certain things then I believe it is tax free, it's as soon as it looks as if you're running a business that you get lumped with tax. For instance, I don't declare my gambling winnings as income on my tax return because gambling is considered a hobby.

Cheers for those tips though, great point about paying fouls without players falling over.

Best refs I have found are the ones who explain their decisions. Worst are the ones who don't move out of the centre circle and refuse to say why they gave / didn't give a free.

Got a lot of respect for refs; getting abused for a couple of hours is not something I would enjoy in my spare time.

Yeah I have to do it because we need to have two refs in our team, slightly annoyed because it was put to me as something that would cost me nothing and then earn me money, turns out the bit that costs me nothing is the course itself, but then it's $160 for the ref kit. Oh well, some extra money is always handy for not much work.

can you just phil dowd it and put on 20kg, trail behind the play and guess?

'winnings'

Hey, if I had to declare my winnings then I could use my losses to offset my other income. ;)

Bloomin' 'eck. I think you're right. That seems pretty dodgy to me. I guess the idea is that you don't want to discourage people from selling whatever they are doing, and on the other hand you avoid a bunch of paperwork from that person having to justify that the money gained was offset by lost money on whatever associated costs they had.

But, still, I would've thought most people wouldn't do it without the pay, so it's surprising that they justify referees as primarily doing it for pleasure. That linked case also suggests refs can't earn more than $2K (in NSW in 2009), so I wonder at what level they might re-classify it.

Overall, I can't believe we are taught so little about tax in secondary school. Sure it changes often, but the advantages of knowing the system are substantial, especially if you can't afford a good accountant.

Really? Interesting. At this rate I'd earn 2k in about 2 months. Season runs for about 6 months, so...

yeah i dont have much to worry about on that front.

hello sportsbet? yeah someone hacked my account and put on numerous poor bets. can i have my money back?

Windfall income has never been taxable in Australia.

It is in the US above certain amounts. We used to have an office in LA about 5 years ago. I spent a month there and on a weekend away in Vegas one of my colleagues won 25k on a progressive jackpot. Ended up with 15k after tax IIRC. Enough for us to have a "big" night :)

That's the reason why US lotteries are huge. Nearly half of it is payable in tax.

As for hobbies we've been instructed that so long as refereeing remains a hobby and not your full time job it is tax free.

It wasn't tax Fred until about 10-15 years ago when the rules were relaxed because nobody bothered thanks to losing 30% of their earnings to tax.

You're silly sm you should claim to be a professional punter and claim those losses and take it off your personal tax return ;)

Ye old win win I say

It was the one thing I actually to this day remember from my uni tax classes that your tax losses can be claimed as a business loss.

Yep! But in order to claim that I'm a professional gambler I'd have to show a level of research and continuity of business etc.
