But then fans would just not buy memberships etc because they know if they'll hold off they can get in for free.

Seems like it screws the club either way tbh.

I don't think that would happen at all. You'd just introduce surge pricing. Games with low demand will have the ticket prices drop, games with high demand will have the ticket prices rise.

So take Getafe for instance. If they're going to lower ticket prices to try and fill the stadium, why would you renew a season ticket? You'd just wait until tickets became cheaper/free (knowing that they will because the stadium won't fill out) and take them up then.

Just seems a very average deal for the lesser clubs.

I suspect a lot would. Personal finances > Club's bottom line for most people I would think.

If you're already willing to pay for you season ticket i cant see why you'd chose to not to get one just because you think can get a better deal by holding out. Carlton did something similar where people who weren't renewing got better deals and it definitely annoyed the loyal fans, but they're that loyal they still signed up the next year

Well we went backwards in membership for a couple of years (albeit their were other mitigating circumstances).

It's very hard to compare the Australian public to the Spanish public as well I would have thought.

If the AFL went down this path, do you think Carlton would fill out Etihad by offering reduced tickets each game? Would there be members that dropped off their membership in order to chase the cheaper tickets each week?

I'd say the crowd would increase if prices were dropped or free tickets were introduced and it'd be the same in Spain.

I guess it's weighing up if it's better off getting a 40-70% full stadium & getting a fine at full prices vs 75-95% with no fine with lower prices. The extra bums on seats at a lower margin & no fine could in fact be better financially for the club
