I'd have Eriken in front of KDB.
Not 100% sure I agree with that. As much as I love Eriksen, I think KDB just shades him. He's as good on the ball as KDB, but KDB has that little more dynamism than Eriksen. Close though.

And speaking of out of this world assists, that ball he played to Alli for our second goal in the FA Cup semi was absolutely ****ing sublime.

What do you think a winger is? Lol. A winger is a wide midfielder. You must be thinking in terms of FIFA which differentiates between RM/LM and RW/LW.
Nah I think there's a difference between winger and wide midfielder.

At least, in my one season of soccer our coach who played pro in the lower English leagues I think and in Ireland used to complain if the wide midfielders in his 4-4-2 played too far forward. He used to shout at them 'yae not facking wingers, yae midfielders!' Mind you, he was about 70 and probably had an older mindset.

Interesting. Anyone I've held a conversation with regarding this topic from England has berated any use of winger as anything other than a midfielder. It's why you have wing-backs - they're full backs who double as wingers, that is, wide mids.

Haha looks like Carragher had a ball at Carrick's testimonial. Wiped out Neville and then mooned the United fans who were booing him.

was that before or after Giggsy merked him and left Carra on his arse?

A winger is not a ******* midfielder for **** sake. Jesus Christ.

I guess Neymar, Suarez & Robben are midfielders too :$

Not sure why you're getting so worked up about it. A winger is a midfielder. They play on the wings of the pitch.

A wing-back is a defender who also pushes up to - you guessed it - the wings.

A wide forward is a different thing entirely.

Unless this is a team mate bantz gone wrong two Lazio players have come out as gay.

Good them as it's a very brave thing to do. I'm sure Lazio nazi far right ultra fans will understand and support them....

Since the 90's ended wingers aren't wide midfielders. On the rare occasion 4-4-2 is deployed wide mids are called left or ride mid. Traditional wingers don't exist anymore as they've been replaced by wingbacks and forwards. If someone refers to a player as a winger they're more of a forward now. Welcome to modern football

Only by people who get their footballing knowledge from FIFA. For the rest of us wingers are wide midfielders. If you play with three forwards the wide forwards are still called forwards.

He has a point in saying the role has changed IMO. Traditional wingers that actually play like wide midfielders are becoming a rare breed. For example at United all our "wingers" are either forwards or attacking midfielders being played out of position and the only genuine wide men in the squad (Valencia & Young) have been converted into fullbacks.

True, but I think this is more down to the fact that more and more teams are going with either 3 at the back or 3 up top, meaning that there is very rarely a formation that employs traditional wingers. A good example of a side that does though is Crystal Palace, who very much play the traditional 4-4-2 with Zaha and Townsend as their two wingers - that is, wide midfielders. Although they play more of a 4-4-1-1- formation I think (Milang will know better than me) because I think Cabaye slots in behind Benteke. But Zaha and Townsend are definitely wingers in the traditional sense.

For us, Snodgrass was very much a traditional wideman, and later on Markovic and Grosicki were wide midfielders unless we played them further forward in a 4-3-3 formation in which case they certainly played as forwards.

Not many are agreeing with you on here.

Like many have said, football has changed and a winger is not a wide midfielder.

Might have something to do with my first sentence then.
