Was reading this in the AFL site

15. Port Adelaide – Jay Nash
(Central District) 21 December 1985, 185cm, 75kg

Nash is a fine defender/midfielder with polished skills, who achieved back-to-back All-Australian status in 2002-03 after he shone in the past two National AFL under 18 championships. An AIS/AFL academy member in 2002, Nash was a member of the Central District reserves premiership team this year, which meant he was unable to attend this year’s National AFL Draft camp. However, he rated among the top 10 per cent for the standing vertical jump at the South Australian state screening. Nash has attracted strong interest as a late first to second round draftee and is highly rated by the Power, who will look at him closely with their first selection. The home grown factor will also play an important role in Port Adelaide’s assessing of players, particularly after the Nick Stevens episode, but if one of the first 14 slip through the net, expect the Power to look for the best available player. He is the son of former South Australian cricketer John.

30. Port Adelaide – Brad Symes
(Central District) 7 May 1985, 185cm, 75kg

A versatile defender/midfielder, Symes had an outstanding season in 2003, which included All-Australian selection at the National AFL under 18 championships, while he was named South Australia’s most valuable player of the carnival. He was also a member of the Central District reserves premiership side to cap off a great year. A member of the AIS/AFL academy in 2002, Symes is a skillful player, who has attracted the interest of both his home town clubs, particularly Port Adelaide, who rate him highly. Essendon is also believed to have sounded out Symes at No.28. He has been touted by many as a top 25 selection and is likely to be a second to early third round choice.

34. Port Adelaide – Ryan Murphy
(Gippsland Power) 24 May 1985, 192cm, 80kg

Murphy looms as a fascinating pick, as there has been some late talk that he could be in the mix for Fremantle at No.12, which would be quite a surprise. However, there is no doubt that he is looming as a likely draftee, possibly around the third round mark. Aside from Fremantle, the tall key defender/forward has attracted keen interest from Port Adelaide and Sydney, while Geelong is also in the mix. He is a good lead, an excellent kick – particularly in front of goal – while he has good endurance and this was shown with efforts in the shuttle run and 3km time-trial at this year’s National AFL Draft camp.

39. Port Adelaide – Harry Miller
(Port Adelaide Magpies) 11 June 1985, 174cm, 75kg

Miller is an exciting forward/midfielder, who possesses a great leap and sense of goal. He showed that during the year at SANFL level, while he was particularly impressive in the National AFL under 18 championships, when he jagged some freakish goals while representing South Australia. Miller, who has been likened to Jeff Farmer or Graham Johncock as a player, is likely to be snapped around the third round of the National AFL Draft. He has attracted plenty of interest from Port Adelaide, while Melbourne is also a big rap for him. There is a school of thought that if he was to slide past the Power and the Demons opted to use their final pick in this draft, then Miller is their man. He is cousins of Port Adelaide’s Peter and Shaun Burgoyne and the Kangaroos Daniel Wells.

46. Port Adelaide – Edward Sansbury
(Central District) 26 November 1983, 179cm, 78kg

Sansbury was a member of the Central Districts senior premiership team in 2003 and made his made on the match, booting five goals in an outstanding display. He only just missed out on receiving the Jack Oatey Medal for best on ground honours. Since his performance in the SANFL grand ginal, Sansbury has entered right in the mix of players to be in contention for a third or fourth round selection. Both Port Adelaide and Adelaide are interested in him, with the Power potentially nabbing him with their fifth and final pick at No.46. Adelaide would also show some interest, if he was available at No.58 or No.67.

Here's the AFL website link

I wouldn't be happy if we took BOTH Miller & Sansbury, we have some good small goal-sneaks already

Its stupid. Obviously Alan Stewart hasn't been telling Burgan anything, so he just went with locals.

Nash + Symes = 2x midfielder/defenders - this does not meet a need, so why two?

Miller + Sansbury = 2x small forward pockets - this really does not meet a need, so why two?

And one tall in Ryan Murphy (who wouldn't be a bad get).

It goes against everything Stewart and even Choco have been saying publicly. No tall taken at #15 (even tho Gayfer, Morrison and even the much loved Spaandermann are taken later), no 19-25yo plug and plays from other comps or recycled with later picks. And yeah the two small opportunist forwards is way overkill. I wouldn't mind Miller, but that's a Port thing with me. I'd like Parry and Sinkunas too. And are we really out of the market for a ruckman to develop?

Pretty poor effort really. Seems he doesnt have a clue about what we need.

Altho Nash and Symes are good young talents, we dont need both, and certainly would not pass up Spaanderman, Morrison or Gayfer for them. Maybe Symes at pick 30.

Murphy sounds alright.

Again, there is no need at all for Miller and Sansbury and they would be forever waiting to get a game behind the Burgoynes, Dew and Pickett. Sansbury maybe as i can see him turning into a midfielder, but not Miller.

We dont need forward pockets and we dont need midfielders. We need 2 good talented talls, and then we can worry about the rest.

Is Matt Burgan expecting Alan Stewart to go on a Central Districts spending spree???

Im really beginning to warm to Llane Spaanderman, I was hoping on Quinten Lynch a couple of years ago but we weren't able to get him via the rookie draft so heres hoping for Llane.

Who knows, Fergus Watts could still slip so we might end up with him and I wouldn't mind us picking up Bill Morrison at 30 if still available. I don't think Port is very high on Bill's list of clubs but those are the breaks if you want to be an AFL footballer.

Any chance we might be interested in Shane Morrison from Brisbane? He is looking for an opportunity and with probably one tall position up for grabs he might be the player for the job.

He's decided we'll go overboard on the home-grown talent after the Nick Stevens episode. Not that any of the ones selected are bad, although Sansbury AND Miller is possibly not what we want in two smalls. I expect Miller to go to some team like Richmond with a 3rd round pick. Richmond seem to like the small, skilful, in-and-out-of-the-game ones viz. Rodan and Krakouer.

I've yet to see a draft selection made on the basis of state of origin, other than father-and-son. Port will select those players if they have their eye on them, not because SA bred takes any kind of precedence.

I reckon that anyone that thinks that doesn't know Port Adelaide.

Not that any of the ones selected are bad
No, just inappropriate.

One of Watts, Morrison, Johnson, Gayfer, Spencer, McConnell or SPAANDERMAN will be our #15 pick.

I'd be very surprised if the Power took Billy Morrison at #15

They didn't even interview him at the draft camp so they obviously don't rate him that highly. I'd scratch his name from your list

I am so blissfully wrong!

I suppose 1 out of 5 isn't bad. No-one could really have expected Troy Chaplin to still be available at 15, Rob Forster-Knight was a bit of a weird one although Alan Stewart had already suggested a possible pick at a recycled player, and the late picks are always anyones guess. Miller could very well have been our 34 if Hawthorn hadn't taken him at 25. There are really too many different reasons to pick a player for our draft to be predicted past #5 with any real accuracy. In NBA basketball and NFL football, the two big drafts in the world, sportscasters are often quite accurate with their predictions because the teams need a definite type of player. But in AFL you may be going for, say a tall defender but if a greatly skilled midfielder unexpectedly becomes available your whole thinking can change. And this affects things right down the line, as teams are faced with whether to select someone they didn't think would be there.
