Me and a mate went to Crown last night, he's 18 and I'm still 17, and we were bumming around, and he decided he was gonna have a shot at the pokies. He claimed he was going to be smarter than everyone else and once he won he'd be outa there quick smart. So after a while I rang him(as I couldn't go in) and literally had to drag him out. He won about 15 bucks but was adamant he would've won more if I hadn't made him leave. Sucked in completely. The whole "win first then lose" theory seems pretty spot on.

Thinking about it afterwards... holy s--- these things are the f---ing devil.

Any other stories/experiences along the lines of "I'll just give it a shot" that have turned into alot more?

How people can whittle away hours in front of a machine that has more than likely been rigged so it's nigh on impossible for you to win any money is something I'll never quite understand.

Glad the things are confined to the Casino over here - they're the ultimate pub killers.

One of the scourges on society. WA has got it right and only has pokies in the Casino.

Why would anyone think they are in with a good chance? They are made to make money for the establishment, not give good odds.

Eat your money like a mother ****er.

I've been on them 3 times (won twice, the other time walked away when I'd lost $30) but the amount some people put in

There was this fella next to me betting $5 a spin, yes, $5 each time the things went around. Considering you can do about 12 spins a minute thats $60 a minute he was blowing.

When I go, it's usually when I've been out for a meal, and I set myslef a limit (as I did with the $30).

When that's gone, I leave.

I don't like playing pokies, but today I was heading to the shops when it started raining, so I went into the "Coach & Horses" pub, to wait until the rain stopped, I decided to chuck $5 into a 1c machine, 5 minutes later, I won a $923 jackpot, I took my money & ran. :D

In Victoria the average pokie machine pays out between 87-90% of what is put in, so winning in the short term is certainly possible, hence the attraction. People can get lucky and make a quick few hundred bucks. In the long run, the establishment will take a nice percentage of all the money that goes into the machines.

have played the pokies twice, once after the missus and i went out for a meal with friends to the foresters arms. they wanted to go in and play the pokies, we went in only to be courteous and threw 5 bucks into a machine which spat out $280. the other time i threw 5 bucks in and lost it in 2 spins.
i stick to the horses, at least you have a reasonable chance by doing the form. btw, the dogs are the same as the pokies, no chance of winning big and you never really know what they've done to the dogs.

Nope, still more chance of becoming poor, gambling is too risky, good for an occasional tipple, but do it frequently & odds are you will lose.

I only bet on the horses at the Melbourne Cup, maybe I'm a little tight, but I don't like throwing my money away. ;)

Put $3 in on my 18th birthday and won $200.

Had to ask the problem gambler next to me to get it out for me. Poor bloke was putting in 50's at a time. He looked like he could have passed out when some smart ass cleaned up.

Have only played occasionally after that. Only put in $10, nothing more.

Same as me, I asked the people next to me if the machine was going to pay in $1 coins & they told me that I had to go get an attendant to come & write me a cash voucher.
