Teal prison bars are excellent.

Imagine if we entered the league with them. Then we'd all love them rather than irrationally poo-pooing it because of 'bastardisation of PB' nonsense.

Abandoning the PB for chevrons is a bigger insult to the PB than wearing them in a different colour.

Black with teal bars home, black with white away, white with black clash. Or any colour. Could be magenta or beige or lime green or red. No matter the palette, if it was prison bars it was Port Adelaide.

By that logic we should all still be enamored with the SBS guernsey!

Also there's a deeper issue here. Putting aside whether or not this "looks good" (which is up to individual taste) it's doomed because of the fact that the club was forced into changing its colours. Teal isn't inherently bad but to many supporters it represents very un-Port Adelaide characteristics like compromise and submission. It's a colonial flag basically. Not everyone will agree on that but I think many would.

That's also partly why a return to the Prison Bars, in their unaltered original black and white glory, is still wanted by some after more than 20 years. It would be a symbolic show of strength, reversing the compromise, tearing up the colonial flag and replacing it with our own.

After that's done you could probably get away with that magenta recolour you've done as an alternate kit! But not before.

P.S. Damn those socks are ugly!

Really interesting thought. What if Port entered the league with a different identity is probably my favourite thought experiment.

I think think it's undeniable that the black and white prison bars are the best combination. However I think it definitely works as a design in just about any colour combo. Look at when the QLD U18s wore them. Looked good. It'd look good in any well classic colour combo.

We enormously weakened our branding when entering the AFL, and the modern-at-the-time 90s SBS guernsey was definitely a part of that identity crisis that was only really solved when we re-merged.

The question is: Could we have avoided a lot of that identity crisis by retaining a prison bars design despite the colour change? I argue yes.

We absolutely could not do teal prison bars now. The prison bars are sacred and untouchable and will be for the foreseeable future. However given what was turned out in the most 90s event of 1996, the guernsey and logo reveal, would black and teal prison bars have been as poorly received in 1997?

I think Port Adelaide people would have accepted them in 1997. We accepted the SBS guernsey ffs. We clearly had bigger fish to fry at that point.

If we'd entered the AFL in black and teal prison bars, we'd still be wearing them now, I have no doubt about that. We'd never have actively switched away from a PB design.

That looks shit but. I'm sure it would have been tinkered with. The white bars with with the black top/teal bottom or vice versa are both better.

Do like the fat stripe and those socks.

3. In no mans land that looks shit but Warren Tredrea socks OMG!

While we're on the topic of foot gloves, b&w hooped socks with our alternate kit (ie when we wear the home guerns w/ white shorts against GC, Hawthorn & NM) would look insane.

From what I've been told, I think we'll all be happy on a regular basis.

Maybe I'm hopelessly deluded but I've had this theory for a number of years now that there is a covert operation underway to reinstate the prison bars via a stealthy creep back.

First step was the number panel as a 'Showdown guernsey'.

Second step was putting the number panel on our home guernsey.

Third step must be wearing the prison bars as a 'Showdown guernsey'.

Fourth step is the money shot.

Tbh mate the prospect of only wearing them in showdowns is a massive disappointment to me and goes against the Oz domination of the PBs I'd be all for

I too dislike the concept of PB showdown specials.

The PB is a classic traditional guernsey and so far in the AFL we've worn it against proper football clubs, where it belongs.

The PB vs Crows gives them too much credit for anything and cements the Port vs South Australia narrative. It's a real thing, but I'd prefer to not see us lower ourselves by acknowledging it in such a way. I'm reminded of our classy reply to their attempt of the state guernsey.

It should never ever be a showdown guernsey. It can be all, nothing, a blue moon, but never that.

Provided we don't get a "Port Power Teal Tide!" President weaned on Est 1996 malarkey umpteen years into the future, being able to wear it more often than not will be a thing at some stage.

Whether the final caveat is that we don't wear it in Victoria/against Collingwood home or away, I don't particularly mind, but that we didn't strike while the iron was hot after the 2014 EF will go down as one of the great 'WTF were we thinking?!' mysteries of our post-1996 existence.

And shit there have been a few.

The thought of it being a Showdown only jumper irks me though. It's saying that this strip is confined to South Australia because. And in reality it should just be our jumper.

I kinda feel the same way too but if it's used as the thin edge of the wedge as TeeKray suggested then I'll take it.

Wearing it regularly is the key tactic here. Once it’s seen more often, and showdowns rate well in Melbourne, the barriers against us wearing it become less rigid.

We’ve come a long way baby, don’t lose patience now.
